Book Resonance Electronic Raman Scattering in Rare Earth Crystals

Download or read book Resonance Electronic Raman Scattering in Rare Earth Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intensities of Raman scattering transitions between electronic energy levels of trivalent rare earth ions doped into transparent crystals were measured and compared to theory. A particle emphasis was placed on the examination of the effect of intermediate state resonances on the Raman scattering intensities. Two specific systems were studied: Ce/sup 3 +/(4f1) in single crystals of LuPO4 and Er/sup 3 +/(4f11) in single crystals of ErPO4. 134 refs., 92 figs., 33 tabs.

Book Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions

Download or read book Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions written by A.A. Kaplyanskii and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions'' contains chapters on some key problems selected from a broad range of spectroscopic studies of RE-activated solids including both crystalline and glassy materials. Progress in crystal field theory is surveyed, an area which is basic to our understanding of the energy levels. The treatment of dynamical properties includes studies of coherence phenomena in isolated ions, energy transfer between ions and co-operative phenomena associated with ion-ion and ion-lattice interactions. In addition, the role of electron spins and nuclear spins is studied by light scattering and double resonance techniques. The presence of inhomogeneous broadening of spectral lines is observed and studied in many contexts, leading to new insights into general problems of the disordered state. Considerable attention is devoted to describing new experimental techniques whose development is of prime importance for progress in the spectroscopy of RE-activated solids. Many of these rely on the development and application of tunable lasers. At the moment this is a very active field of spectroscopy with more exciting developments likely to occur in the future.

Book Electronic Raman Scattering Theory in Rare Earth Garnets

Download or read book Electronic Raman Scattering Theory in Rare Earth Garnets written by Joan L. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work involves the calculation of the relative Raman scattering intensities of low-lying electronic transitions in rare earth garnets. An evaluation is made as to the usefulness of such calculations in testing the crystal field wavefunctions of rare earth garnets. The garnets studied are paramagnetic YbGaG, YbAlG, DyGaG, and DyAlG, DyAlG is also studied at temperatures below its ordering temperature (T sub N = 2.5 degrees K) and with an applied magnetic field. In order to obtain crystal field wavefunctions necessary for the relative Raman intensity calculations, crystal field analysis are done in this work for DyGaG and DyAlG. For YbGaG and YbAlG the wavefunctions of Pearson (1971) are used in the intensity calculations. Simple expressions of the relative scattering intensities are derived for the paramagnetic and the antiferromagnetic cases. Such expressions are obtained for several different combinations of the polarizations of the incident and scattered light. (Author).

Book Laser Raman Scattering Studies of Crystals

Download or read book Laser Raman Scattering Studies of Crystals written by Herman Z. Cummins and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser excited Raman scattering has been explored as a technique for studying crystals containing impurities, particularly the rare-earth doped crystals widely used as laser materials. Spectra obtained with both an A(+)4880 A laser and a He-Ne 6328 A laser are given for CaF2 and CaWO4 crystals, both pure and doped with various rare earths. To date, the doped crystals studied have either produced strong fluorescence or else given spectra which are indistinguishable from those of the pure crystals. Modification of the instrumentation is discussed which is currently in progress. With the improved apparatus, further efforts are planned to look for electronic Raman structure of the rare earth ions as well as modification of the vibrational Raman structure due to perturbation of the lattice by the impurities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coverage For some time, we have contemplated a comprehensive review of the structures and force fields of the binary fluorides. This bibliography of 1498 references marks the first step of that effort. We are pub lishing this material now rather than waiting until the review is complete some two years hence because we believe that the information already accumulated will be of immediate use to a broad spectrum of researchers. Anyone ambitious enough to read through all the articles on binary fluorides will find that the struc tures and force fields of many of these molecules are at present unknown. For example, it has not been clearly established to which point group(s) the lanthanide trifluorides should be assigned. There remain interesting problems relating to the role of Jahn-Teller and pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortions in some of the transition metal fluorides such as VF , MoF , ReF , and ReF , to name only a few. One s s 6 7 also finds fascinating examples of large-amplitude motions, or pseudorotations, as they are often called, in such molecules as XeF 6, I F 7, and PF 5' For those binary fluorides whose equilibrium geometries are precisely known, there still exists the problem of accurately determining the harmonic force field. In a few cases, most notably the Group VA trifluorides, there has been some attempt made at extracting the cubic and quartic contributions to the force field.

Book Metals Superconductors Magnetic Materials Liquids Disordered Solids Optical Properties

Download or read book Metals Superconductors Magnetic Materials Liquids Disordered Solids Optical Properties written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamical Properties of Solids, Volume 4: Disordered Solids, Optical Properties focuses on the lattice dynamical properties of noncrystalline and disordered solids and optical properties of crystalline solids. The selection first elaborates on the vibrational properties of amorphous solids and computer experiments and disordered solids. Topics include thermal and electrical transport, density of states, numerical methods, localization, low frequency modes, and theoretical background. The text then takes a look at the morphic effects in lattice dynamics, including normal coordinate formalism, electric-field-induced infrared absorption and Raman scattering, stress-induced changes in the phonon frequencies, and the effect of time reversal on the symmetry of the long-wavelength optical. The manuscript examines the absorption of infrared radiation by multiphonon processes in solids, as well as theoretical studies of infrared absorption in the multiphonon region and experimental studies of infrared absorption at frequencies above the characteristic lattice vibration frequencies. The selection is a dependable source of data for researchers interested in the optical properties of crystalline solids and lattice dynamical properties of noncrystalline and disordered solids.
