This book was released on 1991 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys were conducted to gain more information on the summer brooding and population distribution of harlequin ducks on high mountain streams in the Gallatin and Custer National Forest. The surveys were completed by walking the stream banks of 53 outlined streams. A majority of the streams are located in four Forest Service Ranger Districts. The four ranger districts are the Big Timer, Livingston, Gardiner, and Bozeman that split the Gallatin National Forest. A summary and habitat description of each stream surveyed is given for each of the streams in the four districts covered. Potential habitat alterations and high recreation use problems are discussed. A total of five harlequin ducks were seen throughout this survey. Three adult males and two females were observed in the Boulder River drainage of the Big Timber Ranger District.
Download or read book Damselflies of Alberta written by John Acorn and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2004-09-21 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With iridescent blues and greens, damselflies are some of the most beautiful flying insects as well as the most primitive. As members of the insect order Odonata they are related to dragonflies but are classified in a separate suborder. These aquatic insects are a delight to the eye and a fascinating creature of study. In Damselflies of Alberta, naturalist John Acorn describes the twenty-two species native to the province. Exhaustively researched, yet written in an accessible style, the author's enthusiasm for these flying neon toothpicks is compelling. More than a field guide, this is a passionate investigation into one of nature's winged marvels of the wetlands.

Download or read book Hydrological and Biological Responses to Forest Practices written by John D. Stednick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alsea Logging and Aquatic Resources Study, commissioned by the Oregon Legislature in 1959, marked the beginning of four decades of research in the Pacific Northwest devoted to understanding the impacts of forest practices on water quality, water quantity, aquatic habitat, and aquatic organism popu- tions. While earlier watershed research examined changes in runoff and erosion from various land uses, this study was the first watershed experiment to focus so heavily on aquatic habitat and organism response to forest practices. The Alsea Watershed Study, as it came to be known, extended over 15 years with seven years of pretreatment calibration measurements, a year of treatment, and seven years of post-treatment monitoring. The research was a cooperative effort with scientists from Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cooperating landowners included the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, the U.S. Forest Service, and a local rancher. It was a remarkable 15-year partnership marked by excellent cooperation among the participants and outstanding coordination among the scientists, many of whom participated actively for the entire period.

Book excerpt: "This conference brought together scientists and managers from federal, state, and local agencies, along with private-sector interests, to examine key concepts involving sustainable ecological systems, and ways in which to apply these concepts to ecosystem management. Session topics were: ecological consequences of land and water use changes, biology of rare and declining species and habitats, conservation biology and restoration ecology, developing and applying ecological theory to management of ecological systems and forest health, and sustainable ecosystems to respond to human needs. A plenary session established the philosophical and historical contexts for ecosystem management."--Title page verso.
