Excerpt: ...in the eastern parts of the continent, from Kaffirland to Nubia and Egypt. "Their complexion is nearly black; their women are reported to be handsome. When we asked them if they were accustomed to eat live flesh, they denied it, but spoke with pleasure of the luxury of opening the veins of a dromedary or a sheep, and drinking the warm blood." The author suggests the idea that a similar practice, prevalent among the ancient Hebrews, was the object of a prohibition in Deuteronomy, ch. xii. ver. 23. Strabon, lib. xvii. c. 1. Memoire sur les Blemjes, Quatremfere. M6m. sur l'Egypte. Ritter's Erdkunde. According to Macrizi, the Bishari and the Ababdeh occupy the country of the Bejas or Boujas, who were a powerful and numerous people in the middle ages, when they were at least partially converted to Christianity. The Bejas were a nomadic people, who were in possession of the gold, silver, and emerald mines of the Desert. Macrizi described the Bejas as living under tents of hair: he says, "their colour is darker than that of the Habesh: they have the manners of Arabs; they have no towns, no villages, no fields. Their provisions are carried to them from Egypt, and Habesh, and Nouba. They were formerly idolatrous, and then took the Islam. They are hospitable and charitable people; they are divided into tribes and branches, every one of which has its chief. They are pastors, and live entirely on flesh and milk." The Bishari and Ababdeh are descended, according to Ma-crizi, from the Bejas, intermixed with Arabs. The Bishari however, as well as the Ababdeh, appear from their general character and languages to be a genuine African race, and if there is any mixture of Arabian blood in their stock, it is probably in small proportion....

Book Hawaiian National Bibliography 1780 1900

Download or read book Hawaiian National Bibliography 1780 1900 written by David W. Forbes and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1999-02-01 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, annotated, multivolume bibliography is a record of all printed works touching on some aspect of the political, religious, cultural, or social history of the Hawaiian Islands-from the first printed notice mentioning the Islands (in a German periodical of January 1780) to the beginning of the twentieth century, when the Islands ceased to be a separate political entity. Volume I covers the period from 1780 to 1830, when exploratory voyages to the northern Pacific had largely concluded and the arrival of improved printing equipment in the Islands resulted in a substantial increase in the number of works printed by the Mission Press in Honolulu. In addition to books and pamphlets, the bibliography includes newspaper and periodical accounts and single sheet publications such as broadsides, circulars, playbills, and handbills because they often contain the only eyewitness or contemporary description of an important event or individual. Entries pertaining to Captain Cook's Third Voyage dominate the first twenty years of the bibliography. They reflect the profound impact of the voyage on both the Hawaiian culture and on nineteenth-century European thought. Extensive annotations provide a brief summary of approximately 760 published works in the first volume of the bibliography. All known editions of each work are listed, together with the exact title, date of publication, size of the volume, collation of pages, number and type of plates and maps, references, and location of copies. The bibliography will be invaluable to scholars, librarians, rare book sellers, and book collectors within the field of Hawaiiana.

Book Introduction to the Science of Language

Download or read book Introduction to the Science of Language written by A. H. Sayce and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1900, this is the second of two volumes of the magnum opus from pioneer assyriologist and linguist Rev. Archibald Sayce and continues directly from the first, providing an introduction to linguistic roots, inflectional families of speech, agglutinative, incorporating, polysynthetic and isolating languages, comparative mythology, the science of religion, the origin of language and the relation of language to ethnology, logic and education. In it, Sayce was the first to emphasize the principle of partial assimilation and the linguistic principle of analogy. This 4th edition, ten years after the first, reflected on the limitations of science revealed since 1890, in an era when languages, like other humanities subjects, still idealised scientific approaches. Archibald Henry Sayce was one of the greatest comparative linguists of the time, being proficient in Accadian, Arabic, Cuneiform, Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Hebrew, Hittite, Japanese, Latin, Persian, Phoenician, Sanscrit and Sumerian. He had a good knowledge of every Semitic and Indo-European language and could write good prose in at least twenty languages. Sayce's first major contribution to scholarship was a highly significant translation of an Accadian seal, a 'bilingual text' from which to translate cuneiform, similar to the Rosetta Stone. Here then, no doubt, the reader learns from a master of comparative linguistics.
