Book excerpt: Responses of Jamaican and American Deaf Groups to Stigma asserts that Goffman's 1963 theory of stigma does not account for cultural variables which affect how deaf individuals deal with the perception that deafness is negatively different and that deaf individuals in selected cultures use different rules to contend with this perception. The people studied for this book were between eighteen and twenty-two years of age, and were from educational institutions in Jamaica and the United States. The book reveals several important points. First, that stigma is transactional. Deaf persons locate stigma in the sender, as they exert control over their communication interactions, they become agents in the transaction between themselves and hearing persons. Second, deaf persons who regard themselves as part of the deaf culture are proud of their cultural identity and do not defensively cower as Goffman suggests. And third, the metatheoretical assumptions of the interpretive paradigm guided the study to facilitate the emergence of another perspective on stigma from the voices of deaf persons themselves and not from a nomothetic covering law. The book also makes several suggestions to the Jamaican Government, African American and White American researchers who are deaf, as well as to the historically Black college, Howard University, to facilitate communication between the deaf and hearing cultures.

The theory is summarized in seven basic propositions, several of which have been previously tested and supported. The research contained here expands the depth of the work by examining attributes and levels of mateship in several American co-cultures, one Caribbean culture, and one Asian culture, and extends the breadth of the work by moving into the areas of relational quality, maintenance, and conflict. Seven propositions presented are 1) perceived self-concept support is the basis of interpersonal attraction; 2) different types of perceived self-concept support are the basis for different types of interpersonal relationships; 3) different types of self-concept support are the basis for entry into and increasing intensity of interpersonal relationships; 4) the type and form of self-concept support is homogeneous by culture; 5) conflict which threatens self-concept support on crucial relationship variables—the lack of it or attacks on it—is the most potentially dangerous type of conflict in interpersonal relationships; 6) negotiation of differences in perceptions of self-concept support on crucial relationship variables cements interpersonal relationships; and 7) quality interpersonal relationships consist of intimacy, personal growth, and effective communication on the crucial relationship variables.

The event sought to encourage interdisciplinary academic discourse on Caribbean migratory populations, foregrounding the role of communicative practices in sustaining their traditions. In keeping with the spirit of the symposium, this volume applies a transdisciplinary lens to understanding the diversity and complexity of Caribbean peoples’ production of and engagement with communication practices.
