Book Research on Techniques for Light Modulation Detection Part Ii Frequency Demodulators

Download or read book Research on Techniques for Light Modulation Detection Part Ii Frequency Demodulators written by E. O. Ammann and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a one-year program on the demodulation of frequency-modulated (FM) or phase-modulated (PM) light are presented. Theoretical and experimental studies were made both of direct demodulation and heterodyne demodulation. A technique employing conversion of FM to AM via a birefringent device with subsequent detection by a traveling-wave phototube is used for the demodulation method. The report deals with techniques and devices for converting FM (and PM) to AM at optical frequencies. Comprehensive analyses and discussions are given on two simple birefringent devices, the birefringent discriminator and the optical ratio detector, devices capable of converting FM to AM and PM to AM, respectively. The use of multicrystal devices in demodulators is treated. Included are two optical network synthesis techniques for realizing birefringent devices having arbitrarily specified transfer functions. The conclusions reached in this program are stated, and the major contributions are summarized.

Book Research of Techniques for Light Modulation Detection Part I Amplitude Demodulators

Download or read book Research of Techniques for Light Modulation Detection Part I Amplitude Demodulators written by B. J. McMurtry and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a one-year applied research program on the demodulation of amplitude-modulated (AM) light are presented. Sufficient information is provided for the detailed understanding, design, and use of traveling-wave microwave phototubes (TWPs), the most promising detector for broadband-modulated light. The report includes: (1) the idealized analysis which first pointed out the more important TWP design considerations and operating characteristics; (2) a more complete computeraided analysis which gives detailed information on the effects of the various beam-circuit parameters and operating conditions; and (3) an analysis of the electron gun region, with emphasis on velocity spread and current density effects. The results of a detailed experimental analysis of the TWP are presented, providing both verification of the more complete theoretical treatment and information on generally-useful photodetector test techniques. Experimental data are given on several other types of photodetectors. A discussion of the design and construction of TWPs with S-1 photocathodes contains material of practical importance to TWP builders.

Book Demodulation of Frequency Or Space Modulated Light

Download or read book Demodulation of Frequency Or Space Modulated Light written by Stanford University. Stanford Electronics Laboratories and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation and detection of a light beam which is deflected back and forth at a microwave rate in accordance with frequency modulation on the beam is considered. Deflection was achieved by sending the frequency modulated light through a dispersing element. The detection system consisted of a photocathode which emitted a transversely modulated electron beam into a transverse-field interaction circuit. General analyses were developed for the dispersion and electron beam-circuit interaction systems. The applicability of the instantaneous-frequency viewpoint was explored in detail, and a new condition for the validity of this viewpoint was derived. Phototube design procedures were formulated. Experiments demonstrated the dispersion and interaction mechanisms, including an unforeseen effect involving partial interception of the deflected light beam. The experiments supported the detailed theoretical analyses. An examination of the basic noise limitation revealed a significant advantage over certain other FM light detection systems. As optical modulation techniques improve, it is expected that this approach may represent a superior means of detection in optical communications systems. (Author).

Book Research on Techniques for Light Modulation Detection

Download or read book Research on Techniques for Light Modulation Detection written by and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report covers the seventh quarter of an applied research program conducted by the Sylvania Microwave Device Division to establish techiques for light modulation detection. New results are described in the following two areas: (1) In IER No. 6, two synthesis techniques (termed I and II) for realizing an arbitrary optical transfer function were described. Synthesis procedure no. I yields a filter containing n birefringent crystals, n bias units, and n + l polarizers, while synthesis procedure no. II gives a filter containing n birefringent crystals and two polarizers. IER No. 7 describes an important improvement in synthesis procedure no. I which allows us to maximize the filter output. (2) A proposed technique is presented for modifying the birefringent discrimnator so that it can accommodate light of an arbitrary polarization. (Author).
