Book Resurrection and Parousia

Download or read book Resurrection and Parousia written by Joost Holleman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a traditio-historical study of three ideas concerning the eschatological resurrection which Paul brings forward in 1 Corinthians 15:20-23: (a) Jesus' resurrection forms the beginning of the eschatological resurrection; (b) the eschatological resurrection will take place through participation in Jesus' resurrection; (c) the eschatological resurrection will take place at the time of Jesus' parousia. The three ideas are investigated in the following way. Firstly, their occurrence and function in Paul is set out, subsequently their origin is reconstructed, and, finally, analogous Jewish concepts are compared. A critical review of earlier research on these ideas and a literary and historical exegesis of the relevant sections of 1 Corinthians 15 precede the investigations.

Book When the Son of Man Didn t Come

Download or read book When the Son of Man Didn t Come written by Christopher M. Hays and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delay of the Parousia—the second coming of Christ—has vexed Christians since the final decades of the first century. This volume offers a critical, constructive, and interdisciplinary solution to that dilemma. The argument is grounded in Christian tradition while remaining fully engaged with the critical insights and methodological approaches of twenty-first-century scholars. The authors argue that the deferral of Christ’s prophesied return follows logically from the conditional nature of ancient predictive prophecy: Jesus has not come again because God’s people have not yet responded sufficiently to Christ’s call for holy and godly action. God, in patient mercy, remains committed to cooperating with humans to bring about the consummation of history with Jesus’ return. Collaboratively written by an interdisciplinary and ecumenical team of scholars, the argument draws on expertise in biblical studies, systematics, and historical theology to fuse critical biblical exegesis with a powerful theological paradigm that generates an apophatic and constructive Christian eschatology. The authors, however, have done more than tackle a daunting theological problem: as the group traverses issues from higher criticism through doctrine and into liturgy and ethics, they present an innovative approach for how to do Christian theology in the twenty-first-century academy.

Book The Resurrection in Karl Barth

Download or read book The Resurrection in Karl Barth written by R. Dale Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Barth repeatedly spoke of the centrality and unparalleled significance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ for his theological understanding, yet a clear grasp of its nature and scope in Barth continues to find little expression in scholarly literature. This book seeks to draw out the theological substance and systematic implications of Barth's thinking on this theme. Barth's mature understanding of the resurrection concentrates upon the transition from the objective achievement of reconciliation culminating in the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ to its subjective appropriation in the life of the believer, all within a thoroughly christological context. The resurrection may be described as the way of the crucified Lord to others, and is, for Barth, the essential and efficient link between christology proper and the extension of Christ's saving work to others.

Download or read book The Parousia written by Israel P. Warren and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parousia: A Critical Study of the Scripture Doctrines of Christ's Second Coming, His Reign as King; The Resurrection of the Dead; And the General Judgemet It is with the utmost diffidence that I give this book to the public. The peculiar nature of the subject, the wide diversity of opinions concerning it among Christians, and the oft-expressed sentiment that any one who pretends to much confidence as to what the Scriptures design to teach us in relation to it betrays a lack of mental sobriety, if not of sanity, might well deter men of far greater professional ability than myself from anything so rash. But having, after many years of study begun under the most painful perplexities, attained certain views of the subject which afford groat satisfaction to my own mind, I cannot resist the feeling that others similarly perplexed may possibly be equally relieved by a statement of those views and the grounds on which they are based. That feeling has been much strengthened by the favor with which some articles on the Parousia published a year or two ago in the Christian Mirror were received, and the very frequent requests since made that they might be printed in a more permanent form. I am not vain enough to expect that all, perhaps not even many, will accept the views here set forth. Some will reject them outright, without investigation. Many others will stand in doubt, or more actively oppose them, because in a few respects - matters of form and costume chiefly - they differ somewhat from the more commonly accepted views. Still, I venture to crave a candid hearing from all, and an unprejudiced comparison of the positions taken with the Scriptures, "whether these things are so." And if there be a seeming of presumption in venturing to publish any views on such a subject, let this be my apology, that God has taken many ages and used many builders in rearing up the edifice of Christian truth, and though all may not be master builders, yet each one, even the humblest, may bring his brick, which the great Proprietor will find a place for. One or two remarks I maybe permitted to make as to the principles of Interpretation which have guided me in this inquiry. The first is to have primary regard to the ideas and modes of speaking current among the Jews in Christ's day. Says Prof. Stuart, in his Letters to Channing, "Nothing is clearer to my apprehension than that God, when he speaks to men, speaks in language which is used by those whom he addresses." Book Paul and the Parousia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph Plevnik
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2014-04-23
  • ISBN : 162032072X
  • Pages : 395 pages

Download or read book Paul and the Parousia written by Joseph Plevnik and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprisingly, there has never been a comprehensive exegetical study in English of Saint Paul's view of the second coming, or Parousia, of Christ. In this methodical analysis, Joseph Plevnik brings nearly three decades of research to bear on the question of Paul's understanding of this most central tenet of the whole Christ event. With careful attention to the concepts and terms underlying the notion of the Lord's coming, Plevnik examines the key Pauline texts, such as 1 Thess 5:1-11 and 1 Cor 15:23-28. Plevnik then constructs a viable theological interpretation of the great Christian hope, including the language of hope, Christ's parousia and judgment, conflict at Christ's return, the place of the church, and Paul's apocalyptic theology. This volume will be indispensable for any study of Pauline theology, the Parousia, the theology of hope, and apocalypticism. "It is my hope that the book will be not only a scholarly contribution on the topic but also of some personal value to the reader and to the preacher. It may provide a timely reading at the close of the second millennium. The times and seasons, however, are not for us to determine, but a proper preparedness for the Lord's coming is the message of the New Testament, and of Paul in particular. If the Lord's coming may no longer be said to be near, it can still be desired. Marana tha." --Preface

Book The Parousia of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Parousia of Jesus Christ written by Shalom, Min and published by 펜립. This book was released on 2021-08-20 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is translated through AI translator. Hello, I\'m Shalom Min, the servant of Christ The essence of our faith. These days, the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ is considered more brilliant and precious. The world is running faster towards the end. The division is further tarnishing and degenerating the gospel as if it had sensed its end was near, and spreading constant temptation so that Jesus\' gospel could never be engraved on its heart. At a time like this, when it is not enough to love only you, you must be more awake so that you will not be distant from you or lose your love for the first time. Even those who believe in Jesus can fall at any time, so they must be more deeply rooted in the gospel. This book is the property of faith and the confession of faith that I wrote while struggling to protect my faith when I was in the army. The reason why I re-edited it and published it again was to reflect on the nature of my faith and to wake up many people and to convey the full gospel, I planned and practiced it with the impression of the Holy Spirit. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, I sincerely hope that this small book will convey the great love of the Lord, how much he loves you, how much he wants, how much he waits, and how much he longs for you. Listen to the voice of the Lord who calls us. In response to the invitation of the Lord, who invites us with that eternal love and leads us from glory to glory, let us all go before the Lord and before the gospel again! Then I\'ll meet you in heaven!

Download or read book The Parousia of Jesus written by James O. Ellithorpe and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages, various celestial and non-celestial phenomena have featured images portraying the nearness of the end of days or, in the New Testament, the Parousiawhich means the appearance of the second coming of Jesus. Many of these images and concepts are often misunderstood or misapplied. A primary purpose of this book is to correct the errant concepts believed to be true by many people because incorrect doctrine and teaching can have disastrous results. Many people today believe we are living in tumultuous times. However, to set or fix a precise date for the return of Jesus is unbiblical. This book will present a completely different view than what is commonly believed about the end times. By blending the concepts of many schools of thought and outright challenging others, the goal of this book is to help people understand the variety of views on the topic. In short, this book should be read first and then compared with what others are teaching and saying.
