Book Researching International Migration

Download or read book Researching International Migration written by K. C. Zachariah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration and workers’ remittances have, of late, become a significant economic and social phenomena affecting the fortunes of millions of families in the developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Yet, the measurements and methods of analysis of their impact on the individuals, families, economy, and society have not received the attention they deserve. A first-of-its-kind study of international migration, based on large-scale surveys across a span of 15 years of fieldwork, this book: includes methods of conducting field surveys, estimating migration, and analysing migration trends, remittances, selectivity, and differentials; assesses other demographic, socio-economic phenomenon, such as education, employment and women’s status; provides a methodology to evaluate remittances and their influence on the economy; and examines social costs of migration on those left behind — parents, wives and children — a neglected area in the field of migration. This handbook will be invaluable to scholars and students of migration studies, demography, development studies and sociology as well as policy-makers, administrators, academics, and non-governmental organisations in the field.

At present, there are roughly over 1.3 million return emigrants in the state. Migration of workers from Kerala to the gulf countries has received the attractions among the researchers. But only a few studies existed in literature on return migration in Kerala. The important issues connected with return migration, such as the causes of return, socio-economic background of the returnees, the current activity status of the returnees, occupational mobility of the return migrants and the problems faced by them are the only area where a few studies are available. Several recent researches have dealt with the relationship between migration and entrepreneurship, analyzing the occupational choice of returnees and providing evidence of their high propensity to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Book Migration and Pandemics

Download or read book Migration and Pandemics written by Anna Triandafyllidou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the socio-political context of the COVID-19 crisis and questions the management of the pandemic emergency with special reference to how this affected the governance of migration and asylum. The book offers critical insights on the impact of the pandemic on migrant workers in different world regions including North America, Europe and Asia. The book addresses several categories of migrants including medical staff, farm labourers, construction workers, care and domestic workers and international students. It looks at border closures for non-citizens, disruption for temporary migrants as well as at special arrangements made for essential (migrant) workers such as doctors or nurses as well as farmworkers, ‘shipped’ to destination with special flights to make sure emergency wards are staffed, and harvests are picked up and the food processing chain continues to function. The book illustrates how the pandemic forces us to rethink notions like membership, citizenship, belonging, but also solidarity, human rights, community, essential services or ‘essential’ workers alongside an intersectional perspective including ethnicity, gender and race.

The book concludes that whatever the skills acquired by the migrants from the migration phase, are not using by the migrants and earnings are not using in a productive manner. Book Migration and Development

Download or read book Migration and Development written by Kunniparampil Curien Zachariah and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demography is destiny for most populations. At this juncture of its demographic transition, it is, however, migration that is destiny for the Kerala population According to the first Kerala Migration Study (1999), migration had provided the single most dynamic factor in the otherwise dismal economic scenario of Kerala in the last quarter of the twentieth century. This Book documents Kerala's deepening socio-economic nexus with the Gulf countries through emigration based on the second Kerala Migration Survey conducted in 2004, funded the South Asian Network of Economic Institutes (SANE) and the special grant from the Centre for Development Studies, Kerala. It provides information on the size, trend, geographical distribution, socio-economic composition of migrants, and remittances sent home by migrants.// Analysis based on this new study indicates that migration is continuing to provide the most dynamic factor in the economic growth of Kerala State in the new century. The new century is likely to see migration encompassing a wider section of the Kerala population and the migration-impact spreading to newer sectors of the Kerala economy. Migrants of the 21st century would be structurally different from those of the 20th century. They would be better qualified and would be occupying higher positions in the job market abroad. The economic and political climate in the State seems to be becoming more receptive to profitable investments in developmental projects on a much larger scale in the coming decades. Emigration is likely to bring in, besides the much-needed capital, entrepreneurship and business leadership for Kerala's development. Migration is poised to determine more closely Kerala's destiny in the socio-economic development in the coming decades.

Book Changing Roles and Coping Strategies of Gulf Returnee Muslim Women Migrants in Kerala

Download or read book Changing Roles and Coping Strategies of Gulf Returnee Muslim Women Migrants in Kerala written by Shajila Beevi. S, 1st and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last three decades migration from Kerala to the Middle East has taken place in a significant scale. According to the latest information one out of every six households working in Middle East, and it is evident that the incidence of migration is the highest among the Muslims. In recent years, the employment opportunities in Middle East have been on a decline. Further demand has shifted from unskilled to professional labour force. Because of this in labour demand and the increase in supply of labourers from other countries, there has been large-scale return migration from Middle East. Though the migration of women to the Gulf countries has been of smaller magnitude, compared to men, they still constitute a sizeable number. Though many of them has gone to the Middle East for employment in skilled and unskilled jobs, these women migrants have been returning to the state after some years stay in Gulf compared to men the women migrants and returnees have to face much more severe problems as women is the most exploited creature in the world. They have to face much more severe problems arising out of the changing socio-economic and family environment in which they have to struggle for their day-today life. Though there have been a number of studies on return migrants, no systematic attempt has been made so far to the changing roles of these migrant and returnee women migrants and the coping strategies they have adopted to survive these situations. The present study is an attempt in this direction. This study will be carried out specifically in the context of Muslim women who are socially and educationally backward compared to other communities. Because of this backwardness gulf migrant and returned Muslim women have to face more problems than other community migrants and returnees.

Book India Migration Report 2012

Download or read book India Migration Report 2012 written by S. Irudaya Rajan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of articles dealing with various dimensions of the Global Financial Crisis and its economic and social impact in terms of governance, emigration, remittances, return migration and re-integration. The crisis, which had its origin in the United States in 2008, spread its economic effects on developed as well as developing countries. Some of these countries were able to recover in the short run while some are in the process of recovery, with continuous efforts by both national governments and international agencies. In this backdrop, is there any impact on the outflow of emigrants from the countries of origin and inflow of remittances to the countries of destination? The third volume in the annual series ‘India Migration Report’ answers the question through rigorous quantitative and qualitative analyses and fieldwork both in the Gulf region and South Asia, and concludes that both emigration and remittances are more resilient than expected. This report: contains findings based on an extensive survey conducted in Kerala; has additional evaluations based on other surveys and case studies conducted in different parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka to reflect on the consequences of the global crisis on the countries of origin, as well as a quick assessment and site visits to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Malaysia; includes essays that examine the linkages between emigration and remittances based on international data from the World Bank, the International Labour Organization, the International Organization of Migration, the United Nations and other organizations that closely deal with international migration. It will be of interest to students and scholars of migration studies, sociology, law, economics, gender studies, diaspora studies, international relations and demography, apart from non-governmental organizations, policy-makers and government institutions working in the field of migration.
