Download or read book Cooked written by Carol Karels and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1971, Look magazine featured an article entitled "Chicago's Cook County Hospital: A Terrible Place." The article provided an in-depth look at the largest public hospital in the country, one located on Chicago's dangerous gang-controlled and drug-infested West Side. Months later, the author, then a nave suburban teen, and one hundred other nursing students, began their training there, despite newspaper articles that warned that the hospital might close any day. At 'the County,' where nurse duties included swatting flies in the OR and delousing patients, both nurses and doctors were expected to provide care under the most desperate of circumstances. Cooked provides an inside look at the 2,000-bed ghetto hospital, often referred to as a "19th-century sick house," that provided health care to millions of Chicago's poor.
Download or read book Ruff s War written by K. Sue Roper and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years in the Navy had made Cheryl Ruff an independent, resilient, strong woman —and a master at providing patient care while serving at various Navy hospitals around the world. But nothing prepared her mind, body, soul, and spirit for what she experienced on the frontlines of the Iraq war as a member of the Bravo Surgical Company. Known as the "devil docs," they followed directly behind the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force as they entered Iraq at the onset of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003. Right along with the Marines, Commander Ruff, the only female nurse anesthetist at the front, and the rest of her surgical team learned to endure the brutal conditions of the desert while regularly confronting questions of life and death. Working in temperatures well over 100 degrees in full MOP gear, Ruff and her team set up mobile hospital tents in the sand wherever needed. As Black Hawk helicopters brought in steady streams of the wounded, they found it impossible to maintain standard sterilization procedures, and clean up often amounted to just shovelling the blood-soaked sand out of the tent. During surgery they often wore lighted helmets so they could continue operating if the generator failed and donned gas masks when warnings were issued. These horrific conditions, coupled with the gruesome images of shredded bodies and the cries of wounded children, became Ruff's world. This is her story of the war, up close and personal. It is a story of sacrifice, survival, and courage, movingly written by a woman unconditionally dedicated to the life-saving mission of the United States Navy Nurse Corps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing a journal can sometimes be daunting because you seem to have another thing on you're to do list, but after doing it for sometime it becomes a habit. Use it to record all of your blessings and what you are grateful for in your life whether large or small. For your eyes only. No one else has to see your journal. If you think you have nothing to be grateful for try not breathing, eating, sleeping, seeing, hearing, walking, talking, family, health etc. It is best to write in your journal every day, if you wait till the end of the week you may forget some of the many blessings you may have received. Write positive things in your journal and write preferably everyday if you leave it till the end of the week you are likely to forget many of the blessings you have received. This journal consists of quotes, prompts and images, you can also write any inspirational quotes that may interest you, paste personal notes, vacation tickets and other things that you may feel grateful about. You can also write down your thoughts and feelings about a situation you cannot solve. Writing in your journal help to focus on things that really matter to you and help you to be more aware of yourself.

Download or read book The Little Book of Gratitude written by Dr Robert A Emmons PhD and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gratitude is, first and foremost, a way of seeing that alters our gaze. Gratitude is the simple, scientifically proven way to increase happiness and encourage greater joy, love, peace, and optimism into our lives. It's not just good medicine though, a nice sentiment, a warm fuzzy feeling, or a strategy or tactic for being happier or healthier. It is also the truest approach to life. We did not create or fashion ourselves, and we did not get to where we are in life by ourselves. Living gratefully begins with affirming the good and recognizing its sources. It is the understanding that life owes you nothing and all the good you have is a gift, accompanied by an awareness that nothing can be taken for granted. Featuring beautiful illustrations and simple exercises, this is the perfect little book to help you: - Practice gratitude - Improve your health and wellbeing - Enhance your relationships - Encourage healthy sleep - Heighten feelings of connectedness
