A la inquietud difusa que provoca el cambio climático hay que sumar la de sus manifestaciones más evidentes, con sequías cada vez más graves en diversos lugares y distantes países o mayores y más devastadores fenómenos meteorológicos, como huracanes o inundaciones. Todos estos fenómenos influyen en la vida de los seres humanos y afectan directamente a su calidad de vida y bienestar e inciden en el disfrute efectivo de sus derechos fundamentales. En este contexto, investigadores de varias universidades españolas y brasileñas, desde su propio contexto geográfico, cultural y académico, abordan, ya sea desde su relación con los derechos humanos, ya sea desde la adopción de políticas públicas que lo favorezcan, la necesaria protección medioambiental y la búsqueda de un desarrollo económico sostenible. Se abordan, por tanto, cuestiones relativas a la relación entre medioambiente y derechos fundamentales, pero también aquellas que tienen que ver con el desarrollo rural, o las políticas económica, energética o urbanística y el desarrollo sostenible. La mayoría de los trabajos reunidos en este libro fueron presentados en Congresso Internacional Os Desafios da Sustentabilidade e dos Direitos Humanos no Seculo XXI celebrado en la Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul – UNISC y en el VII Simpósio de Estudos Jurídicos realizado en la Universidade Regional Integrada do Alto Uruguai e das Missões –URI, en los meses de mayo y junio de 2014.
