Book Play Activities for the Retarded Child

Download or read book Play Activities for the Retarded Child written by Bernice Wells Carlson and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 224-page hardcover book is designed to provide activities for students in early childhood through grade 2. The authors first outline the needs of the retarded child and then include recreational activities which put the theories into practice. The activities are divided according to the 5 key areas of development: mental health, social adjustment, physical education, language development, and intellectual growth. Each chapter follows a pattern of growth, ranging from the simplest activities, which a child with extremely limited ability can perform, to the more complex. Some specific areas covered in the 8 chapters include informal and imaginative play, choral speaking, follow the leader, table work and games, handicraft skills, and music activities. LKK, 11-76

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘We have to assume that the mind is working no matter what it looks like on the outside. We can’t just judge by appearance…If you take away the label they are human beings.’ Ed Murphy What does it mean to be ‘mentally retarded’? Professors Bogdan and Taylor have interviewed two experts, ‘Ed Murphy’ and ‘Pattie Burt,’ for answers. Ed and Pattie, former inmates of institutions for the retarded, tell us in their own words. Their autobiographies are not always pleasant reading. They describe the physical, mental, and emotional abuses heaped upon them throughout their youth and young adulthood; being spurned, neglected, and ultimately abandoned by family and friends; being labelled and stigmatized by social service professionals armed with tests and preconceptions; being incarcerated and depersonalized by the state. Ed and Pattie survived these experiences—evidence, perhaps, of the indefatigable will of the human spirit to assert its essential humanity—but the wounds they have suffered, and the scars they bear, have not been overcome. They are now contributing, independent, members of society, but the stigma of ‘mental retardation’ remains. Their stories are both true and representative—powerful indictments of our knowledge of, our thinking about, and our ministrations to, the mentally handicapped. The interviewers argue that Ed and Pattie challenge the very concept of ‘mental retardation.’ Retardation, they assert, is an ‘imaginary disease’; our attempts to ‘cure’ it are a hoax. Read Ed’s and Pattie’s accounts and judge for yourself.

Book Fully Alive

Download or read book Fully Alive written by Timothy Shriver and published by Sarah Crichton Books. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a quest for what matters most, Timothy Shriver discovers a radically different, inspiring way of life. At a time when we are all more rudderless than ever, we look for the very best teachers and mentors to guide us. In Fully Alive, an unusual and gripping memoir, Timothy Shriver shows how his teachers have been the world's most forgotten minority: people with intellectual disabilities. In these pages we meet the individuals who helped him come of age and find a deeper and more meaningful way to see the world. Shriver's journey begins close to home, where the quiet legacy of his aunt Rosemary, a Kennedy whose intellectual disability kept her far from the limelight, inspired his family to devote their careers to helping the most vulnerable. He plays alongside the children of Camp Shriver, his mother's revolutionary project, which provided a space for children with intellectual disabilities to play, and years later he gains invaluable wisdom from the incredible athletes he befriends as chairman of the organization it inspired, Special Olympics. Through these experiences and encounters with scholars, spiritual masters, and political icons such as Nelson Mandela, Shriver learns how to find humility and speak openly of vulnerability and faith. Fully Alive is both a moving personal journey and a meditation on some of the greatest wisdom and the greatest contradictions of our society. Is disability to be feared or welcomed, pitied or purged? Shriver argues that we all have different abilities and challenges we should embrace. Here we see how those who appear powerless have turned this seeming shortcoming into a power of their own, and we learn that we are all totally vulnerable and valuable at the same time.
