Book excerpt: Abstract: This qualitative research examines the educational trajectories of 10 Latino male college students who were previously suspended and/or expelled in K-12 urban public schooling and where able to access higher education. Latino male students have encountered various forms of hyper criminalization across their academic journeys (specifically in K-12 urban public schooling) that shape and inform the way they perceive of these experiences and the racial and gendered biases they encounter as a result of their suspension and/or expulsion. Critical Race Theory and Latino Critical Theory are used as the overarching theoretical frameworks used to inform this study. This research also draws from the conceptual lens of Community Cultural Wealth and Transformational Resistance to understand how Latino males navigate their experiences with suspension and/or expulsion and how they respond to those experiences. This research explores how teachers, staff, and administrators in K-12 urban public schools view and respond to Latino student behavior.

Even as the number of Latinas/os attending college has actually increased steadily over the last few decades, the proportional representation of Latino males continues to slide relative to their Latina female counterparts. The question of why Latino males are losing ground in accessing higher education—relative to their peers—is an important and complex one, and it lies at the heart of this book. There are several broad themes highlighted, catalogued along with the four dimensions of policy, theory, research, and practice. The contributors to this book present new research on factors that inhibit or promote Latino success in both four-year institutions and community colleges in order to inform both policy and practice. They explore the social-cultural factors, peer dynamics, and labor force demands that may be perpetuating the growing gender gap, and consider what lessons can be learned from research on the success of Latinas. This book also closely examines key practices that enable first generation Latino male undergraduates to succeed which may seem counterintuitive to institutional expectations and preconceived notions of student behavior. Using narrative data, the book also explores the role of family in persistence; outlines how Latino men conceptualize fulfilling expectations, negotiate the emasculization of the educational process, and how they confront racialization in the pursuit of a higher education; uncovers attitudes to help-seeking that are detrimental to their success: and analyzes how those who succeed and progress in college apply their social capital – whether aspirational, navigational, social, linguistic, familial, or resistant.While uncovering the lack of awareness at all levels of our colleges and universities about the depth and severity of the challenges facing Latino males, this book provides the foundation for rethinking policy; challenges leaders to institutionalize male-focused programs and services; and presents data to inform needed changes in practice for outreach and retention.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of assimilation and cultural resistance in the lives of fifth grade Latino males. The study provides insights on cultural assimilation and cultural resistance for parents and pedagogues who are interested in defining and establishing educational democracy in our schools. Parents and the teachers were interviewed rather than the students directly providing different social perspectives. This approach provided validation of the response patterns, and an instrument to assess points of conflict between teachers and parents. The study examined the following research questions: (1) What are the forces of cultural assimilation that are faced by immigrant Latino families as they make decisions about the social integration of their children? (2) What are the perceived student social resistance behaviors and their consequences as they negotiate their social integration in the school context? This study used a qualitative approach, specifically structured interview techniques and critical incidents to identify behaviors that demonstrated current assimilation levels and, cultural response patterns of the students. In addition, parental and teacher perceptions of forces of social resistance, and their related consequences were identified. The findings of the study suggests that the forces of cultural assimilation faced by immigrant Latino students were such that none of the subjects had attained a high level of cultural assimilation by the fifth grade. A number of the subjects in this study were identified by both teachers and parents as exhibiting acts of cultural resistance. The study also suggests that factors such as current cultural assimilation levels, and cultural response patterns are contributing factors in the intensity and frequency of resistant behavior. The study identifies points of friction between parents and teachers. There was a high range of disagreement between some of the pairs of observers in all four themes: (1) cultural response patterns, (2) assimilation levels, (3) acts of resistance, and (4) consequences. Resistant behaviors should not be ignored. If children are silent, withdrawn, or aggressive in class, teachers and parents ought to be concerned. They must be sensitive to cultural resistance in order to minimize its impact before inappropriate behavior is manifested.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Latino males from an English Language Learner (ELL) background are not successfully graduating from high school and going to college. This study seeks to understand this phenomenon through narratives of young Latino males in the Los Angeles area. Guided by Yosso's theory community cultural wealth theory, this qualitative study examines the challenges experienced by Latino males in their high school English Language Learner programs, and how these challenges were met. community cultural wealth theory provides six tenets of capital that communities of color possess: aspirational, familial, linguistic, social, navigational, and resistance. These types of cultural wealth exist in the lives of students and can assist students in attaining successful educational outcomes. Interviews with 16 Latino male ELLs between the ages of 18 to 25 were conducted over a 2-month period. The 16 Latino male ELLs were divided into groupings of high school graduates in college, high school graduates, high school students finishing their diploma requirements, and high school dropouts. Along with these interviews, four parent interviews were also conducted in order to gain a holistic perspective of the Latino males' experiences. Latino male ELLs illustrated the utilization of multiple forms of community cultural capital in their narratives; forms of social, linguistic, and navigational capital made a difference in Latino male ELLs that reported not only finishing high school, but also attending college. Conclusions of the study will be used to make recommendations for improvements in counseling services, assisting newly arrived ELLs to high school, and specific changes to policy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to acquire information that informs school leaders' efforts to improve learning results for Latino male students. Too few Latino males finish high school and continue on to higher education. High dropout rates and suspension rates and low indicators of academic success are prevalent among Latino males in U.S. schools. In contrast, in a few high schools Latino males achieve high graduation rates and levels of academic success that prepare them for post-secondary opportunities. This case study examined one school where Latino males consistently achieve impressive results. In particular, the study examined the role leaders played in influencing the development and maintenance of systems that resulted in strong learning outcomes for all students, and particularly Latino male students. Although state and federal accountability provisions require leaders to attend to learning outcomes for Latino students, school leaders may not always know how to pursue quality learning outcomes for Latino students, and particularly Latino males. The study highlights how school principals can lead teachers, support personnel, students, and parents in deliberate efforts that result in higher rates of learning, high school graduation, and college attendance for Latino male students.
