Book The Hidden Costs of Reward

Download or read book The Hidden Costs of Reward written by Mark R. Lepper and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, this volume provided a broad survey of the latest research and theory, at the time, concerning the potential detrimental effects of inappropriate uses of tangible rewards to modify behaviour. Overall, this research questions the dominant paradigm within which reinforcers, by definition, have positive effects on performance and subsequent behaviour, and suggests new directions for the study of human motivation. In a series of five original integrative essays, the contributors summarize their own and related research programmes. These theoretical essays are complemented by two introductory chapters, that provide a historical context for this research, and four discussion chapters, that speak to broader issues, including both the implications and limitations of the research presented. At the time, this was the latest information on a most provocative area.

Book Social Cognition and Social Development

Download or read book Social Cognition and Social Development written by E. Tory Higgins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-07-26 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In psychology there has been an explosion of interest in what has come to be called social cognition. How do people categorise and conceptualise social situations, obligations and relationships? And what are the implications of their categorisations and conceptualisations for behaviour? Developmental and social psychologists are currently converging on the developmental roots of social cognitive abilities. This timely 1983 book offers a useful overview of research and theory concerning social cognition and social behaviour in children at the time of this book's publication. A full range of theoretical approaches is represented, key problems are systematically reviewed, and research programmes and perspectives of leading psychologists in the field are summarised.

Book Schedules of Reinforcement

Download or read book Schedules of Reinforcement written by B. F. Skinner and published by B. F. Skinner Foundation. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contingent relationship between actions and their consequences lies at the heart of Skinner’s experimental analysis of behavior. Particular patterns of behavior emerge depending upon the contingencies established. Ferster and Skinner examined the effects of different schedules of reinforcement on behavior. An extraordinary work, Schedules of Reinforcement represents over 70,000 hours of research primarily with pigeons, though the principles have now been experimentally verified with many species including human beings. At first glance, the book appears to be an atlas of schedules. And so it is, the most exhaustive in existence. But it is also a reminder of the power of describing and explaining behavior through an analysis of measurable and manipulative behavior-environment relations without appealing to physiological mechanisms in the brain. As en exemplar and source for the further study of behavioral phenomena, the book illustrates the scientific philosophy that Skinner and Ferster adopted: that a science is best built from the ground up, from a firm foundation of facts that can eventually be summarized as scientific laws.

Download or read book Learning in Children written by J. Bisanz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time now, the study of cognitive development has been far and away the most active discipline within developmental psychology. Although there would be much disagreement as to the exact proportion of papers published in develop mental journals that could be considered cognitive, 50% seems like a conservative estimate. Hence, a series of scholarly books devoted to work in cognitive devel opment is especially appropriate at this time. The Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by several authors, and original volumes written by one author or a small group of authors. The flagship for the Springer Series is a serial publication of the "advances" type, carrying the subtitle Progress in Cognitive Development Research. Each volume in the Progress sequence is strongly thematic, in that it is limited to some well-defined domain of cognitive developmental research (e.g., logical and mathematical development, development of learning). All Progress volumes will be edited collections. Editors of such collections, upon consultation with the Series Editor, may elect to have their books published either as contributions to the Progress sequence or as separate volumes. All books written by one author or a small group of authors are being published as separate volumes within the series.

Book Handbook of Treatment Approaches in Childhood Psychopathology

Download or read book Handbook of Treatment Approaches in Childhood Psychopathology written by Johnny L. Matson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment of psychopathology in children has been a centerpiece of the overall field of problem behaviors in children. Therefore, a considerable number of data have been accumulated, particularly in recent years. These efforts have expanded at such a rate as to result in the publication of several new journals, such as the Journal of Clinical Child Psychology and Education and Treatment of Children. Similarly, many standard general clinical journals have begun to de vote more attention to children. Despite these efforts, few books have emerged that are devoted directly and specifically to treatment in childhood psychopath ology. This volume's scope is broad in that it reviews not only behavior therapy, but also the rapidly expanding efforts in psychopathology and traditional psy chotherapy, and at an advanced level. It is designed to provide an in-depth scholarly review of the empirical evidence, including an overview and analysis of the available techniques, their effectiveness, and the limitations and complica tions arising from the use of these treatment methods with the full range of psychopathology displayed by children. Many nationally and internationally recognized experts have agreed to contribute chapters to this book, and we hope that what has emerged is an up-to-date and authoritative volume.
