Download or read book Studies of Cave Sediments written by Ira D. Sasowsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John E. Mylroie and Ira D. Sasowsky' Caves occupy incongruous positions in both our culture and our science. The oldest records of modem human culture are the vivid cave paintings from southern France and northern Spain, which are in some cases more than 30,000 years old (Chauvet, et ai, 1996). Yet, to call someone a "caveman" is to declare them primitive and ignorant. Caves, being cryptic and mysterious, occupied important roles in many cultures. For example, Greece, a country with abundant karst, had the oracle at Delphi and Hades the god of death working from caves. People are both drawn to and mortified by caves. Written records ofcave exploration exist from as early as 852 BC (Shaw, 1992). In the decade of the 1920's, which was rich in news events, the second biggest story (as measured by column inches of newsprint) was the entrapment of Floyd Collins in Sand Cave, Kentucky, USA. This was surpassed only by Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic (Murray and Brucker, 1979).

Book Sediment Provenance Studies in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production

Download or read book Sediment Provenance Studies in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production written by R.A. Scott and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment provenance studies concern the origin, composition, transportation and deposition of detritus and therefore are an important part of understanding the links between basinal sedimentation, and hinterland tectonics and unroofing. Such studies can add value at many stages of hydrocarbon exploitation, from identifying regional-scale crustal affinities and sediment dispersal patterns during the earliest stages of exploration, to detailed correlation in producing reservoirs and understanding the impact of mineralogy on reservoir diagenesis. The volume showcases the wide variety of techniques available, using examples and applications from all aspects of sediment provenance research. The papers are organized into four sets around the following themes: • Overview: applications of provenance information in hydrocarbon reservoir sandstones • Provenance, diagenesis and reservoir quality • Provenance studies linking sediment to source • Looking forward: development of techniques and data handling This book is dedicated to the memory of Maria Mange and Robert A. Scott.

Book Sedimentation Engineering

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ata Amini
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2018-04-18
  • ISBN : 1789230020
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Sedimentation Engineering written by Ata Amini and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of knowledge about sedimentation processes taking place in a watershed or a waterbody hinders practical progress in addressing problem-solving. To assist the reader in putting sediment quantity and quality issues into perspective, sedimentation engineering features the most state-of-the-art contributions from a number of researchers working in the fields of water resources and soil erosion. The book contains 10 chapters selected among a great number of submitted manuscripts. The main topics are sedimentation processes in marshes, harbor estuaries, gulf, hydraulic turbine, and volcanic area. Sediment contamination and few other topics are included as well. The case studies cover a sequence for integrated solutions where watershed management and sedimentation engineering are not decoupled. This book on sedimentation engineering is designed for researchers and professionals and for course use in environmental science.

Book Continental Margin Sedimentation

Download or read book Continental Margin Sedimentation written by Charles A. Nittrouer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on continental margin sedimentation brings together an expert editorial and contributor team to create a state-of-the-art resource. Taking a global perspective, the book spans a range of timescales and content, ranging from how oceans transport particles, to how thick rock sequences are formed on continental margins. Summarizes and integrates our understanding of sedimentary processes and strata associated with fluvial dispersal systems on continental shelves and slopes Explores timescales ranging from particle transport at one extreme, to deep burial at the other Insights are presented for margins in general, and with focus on a tectonically active margin (northern California) and a passive margin (New Jersey), enabling detailed examination of the intricate relationships between a wide suite of sedimentary processes and their preserved stratigraphy Includes observational studies which document the processes and strata found on particular margins, in addition to numerical models and laboratory experimentation, which provide a quantitative basis for extrapolation in time and space of insights about continental-margin sedimentation Provides a research resource for scientists studying modern and ancient margins, and an educational text for advanced students in sedimentology and stratigraphy

Book Mathematical Theory of Sedimentation Analysis

Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Sedimentation Analysis written by Hiroshi Fujita and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Theory of Sedimentation Analysis deals with ultracentrifugal analysis. The book reviews flow equations for the ultracentrifuge, for two component systems, for multicomponent systems, and in chemically reacting systems. It explains the Svedberg equation and its extensions, and also the tests of the Onsager reciprocal relation. By employing a system consisting of two strong electrolytes and a solvent, the book illustrates that the sedimentation processes can be treated in terms of thermodynamics of irreversible processes. It also explains sedimentation-diffusion equilibrium and an approach to sedimentation equilibrium. It reviews the prediction of the time required to reach equilibrium, the estimates being made by Weaver (1926), and by Mason and Weaver (1924). The book employs sedimentation in a sector-shaped cell in a centrifugal field, of which the solutions of Mason and Weaver closely approximate the actual concentration distribution in the ultra-centrifuge cell. Other accurate solutions are by Fujita, Nazarian (1958), Yphantis, and Waugh. The book will prove valuable for mathematicians, physical chemists, biophysical chemists students, or professor of advanced mathematics.

Book Reservoir Sedimentation

Download or read book Reservoir Sedimentation written by Anton J. Schleiss and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the mechanisms of reservoir sedimentation being well known for a long time, sustainable and preventive measures are rarely taken into consideration in the design of new reservoirs. To avoid operational problems of powerhouses, sedimentation is often treated for existing reservoirs with measures which are efficient only for a limited time.Th
