Book Research Frontiers for the Chemical Industry Report on the Second Annual CHF SCI Innovation Day Warren G Schlinger Symposium

Download or read book Research Frontiers for the Chemical Industry Report on the Second Annual CHF SCI Innovation Day Warren G Schlinger Symposium written by Cyrus Mody and published by Chemical Heritage Foundation. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Squeezed on all sides -- including from raw material costs (which are at unprecedented highs), narrowing access to feedstocks, and growing competition in commodity markets -- chemical firms must create new high-value materials and services to survive and profit. This report summarizes the second annual CHF-SCI Innovation Day and suggests solutions for current challenges based on this forum in which scientists and technology managers gather to explore frontier areas for the chemical industry. The industry¿s future, the authors argue, lies in a strategic ¿wager¿ on disruptive technologies, balanced by incremental steps to develop new feedstocks and manufacturing processes that yield novel materials with less environmental impact.

Download or read book Research Frontiers for the Chemical Industry Report on the Third Annual CHF SCI Innovation Day Warren G Schlinger Symposium written by Cyrus Mody and published by Chemical Heritage Foundation. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition is becoming ever fiercer in the chemical industry as new firms from such emerging economies as China and India enter the market and as technological advances, potential new regulations, and rising energy and feedstock costs shrink profit margins. Yet chemical firms are also discovering that cooperation, even between competitors, is necessary for meeting today¿s challenges. Today¿s market dilemmas and innovation systems are too complex for any one org. Successful networks must include competitors working in partnership. This report describes a variety of partnerships among chemical and materials firms that combine cooperation and competition in novel, forward-looking ways.

Book Research Frontiers for the Chemical Industry Innovation Frontiers in Industrial Chemistry

Download or read book Research Frontiers for the Chemical Industry Innovation Frontiers in Industrial Chemistry written by Ted Everson and published by . This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The driving force for technological innovation comes frequently from the pressures that shape real and perceived societal needs. Successful innovation is characterized not simply by invention, but by an ability to successfully intermesh new ideas or methods with social context, to implement them and make them real. Because successful innovations enter society through diverse pathways, they often bring about an unexpected reconstruction of the social milieu. And once entrenched, successful innovations tend to become linked with that social world, making extraction difficult. Panel summaries: Eco-Friendly Products; Sustainable Chemistry and Eng.; Chemistry of Energy Sources; Health Materials; Electronic Materials; and Emerging Global Economies.

This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key concern is to exchange and debate broad viewpoints on innovation in the chemical industry rather than to discuss scientific and technical details. These proceedings provide a unique opportunity for young industrial chemists to take a step back from their day-to-day operations to contemplate the bigger picture, expanding their outlooks into the broader social, economic, and political contexts that impinge on contemporary innovative activities in the chemical and molecular science industries. Panel summaries: Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering; Electronic Materials; Chemistry of Energy Sources; Health Materials; and Emerging Global Economies. Appendix I: Mapping the Future of Science and Innovation.

Book Preparing Chemists and Chemical Engineers for a Globally Oriented Workforce

Download or read book Preparing Chemists and Chemical Engineers for a Globally Oriented Workforce written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-02 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalizationâ€"the flow of people, goods, services, capital, and technology across international bordersâ€"is significantly impacting the chemistry and chemical engineering professions. Chemical companies are seeking new ideas, a trained workforce, and new market opportunities regardless of geographic location. During an October 2003 workshop, leaders in chemistry and chemical engineering from industry, academia, government, and private funding organizations explored the implications of an increasingly global research environment for the chemistry and chemical engineering workforce. The workshop presentations described deficiencies in the current educational system and the need to create and sustain a globally aware workforce in the near future. The goal of the workshop was to inform the Chemical Sciences Roundtable, which provides a science-oriented, apolitical forum for leaders in the chemical sciences to discuss chemically related issues affecting government, industry, and universities.

Book International Benchmarking of U S Chemical Engineering Research Competitiveness

Download or read book International Benchmarking of U S Chemical Engineering Research Competitiveness written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-08-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than $400 billion worth of products rely on innovations in chemistry. Chemical engineering, as an academic discipline and profession, has enabled this achievement. In response to growing concerns about the future of the discipline, International Benchmarking of U.S. Chemical Engineering Research Competitiveness gauges the standing of the U.S. chemical engineering enterprise in the world. This in-depth benchmarking analysis is based on measures including numbers of published papers, citations, trends in degrees conferred, patent productivity, and awards. The book concludes that the United States is presently, and is expected to remain, among the world's leaders in all subareas of chemical engineering research. However, U.S. leadership in some classical and emerging subareas will be strongly challenged. This critical analysis will be of interest to practicing chemical engineers, professors and students in the discipline, economists, policy makers, major research university administrators, and executives in industries dependent upon innovations in chemistry.

Book The Importance of Chemical Research to the U S Economy

Download or read book The Importance of Chemical Research to the U S Economy written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry plays a pivotal role in the strength of the U.S. economy and the advancement of humankind. Chemists' achievements include life-saving pharmaceuticals, advanced energy solutions, improved agricultural productivity, and novel materials used in products from clothing to electronic devices. The many sectors reliant on the U.S. chemical economy account for about 25% of the U.S. GDP and support 4.1 million U.S. jobs. However, a new and evolving chemistry landscape requires changes with regard to funding, training, and a focus on integrating sustainability into manufacturing, product usage, and product disposal. This report identifies strategies and options for research investments that will support U.S. leadership while considering environmental sustainability and developing a diverse chemical economy workforce with equitable opportunities for all chemistry talent. The report recommends that funding agencies and philanthropic organizations who support the chemical sciences fund as large a breadth of fundamental research projects as possible. Chemical industry and their partners at universities, scientific research institutions, and national laboratories should align the objectives of fundamental research to directly assist with new practices toward environmental stewardship, sustainability, and clear energy. Additionally, the report recommends that funding agencies make substantial investment toward education research to enable innovative ways of teaching about emerging concepts, tools and technologies.
