Book Natural Resources In U S Canadian Relations Volume 1

Download or read book Natural Resources In U S Canadian Relations Volume 1 written by Carl E. Beigie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined efforts of the World Peace Foundation, the C. D. Howe Research Institute, and the Centre Québécois de Relations Internationales have culminated in a comprehensive three-volume study of critical U.S.-Canadian resource issues. Motivated initially by the tensions of the mid-1970s and by U.S. concern about the actions of its major non-energy resource supplier, Canada, the study grew to examine bilateral resource issues from a long-term perspective. The first volume traces the background of the U.S.-Canadian resource connection, analyzes the evolution of resource policies and processes in the two countries, and introduces the domestic and bilateral policy issues that have emerged regarding natural resource development and trade. Contributors examine the possibility that Canada might seek to exploit its resource position by taking actions detrimental to U.S. interests. Volume II, Patterns and Trends in Resource Supplies and Policies, presents detailed case studies of nine specific resources of interest to both countries. Volume III, Perspectives, Prospects, and Policy Options, examines the resource sector from the perspectives of corporate investors, workers, and environmentalists and concludes with a review of policy options and prospects for the bilateral relationship.

Book The Theory Practice and Potential of Regional Development

Download or read book The Theory Practice and Potential of Regional Development written by Kelly Vodden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian regional development today involves multiple actors operating within nested scales from local to national and even international levels. Recent approaches to making sense of this complexity have drawn on concepts such as multi-level governance, relational assets, integration, innovation, and learning regions. These new regionalist concepts have become increasingly global in their formation and application, yet there has been little critical analysis of Canadian regional development policies and programs or the theories and concepts upon which many contemporary regional development strategies are implicitly based. This volume offers the results of five years of cutting-edge empirical and theoretical analysis of changes in Canadian regional development and the potential of new approaches for improving the well-being of Canadian communities and regions, with an emphasis on rural regions. It situates the Canadian approach within comparative experiences and debates, offering the opportunity for broader lessons to be learnt. This book will be of interest to policy-makers and practitioners across Canada, and in other jurisdictions where lessons from the Canadian experience may be applicable. At the same time, the volume contributes to and updates regional development theories and concepts that are taught in our universities and colleges, and upon which future research and analysis will build.

Book The Economic Development of Canada

Download or read book The Economic Development of Canada written by Richard Pomfret and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to and interpretation of the development of the Canadian economy since European settlement. The main contrast between the book’s view and previous interpretations of Canada’s economic past is that, instead of emphasizing the continuity of Canadian economic development (with staple exports playing the leading role), the focus is on the transition from the sparsely populated colonial economy of the early nineteenth century to the modern economy ranking among the seven largest market economies whose leaders now meet for economic summits.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite its importance to the Canadian economy and future prosperity, the oil and gas industry has been facing increased scrutiny from various domestic and international groups. To expand the information available to Canadians, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources (hereafter 'the Committee') undertook a study to examine the cross-country benefits of developing Canada's oil and gas resources, and seek direct evidence of how the oil and gas industry contributes to the well-being of Canadians. ... Throughout the study, witnesses urged the government to strongly support further development of Canada's oil and gas resources, and agreed that timely access to new export markets is crucial for Canada's continued growth and its ability to compete with other countries. ... Finally, the Committee heard that the federal government has modernized its regulatory system, with the aim of developing natural resources projects in a timely way, and that it is implementing a world-class safety regime to show Canadians and the world that Canada can do so, all the while maintaining the highest environmental and public safety standards"--
