Book Revelation of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Revelation of Jesus Christ written by Margaret Barker and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-11-02 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and transforming approach to the Book of Revelation. Margaret Barker bases her study on a fresh reading of the primary sources. As an Old Testament scholar, she can read Revelation as Hebrew prophecy - ancient temple oracles which inspired Jesus and his own prophecies, and influenced the whole Jerusalem Church. Jerusalem was waiting for their Great High Priest to return and complete the Atonement at the end of the Tenth Jubilee. This expectation fuelled the revolt against Rome. Josephus, who deserted to Rome, was the false prophet. John, who escaped to Patmos, compiled Revelation as a record of the first generation. In the future, he taught, the Lord would return to his people in the Eucharist. This work illuminates the formative years of Christianity, in the social, religious and political situation of mid-first-century Palestine, in a quite remarkable way. It will have profound implications for the understanding of Christian origins and the development of Christian liturgy.

Book A Testimony of Jesus Christ Volume 2

Download or read book A Testimony of Jesus Christ Volume 2 written by Anthony Charles Garland and published by SpiritAndTruth.org. This book was released on 2007 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Commentary on the Book of Revelation - Volume 2 The author presents a detailed study of the Book of Revelation emphasizing prophetic themes from the rest of the Bible which find their fulfillment in Revelation. To understand this controversial book, the author explores the many connections between the visions seen by the Apostle John and previous prophetic revelation given to Old Testament prophets such as Daniel, Ezekiel, and others. It is the author's conviction that an understanding of related passages elsewhere in the Bible is the most important key to unlocking the bewildering variety of interpretations which often accompany the study of the last book of the Bible. The commentary can be used in conjunction with a free companion internet course providing an additional 70 hours of audio instruction linked to almost 1,000 slides.

Book A Revelation of Jesus Christ

Download or read book A Revelation of Jesus Christ written by J.B. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-05-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction by Merrill C. Tenney: This commentary is an attempt to make plain the meaning of Revelation. With commendable reserve, Dr. Smith has restricted himself largely to interpretation by other passages of Scripture which are related to Revelation by actual quotation or by striking parallelism. His painstaking studies of vocabulary and of related ideas make the book valuable to the earnest student of the Bible. Dr. Smith is a futurist and a premillenarian, holding that all of the Book of Revelation beginning with the fourth chapter relates to the future period of judgment known as 'the great tribulation,' which will be followed by the personal return of Christ and by the establishment of His kingdom. In this regard he is in a long line of renowned commentators, including Seiss, Gaebelein, Ottman, and others. The distinguishing feature of this commentary is its use of Biblical statistics and comparisons. The uses of important terms in the Revelation are cataloged, and their interpretation is derived from their context. The appendices contain some extensive studies of individual topics, correlating information not easily obtainable elsewhere. Dr. Smith follows a literal interpretation except where avowed symbolism demands a different procedure. He has sought to make his exposition consistent in method and in results. His use of Greek is apt, and shows a careful investigation of the underlying vocabulary of the Greek text. This commentary will probably be the mainstay of premillennial exposition for some years to come.

Book The Christ of the Apocalypse Contemplating the Faces of Jesus in the Book of Revelation

Download or read book The Christ of the Apocalypse Contemplating the Faces of Jesus in the Book of Revelation written by Msgr. A. Robert Nusca and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That the Apocalypse of John is a “Revelation of Jesus Christ” (Rev 1:1) is a fact too often overlooked by interpreters of this last book of the Bible. As Msgr. A. Robert Nusca’s The Christ of the Apocalypse: Contemplating the Faces of Jesus in the Book of Revelation proposes, beyond predictions of earthquakes and falling stars, St. John articulates from start to finish a multifaceted and compelling portrait of Jesus Christ. Nusca offers an exegetical reading of selected verses of the Book of Revelation, incorporating rich spiritual and pastoral reflections. The Christ of the Apocalypse above all affirms that St. John’s God- and Christ-centered, symbolic universe offers our contemporary world a spiritual place to stand amid the shifting sands of postmodernity. As Cardinal Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, writes in his Foreword, “Now, as in the first century, Christians face martyrdom, and those who are not called to die for Christ are called to live for Christ in a world which in many ways rejects the Gospel. More than ever, we need the apocalyptic vision, to have our own vision of reality clarified, and to be strengthened in our evangelical witness.”

Book How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian

Download or read book How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian written by John Dominic Crossan and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed Bible scholar and author of The Historical Jesus and God & Empire—“the greatest New Testament scholar of our generation” (John Shelby Spong) —grapples with Scripture’s two conflicting visions of Jesus and God, one of a loving God, and one of a vengeful God, and explains how Christians can better understand these passages in a way that enriches their faith. Many portions of the New Testament, introduce a compassionate Jesus who turns the other cheek, loves his enemies, and shows grace to all. But the Jesus we find in Revelation and some portions of the Gospels leads an army of angels bent on earthly destruction. Which is the true revelation of the Messiah—and how can both be in the same Bible? How to Read the Bible and Still be a Christian explores this question and offers guidance for the faithful conflicted over which version of the Lord to worship. John Dominic Crossan reconciles these contrasting views, revealing how different writers of the books of the Bible not only possessed different visions of God but also different purposes for writing. Often these books are explicitly competing against another, opposing vision of God from the Bible itself. Crossan explains how to navigate this debate and offers what he believes is the best central thread to what the Bible is all about. He challenges Christians to fully participate in this dialogue, thereby shaping their faith by reading deeply, reflectively, and in community with others who share their uncertainty. Only then, he advises, will Christians be able to read and understand the Bible without losing their faith.

Book Revelations

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elaine Pagels
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2012-03-06
  • ISBN : 110157707X
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Revelations written by Elaine Pagels and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

  • ISBN : 197362561X
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Revelations written by Carol Bass and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-06-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelations is a result of years of disciplined study of Gods Word, a result of intimacy with Jesus, a result of intimate time in the Word from God, the Word in Carol and her in the Word. This devotion is a culmination of years of growth from private time spent daily in Gods presence allowing Jesus, the Word made flesh, to rule over the evil nature within, thus allowing the Word of God to be King and Lord. His work began in 1989 as Carol poured her heart out, quietly journaling and giving expression to her feelings, while being alone with the Word. With pen in hand and blank paper waiting, she gained revelation about evils fleshly nature within, the principalities, powers, and rulers without, and about Jesus, the Word, Who is the Revealer of all Truth. From the feelings in her heart, to the thoughts in her mind, to where the pen met the paper, she gained discernment. By expressing her heart in light of the Word of Truth, with the Word of Truth filtering her thoughts and prayers, she discerned her way, aligned her heart and mind with Truth, lived life according to the Truth, and then learned how to pray a right prayer according to the Truth.

Download or read book Vision of Jesus written by R. T. Kendall and published by Christian Focus. This book was released on 2001-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image that we have of Jesus is one which affects the way we act as Christians and the way we take the gospel to the world. That image has sometimes beenreflected badly because we do not have a fully rounded image of the Jesus we love and worship. Indeed some modern concepts of Jesus in the Church would be difficult to worship. In revelation Chapter 1 Jesus appears in a vision given to the apostle John - it is an awesome, majestic vision. The Bible, perhaps intentionally, doesn't give us much information about what Jesus looked like in human form. Here, God gives us an image that transcends the incarnation - an image of Jesus that we can really focus on. In C.S. Lewis' 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', Lucy asks whether Aslan is safe - "course he isn't safe. But he's good...". That exchange gives us some of the flavour of this vision of Jesus. As we consider his character we are helped to understand him as 'Lord'.
