Book New Directions in Lemur Studies

Download or read book New Directions in Lemur Studies written by International Primatological Society. Congress and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the past decade, there has been an enormous augmentation in the amount of information available on the lemurs of Madagascar. These advances are closely coupled with an increase in the number of national and international researchers working on these animals. As a result, Madagascar has emerged as one of the principal sites of primatological studies in the world. Furthermore, the conserva tion community has a massive interest in the preservation of the natural habitats of the island, and lemurs serve as one of the symbols of this cause. Between 10 and 14 August 1998, the XVIIth International Primatology Society (IPS) Congress was held in Antananarivo, Madagascar. For a country that about a decade ago was largely closed to foreign visitors, this Congress constituted a massive event for the Malagasy scientific community and was assisted by about 550 primatolo gists from 35 different countries. Naturally, given the venue and context of the Con gress, many of the presentations dealt with lemurs and covered a very wide breadth of subjects.

Book Research Partnerships for Common Concerns

Download or read book Research Partnerships for Common Concerns written by Daniel Maselli and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 1996 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " Agenda 21 indicates the work that research policy makers, funding organisations and researchers themselves need to do in order to achieve sustainable development in both North and South. Research on sustainability in the 21st century requires us to go beyond purely offer-driven research collaboration. Balanced partnerships and common agenda setting are of crucial importance. All attempts have to start where the Southern partners are and not when the North wants - or expects - them to be. However, a shift in the agenda setting is an issue which does not only concern the North. A fundamental change in prevailing attitudes is also needed in the South: governments have to set priorities at the policy level and to create appropriate frameworks which allow for the development of a self-confident research system. Daniel Maselli is Executive Secretary of the Swiss Commission for Research Partnership with Developing Countries (KFPE). Beat Scottas is a Research Coordinator and Lecturer at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Berne. "

Book Research and Evaluation for Educational Development

Download or read book Research and Evaluation for Educational Development written by Michael Crossley and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2005-05-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a reflective and historically situated analysis of the Kenyan Primary School Management Project (PRISM). This is carried out in the light of a broader international review of the theoretical and methodological literature relating to the role, and potential, of research and evaluation in the process of educational development. The case study of PRISM pays particular attention to the part played by collaborative and participatory research and evaluation in project development and implementation. The book is designed to be read on two main levels. Firstly, it provides a detailed, critical and empirically informed record of the Kenyan PRISM initiative. Secondly, the broader analysis explores implications for changing modalities of international development co-operation; for research and evaluation capacity building; for methodological and theoretical dimensions of development processes; and for the importance of comparative insights in understanding the processes and dilemmas of the international transfer of theories, policies and practices.

Book Knowledge for Justice

Download or read book Knowledge for Justice written by Tor Halvorsen and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, the purpose of development is being redefined in both social and environmental terms. Despite pushback from conservative forces, change is accelerating in many sectors. To drive this transformation in ways that bring about social, environmental and economic justice at a local, national, regional and global levels, new knowledge and strong cross-regional networks capable of foregrounding different realities, needs and agendas will be essential. In fact, the power of knowledge matters today in ways that humanity has probably never experienced before, placing an emphasis on the roles of research, academics and universities. In this collection, an international diverse collection of scholars from the southern African and Nordic regions critically review the SDGs in relation to their own areas of expertise, while placing the process of knowledge production in the spotlight. In Part I, the contributors provide a sober assessment of the obstacles that neo-liberal hegemony presents to substantive transformation. In Part Two, lessons learned from NorthSouth research collaborations and academic exchanges are assessed in terms of their potential to offer real alternatives. In Part III, a set of case studies supply clear and nuanced analyses of the scale of the challenges faced in ensuring that no one is left behind. This accessible and absorbing collection will be of interest to anyone interested in NorthSouth research networks and in the contemporary debates on the role of knowledge production. The Southern AfricanNordic Centre (SANORD) is a network of higher education institutions that stretches across Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Universities in the southern African and Nordic regions that are not yet members are encouraged to join.

Book Electrical Measuring Instruments and Measurements

Download or read book Electrical Measuring Instruments and Measurements written by S.C. Bhargava and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written for the benefit of engineering students and practicing engineers alike, is the culmination of the author's four decades of experience related to the subject of electrical measurements, comprising nearly 30 years of experimental research and more than 15 years of teaching at several engineering institutions. The unique feature of this book, apart from covering the syllabi of various universities, is the style of presentation of all important aspects and features of electrical measurements, with neatly and clearly drawn figures, diagrams and colour and b/w photos that illustrate details of instruments among other things, making the text easy to follow and comprehend. Enhancing the chapters are interspersed explanatory comments and, where necessary, footnotes to help better understanding of the chapter contents. Also, each chapter begins with a "recall" to link the subject matter with the related science or phenomenon and fundamental background. The first few chapters of the book comprise "Units, Dimensions and Standards"; "Electricity, Magnetism and Electromagnetism" and "Network Analysis". These topics form the basics of electrical measurements and provide a better understanding of the main topics discussed in later chapters. The last two chapters represent valuable assets of the book, and relate to (a) "Magnetic Measurements", describing many unique features not easily available elsewhere, a good study of which is essential for the design and development of most electric equipment – from motors to transformers and alternators, and (b) "Measurement of Non-electrical Quantities", dealing extensively with the measuring techniques of a number of variables that constitute an important requirement of engineering measurement practices. The book is supplemented by ten appendices covering various aspects dealing with the art and science of electrical measurement and of relevance to some of the topics in main chapters. Other useful features of the book include an elaborate chapter-by-chapter list of symbols, worked examples, exercises and quiz questions at the end of each chapter, and extensive authors' and subject index. This book will be of interest to all students taking courses in electrical measurements as a part of a B.Tech. in electrical engineering. Professionals in the field of electrical engineering will also find the book of use.
