Book Adaptation of a Neutron Diffraction Detector to Coded Aperture Imaging

Download or read book Adaptation of a Neutron Diffraction Detector to Coded Aperture Imaging written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coded aperture neutron imaging system developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has demonstrated that it is possible to record not only a flux of thermal neutrons at some position, but also the directions from whence they came. This realization of an idea which defied the conventional wisdom has provided a device which has never before been available to the nuclear physics community. A number of potential applications have been explored, including (1) counting warheads on a bus or in a storage area, (2) investigating inhomogeneities in drums of Pu-containing waste to facilitate non-destructive assays, (3) monitoring of vaults containing accountable materials, (4) detection of buried land mines, and (5) locating solid deposits of nuclear material held up in gaseous diffusion plants.

Book Thermal Neutron Detectors with Discrete Anode Pad Readout

Download or read book Thermal Neutron Detectors with Discrete Anode Pad Readout written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new two-dimensional thermal neutron detector concept that is capable of very high rates is being developed. It is based on neutron conversion in 3He in an ionization chamber (unity gas gain) that uses only a cathode and anode plane; there is no additional electrode such as a Frisch grid. The cathode is simply the entrance window, and the anode plane is composed of discrete pads, each with their own readout electronics implemented via application specific integrated circuits. The aim is to provide a new generation of detectors with key characteristics that are superior to existing techniques, such as higher count rate capability, better stability, lower sensitivity to background radiation, and more flexible geometries. Such capabilities will improve the performance of neutron scattering instruments at major neutron user facilities. In this paper, we report on progress with the development of a prototype device that has 48 x 48 anode pads and a sensitive area of 24cm x 24cm.

Book Characterizing the Detector Response and Testing the Performance of a New Well Counter for Neutron Coincidence Measurements of Plutonium in Residues

Download or read book Characterizing the Detector Response and Testing the Performance of a New Well Counter for Neutron Coincidence Measurements of Plutonium in Residues written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thermal neutron detector has been developed that integrates the neutron capture medium (6LiF) and scintillator (ZnS) into a thin screen, which is coupled to wavelength shifting fiber-optic ribbon. The 6LiF and ZnS powders are incorporated in a hydrogenous binder. The detector is constructed of alternating layers of the capture/scintillator screen and the fiber-optic ribbon. The scintillation light produced in the ZnS is absorbed and reemitted in the fibers and is transported to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The detector is sensitive to gamrna radiation, but the difference in the pulse decay times of gamma-ray and neutron events allows for discrimination using pulse shape analysis (PSA). To determine the feasibility of using PSA with this detector, a number of intrinsic characteristics of the detector have been measured; specifically, the number of photoelectrons produced at the photocathode of the PMT from the average neutron capture event in the screen and the temperature stability of the detector with respect to pulse shape. The number of photons that reach the PMTs was measured with two different PMTs. One was a typical PMT with single-photoelectron resolution, and the other was a Hybrid PMT comprised of a photocathode coupled to a PIN diode with few-photoelectron resolution. The number of photons that reach the PMTs is between 1600 and 2200, which is sufficient for PSA. The sensitivity of pulse shape to temperature has also been evaluated. Although the pulse decay time changes with varying temperature between -25 to +50 C, the normalized detector pulses have approximately the same amplitude around 400 ns. This results in a stable zero-crossing time of the 400-ns delay-line shaped pulse, and thus the PSA is independent of temperature. A four-sided prototype well counter has been built, It has a short neutron die-away time ([tau]

Book Development of New Storage Phosphors for Thermal Neutron Detection

Download or read book Development of New Storage Phosphors for Thermal Neutron Detection written by Andrei Sidorenko and published by Delft University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of thermal neutrons in crystallography started in 1947. Since that time position sensitive detectors for thermal neutrons became of increasing importance for various applications such as small angle scattering, neutron reflection and diffraction studies as well as radiography and tomography. Contents include: Introduction, Defining the characteristics of neutron storage phosphors and selection of materials, Experimental techniques, Luminescence and thermoluminescence, Complex study of radiation induced defects, Storage properties of Ce3+ doped haloborate phosphors enriched with 10-B isotope, Spectroscopic and storage properties of LiLnSiO4:Ce3+,Sm3+, Concluding remarks.
