Book Restoration Potential for Reproduction by Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis in the Saint John River New Brunswick

Download or read book Restoration Potential for Reproduction by Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis in the Saint John River New Brunswick written by Samuel Nelson Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012 the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) listed the Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) of the Saint John River, New Brunswick, as endangered as part of the Bay of Fundy designatable unit. This listing was due to an apparent rapid collapse and subsequent absence of presumed native origin Striped Bass, juvenile recruitment, and spawning by the species following the completion of the large Mactaquac Dam in 1968. Expert reports hypothesized that alteration in the river flow and temperature regime imposed upon the Saint John River downstream from the Mactaquac Dam were responsible for the disappearance, however, no recovery efforts or exploratory studies were conducted, and the native Striped Bass population was deemed extinct. This dissertation explored the collapse of the Saint John River Striped Bass starting with a complete historic perspective of the species in the Saint John River and concluded with a possible means to recover the population that was once believed to be lost. Within the chapters of this thesis I first summarize the history of Striped Bass in the Saint John River and explore why the current understanding of the species status needs to be updated. I locate and sample juvenile Striped Bass within the Saint John River for the first time since 1979, prove their native ancestry, and monitor their year class success. Native adult Striped Bass matching juvenile ancestry are tagged and tracked to determine the timing and location of their upstream spawning migration and the migrations of non-native adult Striped Bass within the Saint John River are also explored. I summarize information on Striped Bass winter ecology in Canada, then locate and describe four key winter habitats used by Striped Bass in the Saint John River. Finally, I draw a possible connection between the regulated discharges at the Mactaquac Generating Station to the success of Striped Bass juvenile recruitment observed in the Saint John River over six consecutive years of sampling. My general conclusion is that spawning by native Striped Bass in the Saint John River downstream of the Mactaquac Dam has been severely impacted, though not eliminated, by the regulated discharges resulting for power production. These discharge regimes have resulted in infrequently successful year classes, poor recruitment and possible spawning failures; however, spawning by surviving native origin Striped Bass may be recovered through the management of spring discharges. Managing for extended periods of moderate, sustained flow of sufficient volume and duration to keep Striped Bass eggs in suspension during the incubation period may restore successful Striped Bass spawning and juvenile recruitment in the Saint John River, New Brunswick.

Book Striped Bass and Other Morone Culture

Download or read book Striped Bass and Other Morone Culture written by R.M. Harrell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-05-23 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up-to-date discussion of the culture of striped bass and other Morone spp. The subject matter is broken down into functional components of the spawning, husbandry, and economics of the industry, and is written by some of the leading scientists in each of the respective areas of discussion. The chapters on reproduction, nutrition, environmental requirements, transportation, economics and fish processing are not found anywhere else in the striped bass literature. The chapter on water quality takes a very non-traditional approach to considering the impact water quality has on the production success of Morone and offers some very thought-provoking ideas on water management.Primarily written as a reference work, this book is intended to complement existing technique manuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of next-generation sequencing technologies has revolutionized the field of molecular ecology, facilitating increasingly fine-scale detection of genetic differences among populations and adaptationally significant mutations. In this thesis, I use genomics to advance solve longstanding mysteries of Striped Bass genetics and lay the groundwork for future studies. In the first chapter, I characterize a group of Striped Bass that were thought to be extirpated in the Saint John River, but likely survive as a remnant population. In the second chapter, I investigate connectivity and relatedness of Striped Bass populations more widely across their native range on the North American Atlantic Coast. I found that Gulf of St. Lawrence, Shubenacadie River, and Saint John River populations were all very distinct from each other and from US populations. US Striped Bass, however, could be separated into three major regions: Hudson River-Kennebec River, Chesapeake Bay-Delaware River, and Roanoke River-Cape Fear River. Demonstrating that this work is useful for management, my SNP loci were able to assign 99% of Striped Bass to these six regions, the first time Roanoke River Striped Bass have been reliably distinguished from Chesapeake Bay bass. Additionally, the presence of apparent US-origin Striped Bass on the northeastern coast of Nova Scotia raises important questions about movement patterns of Striped Bass in this area and highlights the importance of further study. In the third chapter, I used computer modelling simulations to assess the performance of four recent techniques used to find associations between phenotypes and genotypes. I found that Random Forest algorithm with population correction performed similarly to a recent, complex model implemented in confounder adjusted multiple testing. Finally, in chapter four I created 9 novel tools and used them to create an automated text-mining pipeline that can scan full-text articles and extract sentences that contain associations between genes and ecological variables. This pipeline is the first step toward improving genome annotations of non-model organisms such as Striped Bass. Together, these four chapters lay important groundwork for future genomic research both for Striped Bass and other ecologically important species.

Book excerpt: The striped bass is indigenous to coastal waters of the Maritime Provinces, supporting a small commercial fishery in the past as a by-catch species in the shad fishery and becoming increasingly popular as a sport fish. This document presents papers given at workshop presentations, including a history of the fishery in the Bay of Fundy, population biology, management and restoration in Maine and New Brunswick, research being conducted, culture techniques, and observations on striped bass in the Shubenacadie River system. Two position statements are also included, dealing with culture and management in the Maritimes, and possible introduction into P.E.I.
