Book Friends in Need

Download or read book Friends in Need written by Andrew Bennett and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1997 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who contributes to alliances and why? Is a state's aggregate relative capabilities the major factor in determining participation? How do perceived threats, dependence on other alliance members, domestic politics, and learned experience from analogous situations matter? Alliances will be looser and more ad hoc in the post-Cold War international system than they were between 1947 and 1991. Andrew Bennett, Joseph Lepgold, and Danny Unger recognize this situation and the key policy issues it raises with regard to multilateral conflict management. In Friends in Need, the assembled authors study alliances in a more general sense, using the coalition that was established to deal with the Gulf War as their example. Looking individually at all of the countries that took part in the coalition, the authors provide a richly detailed study of alliances and the way they work now.

Book Burden Sharing in the Persian Gulf

Download or read book Burden Sharing in the Persian Gulf written by Katsuaki L. Terasawa and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States was the dominant member of the coalition formed to counter Iraq's annexation of Kuwait. This led to U.S. concerns that countries benefiting from the coalition were contributing less than their fair share. This paper compares contributions and benefits for the major coalition participants in Operation Desert Storm. The benefits include national sovereignty and oil supply security. The contributions include defense resources and financial and in-kind payments to the U.S. and other countries. The analysis concludes that national sovereignty was the more significant of the two benefits and that the oil supply security benefit may be larger for the U.S. than for countries completely dependent on imported oil (i.e., Japan and Germany). Thus, the Gulf countries may have under contributed to the coalition. Japan and Germany may have over contributed, relative to these benefits, though they may have received other benefits not measured here. Burden Sharing, Operation Desert Storm, Alliances.

Book US Kuwaiti Relations 1961 1992

Download or read book US Kuwaiti Relations 1961 1992 written by Chookiat Panaspornprasit and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After being granted full independence in 1961, Kuwait began its tumultuous relationship with the US. This book sets out to investigate this alliance within the frameworks of a ‘small state’ and ‘influence’, and in particular under the US presidents Carter, Reagan, and Bush. The political, diplomatic and military aspects are examined which have both stalled and enhanced the bilateral relationship at different times and events. The relationship between the two countries has not always been a straightforward one. Kuwait, overshadowed by its bigger neighbour Saudi Arabia, was regarded as a derivative interest by the US and its role within the region more often than not underestimated. Shedding new light on this key political alliance, the book details how this uneasy relationship evolved while Kuwait maintained its independent foreign policy, which contradicted US national interest. Illuminating and informative, it is essential reading for anyone with an interest in Middle East politics and international relations.
