Book Residential Geothermal Systems

Download or read book Residential Geothermal Systems written by John Stojanowski and published by Pangea Publications LLC. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW EXPANDED EDITION with color illustrations and spacious 8.5 x 8.5 format adds detailed descriptions of the components of the heat pump, open loops systems and important decisions that the homeowner must make. Interest in residential geothermal systems has grown as more people realize they can replace their fossil-fuel heating system with one that is three to five times more efficient and doesn't require a chimney to exhaust noxious fumes. Currently in the USA there is a federal 30% tax credit that applies to the total installation cost. These newer, safer systems provide heating as well as cooling simply by transferring heat between the home and the ground or a nearby body of water. Since this is a relatively new technology, the number of experienced installers is limited, but growing. Therefore, there is a burden on homeowners interested in installing one of these systems to absorb as much information about residential geothermal systems as possible. This book was written specifically to meet that need as well as to help HVAC professionals who are new to residential geothermal systems. Readers will learn how heat pumps are able to extract heat from relatively low temperature water circulating in ground loops and raise it to a temperature high enough to heat a home. They will also learn how to estimate the size of the heat pump required and the ground loop size as well for straight 2-pipe, 4-pipe, 6-pipe and Slinky loop configurations. This is important in order to verify that the installer correctly sizes the system. An incorrectly sized system will result in an unhappy homeowner. Both horizontal and vertical loop systems, for GX and DX, are covered. Some of the technical issues that are addressed include: Loop water flow rates and Reynolds Number, heat of extraction/rejection, heating capacity, desuperheater setup, open-loop/closed-loop, SCW, pond loops, DX, Manual-J, COP. The final chapter consists of a set of flowcharts guiding the homeowner to ask the pertinent questions needed for a successful installation.

Book Geothermal Heating and Cooling

Download or read book Geothermal Heating and Cooling written by Stephen P. Kavanaugh and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geothermal Heating and Cooling is a complete revision of Ground-Source Heat Pumps: Design of Geothermal Systems for Commercial and Institutional Buildings, which is recognized as the primary reference for nonresidential ground-source heat pump (GSHP) installations. This new work takes advantage of the many lessons learned since the time of the original publication, when GSHPs were primarily residential applications. Many improvements have evolved, and performance data, both positive and negative, is now available to guide the development of best practices. This essential guide for HVAC design engineers, design-build contractors, GSHP subcontractors, and energy/construction managers also provides building owners and architects with insights into characteristics of quality engineering firms and the information that should be provided by design firms competing for GSHP projects. This revision draws on new ASHRAE and industry research in critical areas, as well as measured data from long-term installations and optimized installation practices used by high-production GSHP contractors. Nearly all chapters and appendices were completely rewritten, and they include coverage of closed-loop ground (ground-coupled), groundwater, and surface-water systems plus GSHP equipment and piping. Additional information on site characterization has been added, including a new hydrogeological chapter. Another new chapter contains results of recent field studies, energy and demand characteristics, and updated information to optimize GSHP system cost. While other publications deal primarily with ground-coupled heat pumps, this text includes detailed coverage of groundwater, surface-water, and GSHP costs.Tables, graphs, and equations are provided in both Inch-Pound (I-P) and International System (SI) units. As a bonus, supplemental Microsoft® Excel® macro-enabled spreadsheets for a variety of GSHP calculations accompany the text.

Book Renewable HVAC Solutions Harnessing Solar Wind and Geothermal Energy

Download or read book Renewable HVAC Solutions Harnessing Solar Wind and Geothermal Energy written by Charles Nehme and published by Charles Nehme. This book was released on with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is undergoing a significant shift toward sustainability and energy efficiency, with increasing awareness of the environmental challenges posed by traditional energy sources. Among the most energy-intensive systems in homes, businesses, and industrial settings are Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. These systems account for a substantial portion of global energy consumption and are often powered by fossil fuels, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. As the demand for energy continues to grow, so does the need for more sustainable and renewable solutions. Renewable energy, particularly solar, wind, and geothermal, presents a viable alternative to traditional power sources for HVAC systems. These natural energy sources offer a cleaner, more sustainable way to heat and cool buildings, reducing both energy costs and the carbon footprint of HVAC operations. The Importance of Renewable HVAC Systems HVAC systems are essential for maintaining indoor comfort, but their energy requirements can be immense, especially in extreme climates. Traditional systems rely heavily on electricity generated from non-renewable sources, leading to significant environmental impact. Transitioning to renewable HVAC solutions not only addresses environmental concerns but also offers long-term economic benefits. Renewable energy HVAC systems are designed to harness the power of the sun, wind, and the Earth itself to provide heating, cooling, and ventilation. These systems not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also help stabilize energy costs in the long run. With advances in technology, renewable HVAC systems have become more efficient, reliable, and affordable, making them a practical option for a wide range of applications—from residential homes to large commercial facilities.
