Book excerpt: The Attorney General commissioned this review of community legal centre services in New South Wales to ensure that legal assistance is directed to people most in need and to help inform the Government's approach to allocating funding. The review examined a range of issues, including the type, scope, and geographical spread of community legal centres in the state and what funding levels are required. Currently, state funding is supplemented by Commonwealth grants, which are obliged to prioritise family law and family violence services. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the review. Sections include: overview of the legal assistance sector, funding arrangements, benefits of legal assistance services for individuals and government, the legal needs of disadvantaged groups and the services they require, priority client groups, the geographical location of disadvantaged groups, location of generalist and specialist community legal centres, efficiency and duplication in the legal assistance sector, significant service gaps, funding levels needed to deliver required services, addressing unmet legal need, addressing the service gap for Aboriginal clients, and a proposed allocation methodology.
