Book Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon

Download or read book Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon written by J. Robert Wright and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Wisdom literature of the Old Testament, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon were all thought by the early church fathers to have derived from the hand of Solomon. To their minds the finest wisdom about the deeper issues of life prior to the time of God's taking human form in Jesus Christ was to be found in these books. As in all the Old Testament, they were quick to find types and intimations of Christ and his church that would make the ancient Word relevant to the Christians of their day. Of extant commentaries on Ecclesiastes none are so profound as the eight homilies of Gregory of Nyssa, even though they cover only the first three chapters of the book. Joining Gregory among those most frequently excerpted in this volume are Augustine, Ambrose, Gregory the Great, Origen, John Cassian, John Chrysostom, Athanasius, Bede the Venerable, and Jerome. Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil the Great, and Cyril of Jerusalem lead a cast of other less frequently cited fathers, and then there remains a large cast of supporting players, some of whose work is translated here into English for the first time. This Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume offers a rich trove of wisdom on Wisdom for the enrichment of the church today.

Book The Pulpit Commentary Volume 4

Download or read book The Pulpit Commentary Volume 4 written by Spence-Jones, Henry and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 4934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulpit Commentary was first published between 1880 and 1919 and is a highly respected work written by conservative, trustworthy men. Containing over 22,000 pages and 95,000 entries, it is one of the largest and best-selling homiletic commentary sets of all time. It was directed by editors Joseph Exell and Henry Donald Maurice Spence-Jones and utilized more than 100 authors over a 30-year span. When reading this commentary, it is not difficult to see why it has remained a favorite amongst pastors for more than 100 years. There are three key elements which set this apart from its contemporaries, the first being that it gives an exposition, or verse-by-verse, annotation of each verse in the Bible. The second element is that it explores the framework of the text, the homiletics. Finally, it supplies the homilies with multiple model sermons from various authors. Also included is a translation as well as historical and geographical information. The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle declared, “This commentary bids fair to take a conspicuous place among the ever-multiplying aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures. It will revive the great work of Lange, and will far exceed the Speaker's Commentary in the bulk and fullness of its material. The peculiarity of the Pulpit Commentary is that it offers special assistance to the preacher: first by giving him a critical and exegetical exposition of the text of Scripture, and then providing him with succinct and helpful directions as to the preachable aspects of the chapter and paragraph already explained." The print edition of this set typically retails for more than $1,000 making the current offered price a very good bargain. Due to its size, it has been broken up into nine separate volumes: Volume 1 Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 Judges to 2 Kings Volume 3 1 Chronicles to Job Volume 4 Psalms to Song of Songs Volume 5 Isaiah to Daniel Volume 6 Hosea to Malachi Volume 7 Matthew to John Volume 8 Act to Philippians Volume 9 Colossians to Revelation The footnotes have been placed in line with the text with each footnote number enclosed in red brackets (i.e.: []) and the text in green. There is also a linked table of contents at the beginning of each volume for ease of navigation. Book The Ministry Vol 11 No 04

Download or read book The Ministry Vol 11 No 04 written by Various Authors and published by Living Stream Ministry. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of The Ministry presents the first eight messages given during the 2005 fall term of the full-time training in Anaheim, California. The general subject of this series of messages is entitled "The Overcoming Life as Portrayed in Song of Songs." This general subject is based upon an intrinsic revelation in the Scriptures related to our overcoming and our love relationship with the Lord. This is demonstrated in Romans 8:37--the "theme verse" of this entire series of messages, which says, "In all these things we more than conquer through Him who loved us." The Greek word translated "more than conquer" is hypernikao, which literally means "super-overcome" or "more than overcome." Hence, we more than overcome through Him who loved us. According to this verse, the ones who are really loved by God become super-overcomers, more than conquerors. There is a deep, sweet, rich, essential, intrinsic, organic, and experiential connection between love and overcoming. In Song of Songs the lover of Christ overcomes in four stages: in the first stage (1:2--2:7) she overcomes the attraction of the world by being captivated by Christ; in the second stage (2:8--3:5) she overcomes the self, which secludes her from the presence of Christ, by becoming one with the cross of Christ; in the third stage (3:6--5:1) she overcomes the old creation (the physical things) by living in the ascension of Christ in resurrection after her self has been dealt with by the cross; and in the fourth stage (5:2--6:13) she overcomes the flesh, the natural man, the old man, by living within the veil, requiring a deeper experience of the cross. Last of all, we present a concluding set of testimonies from some who participated in the recent gospel move in the Russian-speaking world.

Book Song of Songs

  • Author : Graeme Watson
  • Publisher : SPCK
  • Release : 2014-05-15
  • ISBN : 0281066914

Download or read book Song of Songs written by Graeme Watson and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its recorded beginning before Christ, this biblical poem was widely, and in fact exclusively, interpreted both by Jews and Christians as a hymn of God's passionate love for his chosen people. The Song of Songs is however a mysterious book, and the more modern reading of it as a celebration of human erotic love has largely displaced this older interpretation. Here, the author presents a contemporary mystical reading, with reference to some later Christian poetry, including John Donne, George Herbert and R. S. Thomas. 'This imaginatively rich study draws on one of the most complex books of the Bible in order to offer clear, practical guidance for prayer. Graeme Watson also helps us to pray more honestly; the Song of Songs shows us what it is to long for a divine Lover who is experienced most often as an elusive, yet infinitely desirable, Presence.' Professor Ellen F. Davis, Duke University Divinity School? 'For those interested in deepening their relationship with that most mysterious of texts - the Song of Songs - this volume will come as a delight and a joy.' Dr Peter Tyler, St Mary's University, London. 'Invites us to express Christianity once more in the language of Love.' Adrian Newman, Bishop of Stepney. 'Graeme Watson offers us a treasury of reflection . . .' Jonathan Clark, Bishop of Croydon

Book Born for Restoration

Download or read book Born for Restoration written by AviGayle O'Hare and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born for Restoration is about my life. "Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you, and before you came out of the womb I set you apart" (Jeremiah 1:5, ISR). Psalm 23 is a song sung about a life starting and experiencing the tests of discovering our purpose and who is with us as we go through the birth canal until eternity. 1. I am convinced that even before I was in my mother's womb the Lord was my Shepherd; with Him I never experienced lack. 2. He instructed me in the comfort of the womb to lie down in green pastures as He spoke to me throughout my journey. I was guided beside still waters parting the way into this world. The river of life spoke through the Lord as a Spirit of comfort and calm embraced me. 3. Leaving the comfort of mercy (Heb: Rachem=womb) when I entered the world and made wrong choices the Lord turns back my being; He leads me on the cycles of righteousness. This was the beginning of my restoration birth. I was told this journey is not just about you, but you are a voice telling people who I am. I learned His name, and this was one of the most important aspects of this message. 4. As I ran my race then walked through the valley of the shadow of death, I did not fear because He told me I did not give you a spirit of fear. I gave you a spirit of love and power through my Spirit and a steadfast mind toward Me. I Am with you. The Lord disciplined me when I needed it, and that was a comfort because He was all about preserving my life as any good Father desires. 5. I recognized the tables as the tablets He set before me in the presence of my enemies. These commandments were needed, so I looked at them and not the faces of my enemies. As time continues, this journey with the Lord of Restoration sets me apart by anointing my mind and my life overflowing with a desire to listen and obey His Word and influence others to consider this journey of restoration. 6. As a result of repentance, only goodness and loving commitment follows me. And now I know my journey is to dwell in the house of the Lord to the length of days!

Book excerpt: "Precisely Literal, Richly Revealing" Pairing the most literal English translation available with an illuminating in-text exposition of each verse in the Bible, this outstanding resource will helps strengthen your grasp on God's Word. By comparing the precise NASB with the magnified sentence structure of the Amplified Bible, readers are better able to appreciate the meaning of the scriptures as understood by their audience in the original languages. Known for its word-for-word literal accuracy, the New American Standard Bible, updated edition, is the #1 choice for in-depth inductive Bible study. And through its unique use of synonyms and definitions, the Amplified Bible both explains and expands the meaning of words in the text by placing amplification in parentheses and brackets after key words or phrases. Through multiple expressions, greater emphasis is given to the divine message as reflected in the original Greek and Hebrew. Now readers can benefit from both translation approaches with this side-by-side comparison that offers a more enriching experience with God's Word. NASB 12--For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13--But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. AMPLIFED BIBLE 12--For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection of realitys in a riddle or enigma], but then when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to face Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood by God]. 13--And so faith, hope, love abide faith--conviction and belief respecting man's relation to God and divine things; hope--joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love--true affection for God and man, growing out of God's love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love.
