Book Fires Within

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ray Thompson
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2010-09-14
  • ISBN : 1453566155
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Fires Within written by Ray Thompson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Fires Within” seeks to explore contemporary life issues, especially the often conflicting ‘inner fires’ of sexuality and spirituality - conflicting not just with each other, but also with traditional religious and social attitudes and myths. The novel begins where it ends - but then goes back to earlier years to trace the circumstances and rapidly changing community attitudes that have combined to bring the individuals in this story to this point in their lives. Peter is the central character - a minister/pastor, who struggles with these issues within the conservative and often defensive ethos of the traditional Australian church - and particularly in relation to unresolved grief in his own life. Len is a doctor, facing similar issues within secular society. Jay is a Chinese woman, who has to work through these same conflicts - firstly, growing up as the daughter of a missionary doctor in what then became Communist China, and later as a reluctant masseuse/sex worker in Australia. Rather than trying to provide simplistic or moralistic answers to these inner conflicts, these characters - individually, and later, through their interaction with one another - grapple with their search for personal integrity. This frequently means having to stand out against peer group opinion, and challenge some of the traditions and myths that often limit their enjoyment of ‘the fullness of life’. While all characters in the novel are fictitious, the unfolding events deliberately reflect the kind of situations and raw emotions that are common in many people's lives. In a real world that is far from perfect, the choices that they have to make are not simply between 'good' and 'bad' - but reflect the multi-faceted dilemas that often confront real people. The author attemps to deal with these issues in a non-judgemental way, hopefully opening the door for readers, grappling with similar issues, to explore new possibilities in their own lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SNEAK PEAK AT THE FIRST NINE CHAPTERS OF PARADISE VALLEY BY NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR C.J. BOX She almost caught him once. Now, he’s back. For three years, Investigator Cassie Dewell has been on a hunt for a serial killer known as the Lizard King whose hunting grounds are the highways and truck stops where runaways and prostitutes are most likely to vanish. Cassie almost caught him...once. Working for the Bakken County, North Dakota sheriff's department, Cassie has set what she believes is the perfect trap and she has lured him and his truck to a depot. But the plan goes horribly wrong, and the blame falls on Cassie. Disgraced, she loses her job and investigation into her role is put into motion. At the same time, Kyle Westergaard, a troubled kid whom Cassie has taken under her wing, has disappeared after telling people that he’s going off on a long-planned adventure. Kyle's grandmother begs Cassie to find him and, with nothing else to do, Cassie agrees—all the while hunting the truck driver. Now Cassie is a lone wolf. And in the same way that two streams converge into a river, Kyle's disappearance may have a more sinister meaning than anyone realizes. With no allies, no support, and only her own wits to rely on, Cassie must take down a killer who is as ruthless as he is cunning. But can she do it alone, without losing her own humanity or her own life?
