Book Reservoir Fisheries of India

Download or read book Reservoir Fisheries of India written by V.V. Sugnnan and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publiation reviews the existing literature on limnology and fisheries of indian reservoirs, covering more than 100 reservoirs in various parts of the country. The fisheries resources and their utilization are discussed separately for each state, with additional information on water quality, biotic communities, modes of exploitation, craft and gear and fisheries management practices, including the selection of species for stocking, rate and the introduction of exotic species. Indian reservoirs have been stocked with indo-Gangetic carp for many decades, and the impact of this stocking on fish production and the indigenous faunistic diversity has been assessed. An effort has been made to gauge the such as meteorlogical, morphometric and hydroedaphic features on the production dynamics of reservoirs in different geoclimatic regions. An attempt has also been made to resolve anomalies of classification and nomenclature to the extent possible. Factors responsible for the slow rate of fisheries development have been identified. Book Management Systems for Riverine Fisheries

Download or read book Management Systems for Riverine Fisheries written by Thayer Scudder and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1985 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is concerned specifically with the problems of river fisheries and associated management issues. It deals in particular with the scope for building on traditional practices, through the participation of traditional fishing communities, as a means of improving the quality of river fishery management. The paper reviews the most frequently encountered problems of riverine fisheries such as over-fishing due to population pressure or migration, and artifically induced environmental factors such as dams, pollution and deforestation. It lays stress on the importance of studying fishing communities, as well as strictly biological factors, and presents a four-stage analysis of the evolution of traditional riverine fisheries. Several undesirable consequences of this typical evolution, both on the resource itself and on traditional fishing communities, are identified and illustrated by case studies from the Amazon and the Zambesi. Certain types of traditional management strategies are examined and assessed for their future utility. The current ineffectiveness of many existing government river fisheries management policies is noted, either as a result of lack of resources or because they are inappropriate, often rooted in outdated colonial legislation. The lack of both limited access measures and of participation by local fishing communities are highlighted as major deficiencies. The paper concludes by linking these two features as crucial components of durable river management strategies for the future, although other possibilities for management are also reviewed and assessed. The paper contains a comprehensive bibliography for further reading.

Book Reservoir Fish Habitat Management

Download or read book Reservoir Fish Habitat Management written by L.E, Miranda and published by Lightning Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is organized into an introduction and 13 sections. Section 1 is based on a nationwide survey of reservoir habitats completed by the Reservoir Fisheries Habitat Partnership (RFHP). The RFHP canvassed agency professionals about various aspects of reservoir fish habitat degradation, and identified 12 comprehensive factors that captured most degradation. The sections developed in this document parallel these 12 factors to identify management practices that address the perceived degradation. Most sections are organized similarly: background information about the degradation factor is followed by a listing of alternative management practices. Deciding on appropriate management action can be complex because there are often several options for addressing degradation problems. Different options may have different cost, effectiveness, and consequences. A simplified decision model to choose among management options is suggested in section 12. Habitat management often goes far beyond the manpower available to agencies involved in reservoir habitat management, so suggestions on working with stakeholders are included in section 13. Ballpark costs of reservoir fish habitat management practices are given in the Appendix.

Book Reservoir Fisheries of India

Download or read book Reservoir Fisheries of India written by V. V. Sugunan and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing literature on limnology and fisheries of Indian reservoirs has been reviewed by covering more than 100 reservoirs located in various parts of the country. An assessment of environment-mediated production functions of reservoirs has been attempted. Since the ecosystem processes in reservoirs belonging to different geo-climatic regions exhibit wide variations depending on meteorological, morphometric and hydro-edaphic features of the impoundments, an effort has been made to gauge the influence of these abiotic variables on the production dynamics. Authentic information on water areas under different categories of reservoirs has been collected and interpreted in respect of all the Indian States. An attempt has also been made to resolve the anomalies pertaining to classification and nomenclature to the extent possible. Various fisheries management norms followed in the reservoirs of the country including the selection of species for stocking, stocking rate and introduction of exotic species have been reviewed. Indian reservoirs have been stocked with the Indo-Gangetic carps for many decades and the impact of this stocking has been assessed in terms of fish production and the indigenous faunistic diversity.

Book Management and Ecology of Lake and Reservoir Fisheries

Download or read book Management and Ecology of Lake and Reservoir Fisheries written by and published by . This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of reservoirs is progressively growing in all areas of the world. Rivers are being dammed, and the water level of natural lakes raised. The purpose of damming may consist of irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood control, public water supply, recreation, navigation and fisheries. Management practices for smoothing fluctuations in fish populations and increasing yield categorized into three groups - management of habitats; the regulation of fish populations and their food supply; and regulation and control of fisheries. To accomplish the management goals it is obligatory to know the changed patterns of fish populations in reservoirs such as the formation of fish population, fish population dynamics, the abundance of fish in the stocks and their biomass, and maximum yield which the reservoirs could sustain. This information is very important in planning a management program for ensuring maximum production of fishes. Fish yield optimization from man-made lakes has become the focus of attention in recent years and consequently, many development projects have been initiated at the State and national level to exploit the fish production potential of this resource, even as, the reservoir fisheries is well-poised for a steady growth. This edited book attempts to meet the long-felt need for comprehensive information on the Management and Ecology of Lake & Reservoir Fisheries. The chapters are contributed by international experts in fisheries management and ecology and assess the status of lake and reservoir fisheries, consideration of fisheries yields, trophic ecology, rehabilitation and conservation. The fish production in reservoirs has been investigated and studied and the reservoir fisheries resources and their utilization are dealt along with the water quality, biotic communities, craft and gear, and fisheries management practices.
