Book Researches on Ptolemy s Geography of Eastern Asia

Download or read book Researches on Ptolemy s Geography of Eastern Asia written by G. E. Gerini and published by . This book was released on 1974-01-01 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 3 Maps Description: The present work elucidates an ancient text and department of historical geography which will prove of some retrospective value for the study of historic, linguistic ethnologic and geographic aspects of the countries it deals with. Mindful, moreover of the maximum that geography is the eye of history and vice versa, as Carlyle has somewhere pointed out, that history should always go hand in hand with geography, not a few sidelights, often from hitherto unpublished and even unknown sources have been supplied to obscure periods of the countries treated, in so far as fell within the scope of the present work. Hence it is hoped that on this ground alone the study of the Ptolemaic Geography of Further India will become indispensable to orientalists. Though volume is mainly devoted to Further India and the Indo-Malay Archipelago, albeit the Tables cover a far wider field including China and Central Asia.

Book Henricus Martellus s World Map at Yale c 1491

Download or read book Henricus Martellus s World Map at Yale c 1491 written by Chet Van Duzer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents groundbreaking new research on a fifteenth-century world map by Henricus Martellus, c. 1491, now at Yale. The importance of the map had long been suspected, but it was essentially unstudiable because the texts on it had faded to illegibility. Multispectral imaging of the map, performed with NEH support in 2014, rendered its texts legible for the first time, leading to renewed study of the map by the author. This volume provides transcriptions, translations, and commentary on the Latin texts on the map, particularly their sources, as well as the place names in several regions. This leads to a demonstration of a very close relationship between the Martellus map and Martin Waldseemüller’s famous map of 1507. One of the most exciting discoveries on the map is in the hinterlands of southern Africa. The information there comes from African sources; the map is thus a unique and supremely important document regarding African cartography in the fifteenth century. This book is essential reading for digital humanitarians and historians of cartography.

Book Malay Kingship in Kedah

Download or read book Malay Kingship in Kedah written by Maziar Mozaffari Falarti and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book probes and examines traditional sources of royal power and control, as well as indigenous socio-political systems in the Malay world. It is focused on the north-western Malaysian Sultanate of Kedah which is acknowledged as the oldest unbroken independent kingship line in the 'Malay and Islamic world' with 1,000 years of history. Little scholarly attention has been paid to its pre-modern history, society, religion, system of government and unique geographic situation, potentially controlling both land and sea lines of communication into the remainder of Southeast Asia. It will thus provide the first comprehensive treatment in English, or other languages, on Kedah's pre-modern and nineteenth century historiography and can provide a foundation for comparative studies of the various Malay states which is presently lacking. The proposed book also sheds much needed light on a range of important topics in Malay history including: Kedah and the northern Melaka Straits history, colonial expansion and rivalry, Southeast Asian history and politics, interregional migration and the influence of the sea peoples or orang laut, traditional Malay socio-political and economic life, Islamic influences and the course of Thai-Malay relations. The book attempts to offer a new understanding, not only of Kedah, but of the political and cultural development of the entire Malay world and of its relationships with the broader forces in both its continental and maritime settings. It argues that Kedah does not seem to follow, and in fact, often seems to contradict what has been commonly been accepted as the "typical model" of the traditional Malay state. Thus it concludes that the ruling dynasty has historically exploited a wide range of unique environmental conditions, local traditions, global spiritual trends and economic forces to preserve and strengthen its political position.

Download or read book Roman Roads written by Anne Kolb and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to present the current state of research on Roman roads and their foundations in a combined historical and archaeological perspective. The focus is on the diverse local histories and the varying degrees of significance of individual roads and regional networks, which are treated here for the most important regions of the empire and beyond. The assembled contributions will be of interest to historians, archaeologists and epigraphers, since they tackle matters as diverse as the technical modalities of road-building, the choice of route, but also the functionality and the motives behind the creation of roads. Roman roads are further intimately related to various important aspects of Roman history, politics and culture. After all, such logistical arteries form the basis of all communication and exchange processes, enabling not only military conquest and security but also facilitating the creation of an organized state as well as trade, food supply and cultural exchange. The study of Roman roads must always be based on a combination of written and archaeological sources in order to take into account both their concrete geographical location and their respective spatial, cultural, and historical context.
