What can we do to counteract and even reverse the worst of these effects? Restore damaged ecosystems. In twelve brief chapters, the book introduces readers to the basics of restoration project planning, monitoring, and adaptive management. It explains abiotic factors such as landforms, soil, and hydrology that are the building blocks to successfully recovering microorganism, plant, and animal communities. Additional chapters cover topics such as invasive species and legal and financial considerations. Each chapter concludes with recommended reading and reference lists, and the book can be paired with online resources for teaching. Perfect for introductory classes in ecological restoration or for practitioners seeking constructive guidance for real-world projects, Primer of Ecological Restoration offers accessible, practical information on recent trends in the field.

Book Bigger than Ben Hur

Download or read book Bigger than Ben Hur written by Barbara Ryan and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1880, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ became a best-seller. The popular novel spawned an 1899 stage adaptation, reaching audiences of over 10 million, and two highly successful film adaptations. For over a century, it has become a ubiquitous pop cultural presence, representing a deeply powerful story and monumental experience for some and a defining work of bad taste and false piety for others. The first and only collection of essays on this pivotal cultural icon, Bigger Than “Ben-Hur” addresses Lew Wallace’s beloved classic to explore its polarizing effect and to expand the contexts within which it can be studied. In the essays gathered here, scholars approach Ben-Hur from multiple directions—religious and secular, literary, theatrical, and cinematic—to understand not just one story in varied formats but also what they term the “Ben-Hur tradition.” Drawing from a wide range of disciplines, contributions include the rise of the Protestant novel in the United States; relationships between and among religion, spectacle, and consumerism; the “New Woman” in early Hollywood; and a “wish list” for future adaptations, among others. Together, these essays explore how this remarkably fluid story of faith, love, and revenge has remained relevant to audiences across the globe for over 130 years.

Book The Restoration of the Gospel

Download or read book The Restoration of the Gospel written by Osborne J. P. Widtsoe and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book on the Restoration of the Gospel is not to provide a comprehensive history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but rather to give an overview of the Restoration itself. It assumes that something has been restored and tells the story of how this restoration came about. When preaching abroad, missionaries of the Church have often encountered two questions: what was restored and how was it restored? These chapters attempt to provide partial answers to these questions. They focus on the restoration of the necessary priesthood and authorities to perform divine duties, as well as the organization of the Church, its priesthood quorums, auxiliary associations, and community and family life. Essentially, the chapters describe the restoration of divine authority and correct organization. Once these were restored, it was necessary to correct the world's understanding of God and the duties of man in relation to God's kingdom.

Book Ecological Restoration Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Afshin Akhtar-Khavari
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-01-25
  • ISBN : 0429887256
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Ecological Restoration Law written by Afshin Akhtar-Khavari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological restoration is as essential as sustainable development for the health of the biosphere. Restoration, however, has been a low priority of most countries' environmental laws, which tend to focus narrowly on rehabilitation of small, discrete sites rather than the more ambitious recovery of entire ecosystems and landscapes. Through critical theoretical perspectives and topical case studies, this book's diverse contributors explore a more ambitious agenda for ecological restoration law. Not only do they investigate current laws and other governance mechanisms; they also consider the philosophical and methodological bases for the law to take ecological restoration more seriously. Through exploration of themes relating to time, space, geography, semiotics, social justice, and scientific knowledge, this book offers innovative and critical insights into ecological restoration law.

Book The Word of Restoration

Download or read book The Word of Restoration written by William Vincent and published by RWG Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As 2022 continues, I will restore everything that the Canker Worm and Grasshopper have taken from you. This country will not remain under the rule of Persia's prince. God is unleashing a fresh source of energy, and the Spirit of God says, "And it shall come, it shall appear, it shall manifest in 2022!" Angels have been summoned over the United States of America. The Holy Spirit declares, "Do not be surprised that this presence has appeared among My people; it will be a frequent occurrence. Angels have been beckoned all around the United States of America; angels have been invited by soldiers who have prayed and worshiped, as well as individuals who have sacrificed. The ground has been prepped. You've plowed, and the tough earth has finally been broken up." God declares, "The Lord's angel will come to this country and visit the churches, including My church. Do not be surprised that this prophet has spoken it tonight." "Angels are fighting over you in the midst of you," God says now.

Book Resurrection and the Restoration of Israel

Download or read book Resurrection and the Restoration of Israel written by Jon Douglas Levenson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many famous antique texts are misunderstood and many others have been completely dismissed, all because the literary style in which they were written is unfamiliar today. So argues Mary Douglas in this controversial study of ring composition, a technique which places the meaning of a text in the middle, framed by a beginning and ending in parallel. To read a ring composition in the modern linear fashion is to misinterpret it, Douglas contends, and today's scholars must reevaluate important antique texts from around the world. Found in the Bible and in writings from as far a field as Egypt, China, Indonesia, Greece, and Russia, ring composition is too widespread to have come from a single source. Does it perhaps derive from the way the brain works? What is its function in social contexts? The author examines ring composition, its principles and functions, in a cross-cultural way. She focuses on ring composition in Homer's Iliad, the Bible's book of Numbers, and, for a challenging modern example, Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy, developing a persuasive argument for reconstruing famous books and rereading neglected ones.

Book Criminology as a Moral Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony E Bottoms
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2023-09-07
  • ISBN : 1509965343
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Criminology as a Moral Science written by Anthony E Bottoms and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes an explicit recognition of criminology as a moral science: a philosophically textured appreciation of the presence and role of values in people's reasoning and motivation, set within an empirically rigorous social-scientific account. This endeavour requires input from both criminologists and philosophers, and careful dialogue between them. Criminology as a Moral Science provides such a dialogue, not least about the so-called 'fact-value distinction', but also about substantive topics such as guilt and shame. The book also provides philosophically-informed accounts of morality in practice in several criminological contexts: these include whistleblowing practices within a police service; the dilemmas of mothers about who and what to tell about a partner's imprisonment; and how persistent offenders begin to try to 'turn their lives around' to desist from crime. The issues raised go to the heart of some currently pressing topics within criminology, notably the development of 'evidence-based practice', which requires some kind of stable bridge to be built between research evidence ('facts') and proposals for policy ('evaluative recommendations').
