Book excerpt: William Winchester established Westminster in 1764 by laying out 45 town lots along the main road to Baltimore. The lots sold quickly, and soon there was a small but thriving community. When Carroll County was established in 1837, Westminster was named the county seat, bringing government officials, judges, lawyers, and visitors to the town. Hotels, homes, and stores sprang up to serve the influx of new residents and visitors. The Western Maryland Railway reached Westminster in 1861. In 1863, Confederate general J. E. B. Stuart's cavalry arrived en route to Gettysburg and battled a small detachment of Union cavalry responsible for guarding the vital railroad link to Baltimore. After Stuart's troops continued on to Pennsylvania, Union troops established an important depot, with supplies arriving from Baltimore for transport to the battlefield and wounded soldiers returning to be cared for in Westminster's hotels, churches, and homes. Westminster prospered throughout the 19th and 20th centuries as it became the center of an industrial and agricultural community.

Book excerpt: Explore the struggle for racial justice in Britain through the lens of one of Britain's most prominent and controversial black journalists and campaigners. Born in Trinidad during the dying days of colonialism, Darcus Howe became an uncompromising champion of racial justice. The book examines how Howe's unique political outlook was inspired by the example of his friend and mentor C. L. R. James, and forged in the heat of the American civil rights movement, as well as Trinidad's Black Power Revolution. Howe took a leading role in the defining struggles in Britain against institutional racism in the police, the courts and the media. Renegade focuses on his part as a defendant in the trial of the Mangrove Nine, the high point of Black Power in Britain; his role in conceiving and organizing the Black People's Day of Action, the largest ever demonstration by the black community in Britain; and his later work as a prominent journalist and political commentator.

Book excerpt: This is a second Testified for the death of Iraq, accordance with the prophecies. In 1981, the war between Iran and Iraq broke out, lasting eight years. It was an animalism war. After the end of the Iran-Iraq war, a second war directly broke out when Saddam Hussein conquered Kuwait in 1991. As Saddam Hussein lost the war, this caused the imposition of the economic blockade. The siege was too harsh and bitterly, which stretched for years. Society began to collapse, turning Iraq into a failed state. This novel is about the life of a writer who suffered repression during the period between the end of the Iran-Iraq war and the Gulf war in 1991, with the siege as well as the barbarism of Saddam Hussein and his regime. FROM THE EDITOR Babylons Shadow is an interesting novel. The books setting is exotic, which will interest readers who are unfamiliar with the culture the author writes about. The story is intriguing, and it provides an insight into the conflict in the Middle East.

Book Screw Business As Usual

Download or read book Screw Business As Usual written by Richard Branson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RICHARD BRANSON, one of the world's most famous and admired business leaders, argues that it's time to turn capitalism upside down-to shift our values from an exclusive focus on profit to also caring for people, communities and the planet. As he writes: "It's a vibrant and definite sea change from the way business was always done, when financial profit was a driving force. Today, people aren't afraid to say, Screw business as usual!-and show they mean it. "It's amazing how I keep coming across the same message, from bustling global cities to the townships of South Africa to small villages in India to G8 climate conferences. "It's no coincidence that so many people are talking about the same thing. There's a real buzz in the air. Change is happening. "People often associate me with challenges, with trying to break records while sailing the Atlantic or flying in a jet stream in a balloon or going into space with Virgin Galactic. But this book isn't just about fun and adventure and exceeding one's wildest dreams. It's a different kind of business book. It's about revolution. My message is a simple one: business as usual isn't working. In fact, business as usual is wrecking this planet. Resources are being used up; the air, the sea, the land are all heavily polluted. The poor are getting poorer. Many are dying of starvation or because they can't afford a dollar a day for lifesaving medicine. "But my message is not all doom and gloom. I will describe how I think business can help fix things and create a more prosperous world for everyone. I happen to believe in business because I believe that business is a force for good. By that I mean that doing good is good for business. "Doing the right thing can be profitable. I will show how this works step by step in the following pages. It's the core message of this book. I often say, 'Have fun and the money will come.' I still believe that, but now I am saying, 'Do good, have fun and the money will come.'"

Download or read book Lucky in Love written by Deborah Coonts and published by Chestnut Street Press. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Evanovich…with a dash of CSI.” – Publishers Weekly (review of Lucky Stiff) Everyone Has a Hidden Talent For Lucky O’Toole it’s murder…solving it. Surviving in Sin City takes cunning, a pair of five-inch heels, and a wiseass attitude. Lucky has mastered them all and has a pair of legs she uses to kick butt and turn heads. As the Chief Problem Solver for the Babylon, Las Vegas’s most over-the-top destination, mischief is in her job description. She’s good at her job. She’s less good at life. But who has time for a life when there’s a killer on the loose? LUCKY IN LOVE Lucky O’Toole, the Vice President of Customer Relations for the Babylon, one of Las Vegas’ most over-the-top strip properties, is seriously regretting booking a reality television show, The Forever Game, into the small theater at her hotel. One thing she knows for sure: Vegas does NOT need a dose of reality. The four couples competing in The Forever Game add their own mischief to the incendiary mix normally available in Sin City while competing for a Las Vegas wedding extravaganza. The host of the show, Trey Gold, appears interested only in keeping the spotlight on himself while the contestants run-wild sampling all Vegas has to offer, threatening to blow the whole show out of the water. Not only must Lucky keep the couples from killing each other, killing their relationships, or ending up on the front page of the Review-Journal, she has to navigate the rocky road to love herself. Teddie, her live-in lover, is leaning more-and-more towards chasing a new dream as a singer, leaving Vegas…and Lucky behind. And a new French chef seems determined to muddy the murky waters of love even further. Then there’s Lucky’s mother, Mona, who never could leave well enough alone… A light, funny, romantic mystery providing a Vegas escape appropriate for anyone looking for a good laugh. AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBORAH COONTS Why did you decide to write humor? I’m not sure I decided to add snark to the Lucky books, specifically to Lucky’s own voice, it just happened that way. When I was a kid, my mouth always got me into trouble. Finally, I’ve found a way to harness the sarcasm for the Forces of Good—or at least in a way not to anger my grandmother. And when Lucky started talking to me, she had a strong dose of sass in her. The Lucky O'Toole Vegas Adventure series is hard to categorize. Is that by design? When I set out to write Wanna Get Lucky?, I knew I wanted to write a romp through Las Vegas. I had the characters and the setting but no real understanding of narrative drive. So, I threw a young woman out of a tour helicopter into the middle of the Pirate Show and let the story unfold. A bit of murder to keep the plot moving, some wisecracking and Vegas mischief to make you laugh, and some romance to keep it interesting. A bit of a mash up, but it works. PRAISE FOR THE LUCKY O’TOOLE VEGAS ADVENTURE SERIES “Lucky’s story is funny, fast-paced, exuberant and brilliantly realized.” - Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author “Get ready to win big--with a novel that will keep you glued to the pages all the way to the end.” - Brenda Novak, New York Times & USA Today bestselling author "More fun than a winning streak in Vegas. Coonts provides the perfect solution for readers waiting for the next Stephanie Plum book.” - Booklist
