Book Wisdom s Root Revealed

Download or read book Wisdom s Root Revealed written by Greg Schmidt Goering and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph interprets the theme of election in the book of Sirach. Previous scholarship has often understood Ben Sira s worldview to be dualistic, and has approached the sage's correlation of Wisdom and Torah as either a nationalization of Wisdom or a universalization of Torah. By probing Ben Sira s ideas about election, this book suggests that Ben Sira does not collapse the traditional sapiential dichotomy wisdom/folly into a dualistic worldview, and that his understanding of the relation between Wisdom and Torah proves to be far more subtle than previous interpretations have allowed. The study demonstrates that the concept of election enables a profitable discussion of the relation of Wisdom and Torah in the thought of this pivotal Second Temple sage.

Book excerpt: A collection of twenty-one essays clustered around the theme of apocalyptic—revelations of hitherto undisclosed divine mysteries to human seers, either directly or through the mediation of an interpreting angel. Preliminary essays on the Book of Job, Messianism, and apocalyptic ethics are followed by five studies centred upon Jewish apocalypses composed around the turn of the era, two anonymous, three pseudonymous, and four essays on New Testament writers, two on Paul, one on Mark, and one on John. A reflection upon an early Islamic convert from Judaism, emphasizing the ‘Abrahamic-lexicon’ common to all three religions of the book, is succeeded by essays on two medieval Christian visionaries, Joachim of Fiore and Francis of Assisi. After a further essay on a little known Syriac apocalyptic text the volume concludes with studies of four different aspects of the Book of Revelation itself.

Download or read book Behind the Veil written by Cliff Hulling and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly before Jesus died on the cross, the Judean governor Pilate mocked the concept of finding an exclusive set of facts that would be applicable to all mankind. He did so with the simple yet provocative and sarcastic statement, "what is truth?" (John 18:38) This taunt has continued down through the ages. In modern times, absolute truth is a touchy subject in our current climate of moral relativism. But there is no getting around it: the bible claims that such truth exists. Jesus was straightforward with Pilate, telling him, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice" (John 18:37). Instead of "what is truth?", Pilate's question should have been "what if it's true?" God welcomes open-minded questions. In fact, honest questions are part of human nature and God's Word holds up to scrutiny. Honest would be the key word here, because many people come to the bible with incorrect and immovable preconceived notions. Others will not even make time to check out the truth of Christianity. Are you an honest seeker? Would you like to open-mindedly examine the scandalous yet wonderful claims found in the Bible? If so, then you are ready to peer behind the veil and into the revealed wisdom of God.

Book excerpt: This 10-week study of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon mines the Wisdom Literature not only for wise principles for living, but also for the wise person these books point to through their drama, poetry, proverb, and song. In her accessible and authentic style, Nancy Guthrie focuses on seeing Jesus in the Old Testament instead of emphasizing works-based moralism. She presents clear commentary and contemporary application of gospel truths, speaking directly to issues such as repentance, submission, happiness, and sexuality. Each weekly lesson includes questions for personal study, a contemporary teaching chapter that emphasizes how the passage fits into the bigger story of redemptive history, a brief section on how the passage uniquely points to what is yet to come at the consummation of Christ's kingdom, and a leader's guide for group discussion.

  • ISBN : 3110211130

Download or read book Revealing the Mysterion written by Benjamin Gladd and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-12-19 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars largely agree that the NT term “mysterion” is a terminus technicus, originating from Daniel. This project traces the word in the Dead Sea Scrolls and other sectors of Judaism. Like Daniel, the term consistently retains eschatological connotations. The monograph then examines how mystery functions within 1 Corinthians and seeks to explain why the term is often employed. The apocalyptic term concerns the Messiah reigning in the midst of defeat, eschatological revelations and tongues, charismatic exegesis, and the transformation of believers into the image of the last Adam.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Wisdom and the Bible

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Wisdom and the Bible written by Will Kynes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of leading scholars presents reflections on both wisdom as a general concept throughout history and cultures, as well as the contested nature of the category of Wisdom Literature. The first half of the collection explores wisdom more generally with essays on its relationship to skill, epistemology, virtue, theology, and order. Wisdom is examined in a number of different contexts, such as historically in the Hebrew Bible and its related cultures, in Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as in Patristic and Rabbinic interpretation. Additionally, wisdom is examined in its continuing relevance in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian thought, as well as from feminist, environmental, and other contextual perspectives. The second half of the volume considers "Wisdom Literature" as a category. Scholars address its relation to the Solomonic Collection, its social setting, literary genres, chronological development, and theology. Wisdom Literature's relation to other biblical literature (law, history, prophecy, apocalyptic, and the broad question of "Wisdom influence") is then discussed before separate chapters on the texts commonly associated with the category. Contributors take a variety of approaches to the current debates surrounding the viability and value of Wisdom Literature as a category and its proper relationship to the concept of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. Though the organization of the volume highlights the independence of wisdom as concept from "Wisdom Literature" as a category, seeking to counter the lack of attention given to this question in the traditional approach, the inclusion of both topics together in the same volume reflects their continued interconnection. As such, this handbook both represents the current state of Wisdom scholarship and sets the stage for future developments.
