Book Freedom and Constraint

Download or read book Freedom and Constraint written by Fred Coalter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989. In the climate of long-term unemployment, early retirement, and technology that is seen to threaten jobs, 'leisure’ has been presented as the solution to a multitude of social problems. The essays in this collection represent the most important arguments on the problems, myths, and misunderstandings of leisure. Arguing from a range of positions, some sceptical, others more idealistic, they look at the complexities of this field and the social and political problems that surround it. No single argument dominates. What emerges is a live-wire debate on class and gender, employment and economic status, age and education, which brings the discussion of leisure controversially up to date. The book, based on papers presented to conferences of the Leisure Studies Association, divides into sections on leisure and social change, the relationship between leisure and social structures, and the tension between leisure and employment. It takes a critical look at leisure in Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the USA, and at the paradoxes that will determine its future. Whilst refusing to see leisure as a synonym for social progress and liberalization, it argues that the quality of leisure reflects the quality of society itself.

Book Age and Structural Lag

Download or read book Age and Structural Lag written by Matilda White Riley and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1994-09-02 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In society at large, lives have been drastically altered over this century--as a consequence of increased longevity, advances in science and education, the gender revolution, improvements in public health, and other historical trends and events--but numerous inflexible social structures, roles, and norms have lagged behind. There is a mismatch or imbalance between the transformation of the aging process from birth to death and the role opportunities or places in the social structure that could foster and reward people at the various stages of their lives. While the twentieth century has experienced a revolution in human development and aging, there has been no comparable revolution in the role structures of society to keep pace with the changes in the ways people grow up and grow old. The lag involves not only institutional and organizational arrangements, but also the many aspects of culture that, in addition to being internalized by people, are built into role expectations and societal mores and laws. For the future, then, structural changes will be needed if people are to find opportunities to spread leisure and work, as well as education, more evenly over the life course, and to make room for family affairs." --from Age and Structural Lag

Book Work and Retirement

Download or read book Work and Retirement written by Stanley Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s world recession and widespread unemployment had accentuated an existing trend – more people retiring from work early and living longer after doing so. Some were adequately prepared for a life of well-earned ‘leisure’ in retirement, but too many were not. The policies of employers, unions and governments on retirement needed to be challenged in societies where work opportunities were collapsing but where leisure activities and values were not yet strong enough to take their place. Originally published in 1982, Dr Parker, a sociologist, provides a careful and critical examination of what we knew about retirement and discusses possible alternative answers to the various problems involved at the time. The history of retirement is first considered, followed by a conceptual analysis of types of retirement. There are chapters on preparation for retirement, the capacity of older people to work, and on the varying experiences of retirement. Separate consideration is given to the question of work after retirement age and whether retirement is actually experienced as leisure. The concluding chapter examines various policy alternatives for dealing with the problems raised earlier in the book. Work and Retirement was intended for students of industrial sociology and industrial psychology, for personnel and human resource professionals, for trade unionists and for all those who had an interest in understanding the developments in the field of retirement and the older working population. Now it can be read in its historical context.

Book Time work and leisure

  • Author : Hugh Cunningham
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press

  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Time work and leisure written by Hugh Cunningham and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the relationship between work and leisure, from the ‘leisure preference’ of male workers in the eighteenth century, through the increase in working hours in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, to their progressive decline from 1830 to 1970. It examines how trade union action was critical in achieving the decline; how class structured the experience of leisure; how male identity was shaped by both work and leisure; how, in a society that placed high value on work, a ‘leisured class’ was nevertheless at the apex of political and social power – until it became thought of as ‘the idle rich’. Coinciding with the decline in working hours, two further tranches of time were marked out as properly without work: childhood and retirement. Accessible, wide-ranging and occasionally polemical, this book provides the first history of how we have imagined and used time.

Book Leisure and the Future

Download or read book Leisure and the Future written by A. J. Veal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. In the context of the debate about the changing structure of modem economies, the growth of leisure, and the place of work and leisure in society, this book reviews the ‘state of the art’ of leisure forecasting and the study of leisure futures. It traces man's concern with future leisure from classical and utopian writings to science fiction and ‘futurology’. Contemporary issues such as attitudes towards work and leisure, the ‘work ethic’, education for leisure and measures to share scarce jobs and increase leisure time are discussed in an objective and comprehensive manner. The more technical approaches to leisure forecasting are presented in an accessible and readable form. This book will be of value to students of leisure studies, recreation studies and public policy, to policy makers and planners working in the field, and to all those who have an interest in understanding what is happening to leisure and work in our society.

Book HyperReality

  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book HyperReality written by Nobuyoshi Terashima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'HyperReality is a technological capability like nanotechnology, human cloning and artificial intelligence. Like them, it does not as yet exist in the sense of being clearly demonstrable and publicly available. Like them, it is maturing in laboratories where the question "if" has been replaced by the question "when?" and like them, the implications of its appearance as a basic infrastructure technology are profound and merit careful consideration.' - Nobuyoshi Terashima What comes after the Internet? Imagine a world where it is difficult to tell if the person standing next to you is real or a virtual reality, and whether they have human intelligence or artificial intelligence; a world where people can appear to be anything they want to be. HyperReality makes this possible. HyperReality offers a window into the world of the future, an interface between the natural and artificial. Nobuyoshi Terashima led the team that developed the prototype for HyperReality at Japan's ATT laboratories. John Tiffin studied they way HyperReality would create a new communications paradigm. Together with a stellar list of contributors from around the globe who are engaged in researching different aspects of HyperReality, they offer the first account of this extraordinary technology and its implications. This fascinating book explores the defining features of HyperReality: what it is, how it works and how it could become to the information society what mass media was to the industrial society. It describes ongoing research into areas such as the design of virtual worlds and virtual humans, and the role of intelligent agents. It looks at applications and ways in which HyperReality may impact on fields such as translation, medicine, education, entertainment and leisure. What are its implications for lifestyles and work, for women and the elderly: Will we grow to prefer the virtual worlds we create to the physical world we adapt to? HyperReality at the beginning of the third millennium is like steam power at the beginning of the nineteenth century and radio at the start of the twentieth century, an idea that has been shown to work but has yet to be applied. This book is for anyone concerned about the future and the effects of technology on our lives.

Book Leisure and Life style

Download or read book Leisure and Life style written by Anna Olszewska and published by Sage Publications (CA). This book was released on 1989 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prolonged period of economic expansion after the second world war, and more recent developments such as the impact of information technology, led to predictions of the imminent arrival of a new leisure society. The combination of rising wealth with free time created by technological advance was expected to heighten existing trends towards the dissemination of leisure and consumption throughout social classes and groups. In this international comparative analysis of contemporary leisure and lifestyles, a distinguished team of contributors show that the actual evolution of patterns of work and leisure is more complex. The impact of economic recession in the early 1980s, and of continued crisis in many parts of the world, has accentuated differences in consumption and leisure within and between nations. Some groups have emerged with enforced free time through unemployment, underemployment or retirement; others with leisure time limited through pressures of work but with increased capacity for conspicuous consumption. In analysing the amount and use of free time in society the authors shed light not only on leisure but also on the ways different societies are being reshaped by current economic pressures. This book will be of interest to all scholars interested in the growing fields of leisure studies, cultural studies, and the sociology of consumption.
