Book From Craft to Profession

Download or read book From Craft to Profession written by Mary N. Woods and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth study of how the architectural profession emerged in early American history. Mary Woods dispels the prevailing notion that the profession developed under the leadership of men formally schooled in architecture as an art during the late nineteenth century. Instead, she cites several instances in the early 1800s of craftsmen-builders who shifted their identity to that of professional architects. While struggling to survive as designers and supervisors of construction projects, these men organized professional societies and worked for architectural education, appropriate compensation, and accreditation. In such leading architectural practitioners as B. Henry Latrobe, Alexander J. Davis, H. H. Richardson, Louis Sullivan, and Stanford White, Woods sees collaborators, partners, merchandisers, educators, and lobbyists rather than inspired creators. She documents their contributions as well as those, far less familiar, of women architects and people of color in the profession's early days. Woods's extensive research yields a remarkable range of archival materials: correspondence among carpenters; 200-year-old lawsuits; architect-client spats; the organization of craft guilds, apprenticeships, university programs, and correspondence schools; and the structure of architectural practices, labor unions, and the building industry. In presenting a more accurate composite of the architectural profession's history, Woods lays a foundation for reclaiming the profession's past and recasting its future. Her study will appeal not only to architects, but also to historians, sociologists, and readers with an interest in architecture's place in America today. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1999. Book Living the Abundant Life

Download or read book Living the Abundant Life written by Roger Weldon and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Life Endured. Is Not a Life!!! As Christ-Followers we are called to do more than endure life. Created in God's image we are overcomers and more than conquerors with specific tasking from the King of kings. Yet cynicism, negativity, and the frantic pace of life send us the message that we should disengage in order to make it through. Power, riches, and pleasures call out to others and lure them down paths they were never meant to travel. Boredom and broken dreams distract others but from time to time we all see with amazing clarity: The way we are living just isn't the way things were supposed to turn out. There was supposed to be more victory, more joy, more significance; this cannot be all there is to our journey. Our vision is more than simple insight; it is a seed planted in John 10:10 when Jesus said He came to provide more than the wonderful gift of salvation: "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."

Written by an architect, this practice-led ethnography of retirement housing offers new perspectives on environmental gerontology. Through stories and visual vignettes, it presents a range of stakeholders involved in the design, construction, management and habitation of third-age housing in the UK, highlighting the importance of design decisions for the everyday lives of older people. Drawing on unique and interdisciplinary research methods, its fresh approach shows researchers how well-designed retirement housing can enable older people to successfully age in place for longer, and challenges designers, developers and providers to evolve their design practices and products.

This book will enable Salesforce developers and architects to understand how ingenious Salesforce architectures can be created by studying anti-patterns and solutions to problems that can later lead to serious implementation issues. While there are several books on the market that start with the question, “How do I create great Salesforce architecture?” and proceed to a solution from there, this book instead starts by asking, “What tends to go wrong with Salesforce architectures?” and proceeds to a solution from there. In this book, you’ll find out how to identify and mitigate anti-patterns in the technical domains of system architecture, data architecture, and security architecture, along with anti-patterns in the functional domain of solution architecture as well as for integration architecture. You’ll also learn about common anti-patterns affecting your Salesforce development process and governance and, finally, how to spot common problems in how architects communicate their solutions. By the end of this Salesforce book, you’ll have gained the confidence to architect and communicate solutions on the Salesforce platform while dodging common mistakes. What you will learn Create a balanced system architecture by identifying common mistakes around on- and off-platform functionality and interfaces Avoid security problems that arise from anti-patterns on the Salesforce platform Spot common data architecture issues and discover intuitive ways to address them Avoid the dual traps of over- and under-customization in your solution architecture Explore common errors made in deployment setups, test strategy, and architecture governance Understand why bad communication patterns are so overlooked in architecture Who this book is for This book is for Salesforce architects, aspiring architects, developers, consultants, and decision makers who want to start making the right architectural choices or prepare for their journey to CTA. This book helps you gain a professional understanding of Salesforce and its building blocks. It is not code-centric, so you will benefit from both functional and technical experience, but a basic level of platform understanding is required.
