Book Restoring Christ Leaving Mormon Jesus for Jesus of the Gospels

Download or read book Restoring Christ Leaving Mormon Jesus for Jesus of the Gospels written by Grant H. Palmer and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have come to greatly prefer the Jesus of the Gospels over the Jesus of Mormonism. This book is an exploration of the foundations of my journey, and what I have chosen to believe, what I hope others might consider. I write on Christianity and I write on Mormonism, with the hope that struggling Latter-day Saints can find a way forward with Christ as their foundation. Looking at both Christianity and Mormonism, my intent is to lift the baby from the bathwater, to restore the Savior, with no desire to save the Jesus of Mormonism. Joseph Smith's Restoration has grave problems. He went astray in my view, because he went beyond the footprint of Jesus' teachings--committing the same mistake he claimed others had made. I suppose this book is a Restoration-type endeav∨ an effort to rediscover what is most basic, most important. How ironic to seek to restore the Christ of the Gospels from Mormonism! So what does a Latter-day Saint do when they discover that the church narrative they were taught all their life has fallen apart? For me, the "revelations" of Mormon Jesus and their practice by Joseph Smith--as especially seen in chapters 9, 17-19--is radically different from the behavior, character and personality of Jesus of Nazareth. For example, Smith produced "scriptures" which depended on nineteenth-century sources, claiming them to be ancient. He initiated a secret "spiritual wife system" which included concubines and slandered women who resisted his sexual advances. He married young teenagers and other men's wives. He cursed his enemies and set up a secret organization, had himself ordained king and sought to violently overthrow the Nation. Comparing the two portraits has been the single most cathartic event since my crisis of faith. I find the Jesus of the Gospels to better reflect God's nature and love, and thus how to clearly respond to others as a disciple.

Book An Insider s View of Mormon Origins

Book excerpt: Quote: 'Why would God reveal to Joseph Smith a faulty [mistranslated] KJV text?' Chap 4: (Evangelical Protestantism in the Book of Mormon) concludes that numerous theological issues addressed in the Book of Mormon probably derived from Smith's Upstate New York religious environment than from the claimed ancient gold plates. Chap 5: (Moroni and the Golden Pot) examines a long list of parallels between a published story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Smith's account of the angel Moroni's visits. The chapter concludes, 'It would stretch credulity to believe that this [long list of parallels between Hoffmann's Golden Pot story and Smith's Moroni story] could be a coincidence, and I therefore think that a debt is owed to E.T.A. Hoffmann and the European traditions ... ' Chap.

Book Jesus Without Joseph Following Christ After Leaving Mormonism A Study Guide

Download or read book Jesus Without Joseph Following Christ After Leaving Mormonism A Study Guide written by Ross J. Anderson and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people have left the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to pursue the historic, biblical Christian faith. The title of this workbook is a reference to the choice many have made to follow Jesus alone in place of the authority of Mormonism and its founder. Yet the distinctive aspects of Mormon culture and church life make it challenging for former Latter-day Saints to become fully integrated into a traditional Christian church. Like immigrants leaving their homeland to come to a new world, they must negotiate a confusing journey into a new cultural setting. To establish a new identity with a new church body, the ex-Mormon must develop a new worldview, new roots, new stories, new assumptions, new perspectives, new values and new symbols. He or she must adapt to a myriad of perplexing new customs and practices in the life of the local church. The lessons in this study guide are designed to provide a map for the journey. They should help former Mormons navigate through the differences in culture, as well as through the emotional issues. The goal is to provide a positive trajectory toward a healthy new life as part of a Christian church. The content is based, in part, on the author's own experiences as an ex-Mormon and as a pastor in Utah for over 35 years. It also draws on extensive research identifying the factors that most commonly help or hinder former Latter-day Saints from connecting with a new congregation. The study and interaction facilitated by this workbook will lead many former Latter-day Saints to greater peace and confidence in their faith journey, and to a deeply satisfying relationship not only with Jesus Christ but also with a new faith community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can’t. God can. Life never lacks for improvement—in ourselves, in our relationships, in just about everything. But all our brave stabs at getting better, if they ever change anything, are incomplete at best, complete failures at worst. Sometimes much worse. Unless . . . The gospel of Jesus Christ is the great “unless” of life—both for those who already believe (but can’t believe the messes they’re still capable of making), as well as those who don’t yet believe but just know their way isn’t working. Recovering Redemption, written with a pastor’s bold intensity and a counselor’s discerning insight, takes you deeply into Scripture to take you deeply inside yourself, discovering that the heart of all our problems is truly the problem of our hearts. But because of what God has done, and because of what God can do, the most confident, contented person you know could actually be you—redeemed through Jesus Christ. None of us, really, can do what’s required to change our lives for the better, taking what’s persistently frustrating and making it perfectly satisfying. Yet as hopeless as that may sound, it is the flat-line truth in which good news comes to life . . . to your life. For just as what’s lost can be found, what’s wrong can—even now—be recovered.

Book Cold Case Christianity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Download or read book Hidden Gospels written by Philip Jenkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-12-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This incisive critique thoroughly and convincingly debunks the claims that recently discovered texts such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary, and even the Dead Sea Scrolls undermine the historical validity of the New Testament. Jenkins places the recent controversies surrounding the hidden gospels in a broad historical context and argues that, far from being revolutionary, such attempts to find an alternative Christianity date back at least to the Enlightenment. By employing the appropriate scholarly and historical methodologies, he demonstrates that the texts purported to represent pristine Christianity were in fact composed long after the canonical gospels found in the Bible. Produced by obscure heretical movements, these texts have attracted much media attention chiefly because they seem to support radical, feminist, and post-modern positions in the modern church. Indeed, Jenkins shows how best-selling books on the "hidden gospels" have been taken up by an uncritical, drama-hungry media as the basis for a social movement that could have powerful effects on the faith and practice of contemporary Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is certainly a place for the arduous work of textual criticism. There is great value in the study of the original languages of Scripture. But centuries of manuscript transmission and adulteration of the text by ecclesiastical authorities have eviscerated our Bible. The only way forward is by revelation from spirit, the original inspiration of Jesus' message. This Restored Gospel of Christ is quite different from what you have read in the popular translations of our day. The Spirit has been restoring the true message of the Christ to humanity over the past generations. From the original authors of the proto-gospels, to those who added more material, to medieval mystics, to others such as George Fox or Levi Dowling, the Lord has been making known her pure truth. And there is a crying need for a full restoration of the good news of Jesus. Love, justice, freethought, a new Way of liberty: the true Gospel is a powerful message of hope and acceptance. All are welcome to walk in the Way and its Power. The rich forsake their greed. False gender classifications melt away. Socially constructed racial lines disappear. The message of the living Christ replaces our fear and hate. And we learn to celebrate with Jesus all that spirit makes known within us. Let's savor life.FROM THE BOOK: "37 In times to come the gospel will be corrupted from a message of hope, to one of despair; from a message about living in this wonderful world, to one of hating this world; 38 From a gospel of acceptance, to one of prejudice and rejection of "the other;" from a message about the true God, to one about an anthropomorphic being;39 From a gospel of freedom, to one of religious rules and enslavement; from a message of liberty, to one of pseudo-spirituality;40 From a gospel of equality, to one of male superiority; from a message of being fully human, to one of denying our humanity;41 From a gospel that celebrates life, to one that wishes to restrict and limit life; from a message about God as the interconnecting spirit, to one about God as a monotheistic being;42 From a gospel that arises from the natural love within people, to a "supernatural" gospel devoid of truth; from a message of joy, to one of religious burnout and depression;43 From a gospel of sensual pleasure (which is the Way), to one that denies pleasure...as evil; from a message that affirms the best within us, to one that decries all humanity as abysmally evil and sinful; 44 From a gospel that I proclaim as good news, to one that a religious bureaucracy proclaims as a death knell; from a message that increases our sense of self-worth, to one that tells us to hate our very selfhood;45 From a gospel that says everyone has the light, to one that denies this truth; from a message that there is that of God in every person, to one that says all babies are born in sin;46 From a gospel that teaches us to work for peace, to one that glorifies warfare as the highest good; from a message of justice for the poor, to one of favoritism for the rich;47 From a gospel about destroying the culture of selfishness, to one of extoling greed as the highest good; from a message about building a new world of justice and Jubilee, to one of teaching acceptance of poverty in the hope of immortality;48 Yes, the Gospel of the Living Christ that sets forth the Way and its Power will be slowly morphed into a message to build an institution, a bureaucracy. 49 This altered gospel will try to tell us that we should forget this life (our only one) and focus on a mythic future world that has lots of gold, lots of food and drink, and lots of riches.50 Just forget about living now, forget about justice now, forget about equality now, forget about radical love and life-changing dedication now, forget about sensual pleasure now, forget about any life-affirming ideas."ENJOY READING THE RESTORED GOOD NEWS OF CHRIST

Book Can We Trust the Bible on the Historical Jesus

Download or read book Can We Trust the Bible on the Historical Jesus written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features a learned and fascinating debate between two great Bible scholars about the New Testament as a reliable source on the historical Jesus. Bart Ehrman, an agnostic New Testament scholar, debates Craig Evans, an evangelical New Testament scholar, about the historical Jesus and what constitutes "history." Their interaction includes such compelling questions as: What are sound methods of historical investigation? What are reliable criteria for determining the authenticity of an ancient text? What roles do reason and inference play? And, of course, interpretation? Readers of this debate—regardless of their interpretive inclinations and biases—are sure to find some confirmation of their existing beliefs, but they will surely also find an honest and well-informed challenge to the way they think about the historical Jesus. The result? A more open, better informed, and questioning mind, which is better prepared for discovering both truth and contrivance. The debate between Ehrman and Evans along with Stewart's introductory framework make this book an excellent primer to the study of the historical Jesus, and readers will come away with a deeper appreciation for the ongoing quest for the historical Jesus.

Book Restoring the Roots of Our Relationship with Jesus

Download or read book Restoring the Roots of Our Relationship with Jesus written by Dan Alan Rodriguez and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches" (Rev. 2:29 NASB) A prophetic call is going out to the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit is calling for a return to holy living in the fear of the Lord, through obedience to His Word. It is time to pull out all the stops and be completely and unreservedly sold out to God. This is what He requires of you and me. He does not want us to be halfhearted or lukewarm. He wants us fired-up and ready to obey Him. This is a prophetic call to return to the things that matter to God. He is waiting with open arms of grace and compassion. He will never turn away from us if we will return to Him with every fiber of our being. Today, many are seeking an easy Christianity that requires no accountability and makes no demands. Many have forgotten the holy requirements of God that propel true believers into higher intensities of His presence and power. Honor, reverence, awe, relationship and fellowship, faithfulness, loyalty, obedience, humility, and devotion are scriptural keys to this deeper walk with the Lord. Yet, many of these radical and life-altering principles are being minimized, disregarded, and even rejected in some Christian circles. In these pages, we rediscover their timeless value and irrefutable necessity for the true disciple of the Lord Jesus.

Book excerpt: A gripping story of how an entire family, deeply enmeshed in Mormonism for thirty years, found their way out and found faith in Jesus Christ. For thirty years, Lynn Wilder, once a tenured faculty member at Brigham Young University, and her family lived in, loved, and promoted the Mormon Church. Then their son Micah, serving his Mormon mission in Florida, had a revelation: God knew him personally. God loved him. And the Mormon Church did not offer the true gospel. Micah's conversion to Christ put the family in a tailspin. They wondered, Have we believed the wrong thing for decades? If we leave Mormonism, what does this mean for our safety, jobs, and relationships? Is Christianity all that different from Mormonism anyway? As Lynn tells her story of abandoning the deception of Mormonism to receive God's grace, she gives a rare look into Mormon culture, what it means to grow up Mormon, and why the contrasts between Mormonism and Christianity make all the difference in the world. Whether you are in the Mormon Church, are curious about Mormonism, or simply are looking for a gripping story, Unveiling Grace will strengthen your faith in the true God who loves you no matter what.
