Recent results in radiative decays, including different decay modes of the /eta//sub c/ and the search for scalars, are presented. The systematic study of the hadronic decays of the J//psi/ into a vector-tensor meson pair is discussed, and a detailed analysis of the decay mode J//psi/ .-->. .omega.f2(1270) is described. 12 refs., 12 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: Measurements of the two body decays of the J/[psi] into vector and pseudoscalar meson pairs are presented. Using the measured branching ratios, a phenomenological model of J//psi/ decays indicates that the [eta] and [eta]' are composed only of light and strange quarks, without a gluonium contribution in the [eta]' wavefunction. A measurement of J//psi/ .-->. .gamma pi./sup +/.pi./sup -/.pi./sup +/.pi./sup -/ is presented. The f1 (1285) is observed and its spin and parity are investigated. The /eta//sub c/ is observed to decay to /rho/°/rho/°, and first indications of /eta//sub c/ decays to f2f2 are presented. The spin and parity of the /eta//sub c/ are investigated. 5 figs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: New results on the zeta(2.2) are reported. Mark III has analyzed new J/psi data and reconfirmed the zeta(2.2) in radiative J/psi decays to K/sub S/°K/sub S/° and KK−. The significances of the signals are 3.6 and 4.5 standard deviations, the masses, 2.232 +- 007 +- 007 and 2.230 +- 006 +- 014 GeV/c2, and the widths, 0.018/sub -.015//sup +.023/ +- 010 and 0.026/sub -.016//sup +.020/ +- 017 GeV/c2, for the K/sub S/°K/sub S/° and KK− modes, respectively. The branching ratios are BR(J/psi .-->. .gamma.zeta, zeta .-->. K/sub S/°K/sub S/°) = (3.2/sub -1.3//sub +1.6/ +- 0.7) x 10−5 and BR(J/psi .-->. .gamma.zeta, zeta .-->. K+K−) = (4.2/sub -1.4//sup +1.7/ +- 0.8) x 10−5. 14 refs., 9 figs.

Book excerpt: First results from the MARK III detector at SPEAR are presented based on 2.7 million J/psi decays. The eta/sub c/ is observed in three modes, J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..eta/sub c/, (eta/sub c/ ..-->.. rho anti rho, eta..pi ... pi..−, and phi phi). Using the phi phi mode, the eta/sub c/ spin-parity is determined to be 0−. The known radiative J/psi decays J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..f(f ..-->.. ..pi ... pi..−), ..gamma..eta'(eta' ..-->.. ..gamma..rho°, eta..pi..+..pi..−), ..gamma..f'(f' ..-->.. kappa+kappa−), ..gamma..theta(theta ..-->.. kappa anti kappa), and ..gamma..iota(iota ..-->.. ..pi..kappa anti kappa) are observed and their branching ratios found to be in agreement with previous measurements. In the J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..kappa+kappa− mode a new state is observed at 2.22 GeV and in the J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma gamma..rho° and ..gamma..eta..pi../sup +/..pi..− modes evidence for new structures near 1.4 GeV is presented. 29 references.

Book excerpt: The results of amplitude analyses of the Mark III data on the K[sub s][sup 0]K[sub s][sup 0], K[sup+]K[sup -] and[pi][sup+][pi][sup -] systems produced in J/[psi] radiative decay are shown for the mass range 1--2 GeV. The intensity distributions for the amplitudes having J[sup PC] values 0[sup+2] and 2[sup+2] are presented and discussed. The observed strong production of the f[sub 0](1700) in J/[psi] radiative decay suggests that this state may consist primarily of the lightest scalar glueball state. No significant production of spin 2 is observed in the 1.7 GeV mass region.

Book excerpt: The 1982 statistics on the use of family planning and infertility services presented in this report are preliminary results from Cycle III of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Data were collected through personal interviews with a multistage area probability sample of 7969 women aged 15-44. A detailed series of questions was asked to obtain relatively complete estimates of the extent and type of family planning services received. Statistics on family planning services are limited to women who were able to conceive 3 years before the interview date. Overall, 79% of currently mrried nonsterile women reported using some type of family planning service during the previous 3 years. There were no statistically significant differences between white (79%), black (75%) or Hispanic (77%) wives, or between the 2 income groups. The 1982 survey questions were more comprehensive than those of earlier cycles of the survey. The annual rate of visits for family planning services in 1982 was 1077 visits /1000 women. Teenagers had the highest annual visit rate (1581/1000) of any age group for all sources of family planning services combined. Visit rates declined sharply with age from 1447 at ages 15-24 to 479 at ages 35-44. Similar declines with age also were found in the visit rates for white and black women separately. Nevertheless, the annual visit rate for black women (1334/1000) was significantly higher than that for white women (1033). The highest overall visit rate was for black women 15-19 years of age (1867/1000). Nearly 2/3 of all family planning visits were to private medical sources. Teenagers of all races had higher family planning service visit rates to clinics than to private medical sources, as did black women age 15-24. White women age 20 and older had higher visit rates to private medical services than to clinics. Never married women had higher visit rates to clinics than currently or formerly married women. Data were also collected in 1982 on use of medical services for infertility by women who had difficulty in conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term. About 1 million ever married women had 1 or more infertility visits in the 12 months before the interview. During the 3 years before interview, about 1.9 million women had infertility visits. For all ever married women, as well as for white and black women separately, infertility services were more likely to be secured from private medical sources than from clinics. The survey design, reliability of the estimates and the terms used are explained in the technical notes.

From the studies of the tensor meson, recoiling against the ideally mixed and well understood vector mesons, quark correlations are established and compared with the theoretical expectations of the J/psi decays and the SU(3) predictions. The beginnings of a similar systematic study of the two-body vector scalar decays are also presented.
