Book Resource considerations for investing in hand hygiene improvement in health care facilities

Download or read book Resource considerations for investing in hand hygiene improvement in health care facilities written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment in all the drivers and facilitators of hand hygiene action in health care to ensure that it occurs at the point of care and other critical moments requires a multidisciplinary, multifaceted approach. WHO describes such an approach as a “multimodal improvement strategy” (MMIS) which is at the core of its implementation models for hand hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC) programmes. The focus of this document is on the resource considerations for investing in hand hygiene improvement in health care (primary, secondary and tertiary) using the MMIS approach. It presents the inputs (such as equipment, supplies and activities) required to: - estimate the investments needed to implement and sustain a comprehensive hand hygiene programme based on the MMIS; and - support health workers to perform hand hygiene at the point of care and at other important times for safe, high-quality care.

Book WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care

Download or read book WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care provide health-care workers (HCWs), hospital administrators and health authorities with a thorough review of evidence on hand hygiene in health care and specific recommendations to improve practices and reduce transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to patients and HCWs. The present Guidelines are intended to be implemented in any situation in which health care is delivered either to a patient or to a specific group in a population. Therefore, this concept applies to all settings where health care is permanently or occasionally performed, such as home care by birth attendants. Definitions of health-care settings are proposed in Appendix 1. These Guidelines and the associated WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy and an Implementation Toolkit (http://www.who.int/gpsc/en/) are designed to offer health-care facilities in Member States a conceptual framework and practical tools for the application of recommendations in practice at the bedside. While ensuring consistency with the Guidelines recommendations, individual adaptation according to local regulations, settings, needs, and resources is desirable. This extensive review includes in one document sufficient technical information to support training materials and help plan implementation strategies. The document comprises six parts.

Book Improving Hand Hygiene Compliance by Healthcare Workers

Download or read book Improving Hand Hygiene Compliance by Healthcare Workers written by Patrick Kimuyu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: 1, Egerton University (Public Health), course: Infection Control, language: English, abstract: Hand hygiene has emerged as the only single strategy that has the potential for reducing hospital-acquired infections. Evidence indicates that hospital-acquired infections pose an immense hazard for patients within the hospital environment, and healthcare workers, including nurses are involved in the transmission of these infections. This explains why health organizations such as WHO, The Joint Commission and Centers for Disease Control have embarked on spearheading education and awareness on hand hygiene. Despite these efforts, evidence indicates that healthcare workers continue to exhibit low levels of hand hygiene compliance. Therefore, this essay will demonstrate how nurses can assume a leadership role within the hospital settings in accordance with the health safety standards (National Safety and Quality Health Services) as outlined by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care [ACSQHC]. It will be discussed how nurses can adopt hand hygiene strategies to improve compliance to the national hand hygiene initiative in the wards as one of the key approaches for preventing and controlling hospital-acquired infections.

Book Effectiveness of Hand Washing Among Healthcare Workers to Reduce Hospital acquired Infections

Download or read book Effectiveness of Hand Washing Among Healthcare Workers to Reduce Hospital acquired Infections written by Trisha Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor compliance to good handwashing practices is a worldwide public health problem. Most patient-to-patient bacteria is transmitted through the contaminated hand of health care workers. Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) cause more than 98,000 deaths annually in the United States, according to Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. (HAIs) are avoidable and can be prevented with proper hand hygiene compliance. Hospitals and health facilities have focused greater attention on hand hygiene in the last few years because of growing concern about HAIs. Staff education is a key element of the implementation of an effective hand hygiene improvement program. Improvements in hand hygiene practices have a clearly demonstrable positive impact on nosocomial infection rates.

Book Hand Hygiene a Fundamental Component in Infection Prevention and Control

Download or read book Hand Hygiene a Fundamental Component in Infection Prevention and Control written by Ijeoma Madu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthcare associated infections are preventable infections acquired in healthcare facilities by patients during the course of hospitalization and within 30days of their discharge. It is a serious practice problem that leads to prolonged hospital stay, costing the healthcare system billions in dollars yearly (Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, 2014).These infections lead to increase in morbidity and mortality, jeopardizing the safety and quality of care of patients. Hand hygiene is recognizes as a simple and effective way of combating these infections which continues to rise because of low compliances among healthcare workers. Infection control In-addition to healthcare associated infection prevention continues to be an ongoing global issue despite initiatives and strategies to reduce its burden. The practices of Healthcare workers are still reported as falling short of a standard making it possible for these infections to persist. (Jackson, Lawton, and Griffiths, 2014). Multimodal strategies, which also addresses identified compliance barriers by healthcare worker is recognized by research as the key to increasing compliance and sustainability of hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers (Kowitt, Jefferson, and Mermel, 2013). This paper will be discussing the implementation plan of this initiative, starting with the author's organization. It includes, the formation of an infection committee comprising of champion representative, who will work together to help execute the plan. Obtaining of approval from relevant stakeholders, face to face meetings with the executive and leadership team and all relevant stake holders, the use of educational materials such as handouts, posters, pocket leaflet, Power Point presentations and videos showing clips of proper hand hygiene practices to create awareness and provide education to staff. Cost of needed resources and the evaluation of outcome.

Book Infection prevention and control in service education and training curriculum

Download or read book Infection prevention and control in service education and training curriculum written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this curriculum is to equip health and care workers with the essential knowledge and competencies necessary for delivering safe and effective care. By doing so it aims to significantly reduce HAIs and combat antimicrobial resistance, thereby safeguarding both patient and HCWs well-being. This curriculum is developed to meet the needs of IPC professionals responsible for developing learning resources and overseeing training within health care organizations. Moreover, the curriculum is intended to encompass all individuals involved in health care delivery and support. This holistic approach includes a wide range of staff -ranging from clinical workers to administrative and auxiliary services, thus ensuring a broad and inclusive approach to IPC training. The guide is designed to be flexible, allowing for adaptation to various educational and practical contexts to meet specific national and local IPC requirements and policies. It delineates three distinct competency levels within the curriculum: • foundational: introduces basic IPC principles applicable universally across all health and care worker roles; • intermediate: delivers more detailed IPC practices, particularly for clinical practitioners in direct contact with patients; • advanced: provides specialized IPC knowledge tailored for clinical specialists and managerial roles, reflecting the specific needs of their positions and settings. This curriculum serves as an essential reference tool to support the planning, development, and localization of IPC education materials, aligning closely with the WHO core components for IPC programmes and the directions provided within the WHO global strategy and action plan on IPC. It supports countries in their efforts to implement actions to improve IPC knowledge and skills among health and care workers according to the recommendations in the WHO global action plan and monitoring framework. By enhancing the IPC competencies of health and care workers, this guide supports the capacity of the health care system to effectively manage and prevent infections, which is particularly crucial in improving patient outcomes and promoting safer health care environments, including in the context of epidemics, pandemics and other public health emergencies.
