Book Data Privacy in Telematics

Download or read book Data Privacy in Telematics written by Harsh Parikh and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This thesis concerns the privacy implications of digital communication with vehicles. At present, an ever-increasing number of automobiles are being outfitted with digital sensing systems that record or transmit data about the vehicle in real-time. These are known as telematic systems. The result is that a large amount of information about the use of a vehicle is being stored in the vehicle itself, is transmitted over airwaves and is used and stored at the point of reception. Much of this information is stored and processed without the knowledge or consent of the vehicle's owner, let alone the driver or the occupants. This situation naturally raises privacy issues. For what purpose is the data being taken? Are there unintended harmful uses of the data? Do public safety and other benefits outweigh the privacy risks? ... [sic] We attempt to answer these questions in this thesis study. Initially, we introduce the meaning of telematics, how it works, its current state and future growth. We then look at the differences between telematics and other location-based technologies which forms one of the major distinguishing factors between this thesis and previous research. Next, we explore the kinds of data that can be collected from automobiles. This data can have many uses that could result in the invasion of privacy. After investigating these privacy implications we create guidelines that can be used by government agencies and self-regulating bodies to create privacy policies for telematics. Finally, we discuss the future of telematics data privacy."

Book Telematics and Work

    Book Details:
  • Author : J.H. Erik Andriesson
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 2013-05-24
  • ISBN : 1134833423
  • Pages : 465 pages

Download or read book Telematics and Work written by J.H. Erik Andriesson and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of a publication series emerging from an international interdisciplinary study group on "New Technologies and Work (NeTWork)". NeTWork is sponsored by the Werner-Reimers Foundation (Bad Homburg, Germany) and the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (Paris). The NeTWork study group has set itself the task of intellectually penetrating various problem domains posed by the introduction and spread of new technologies in work settings. This problem focus requires interdisciplinary co-operation. The usual mode of operating is to identify an important problem within the NeTWork scope, to attempt to prestructure it and then to invite original contributions from European researchers or research teams actively involved in relevant analytic or developmental work. A specific workshop serves to cross-fertilize the different approaches and to help to integrate more fully the individual contributions. The concept of telematics refers to the integration of computer, telecommunication and information technologies. It alludes to the opportunities presented by the technical means to communicate and transfer data over large distances by "intelligent equipment". Teleshopping, teleconferencing, teleworking and telebanking are but a few examples of a development which influences both public and private environments. Both households and workplaces are likely to be thoroughly changed by telematics. This publication emphasises the application of telematics in working environments. The central questions of the book are: How will the present and future development of telematics effect the nature and organization of work, and under which conditions will this development be optimal? From the various contributions it is clear that telematics is not a single direct cause or determinant of particular changes in work and organization. The development and application of telematics depend on decision making of actors at a political scene both outside and inside the work organizations. The effects of the use of these applications appear to be co-determined by many other factors. In fact, the technology interacts with political, economic, and social factors in a complex process that shapes new organizational forms and work relationships.

Book Driving Confidence and In vehicle Telematics

Download or read book Driving Confidence and In vehicle Telematics written by Thomas Ely Hutchinson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-vehicle telematics is a term that encompasses a wide range of technologies, which aid the driving function through features assisting in safety and service tasks. These technologies are designed to give the operator and passengers added safety control and convenient service amenities- both of which contribute to an overall increase in piece of mind and satisfaction in the driving experience. Much effort has been exercised in the rapid development of technologies that comprise in-vehicle telematics systems. But, as is the case with many emerging technologies, these systems appeared on the market before thorough study of their impact on end users had even begun. In recent years, several studies have shown the effects of various technologies on driver distraction, and many insightful results have emerged from that work. However, little has been done to understand consumer perception of these in-vehicle technologies. This thesis provides understanding of the role of in-vehicle telematics in today's automobiles and an analysis of survey data on driving confidence. Particular attention is given to the 50+ driving population, the nature of self-regulation among drivers in this age cohort, and the role that in-vehicle telematics can play in increasing confidence of older drivers. The objective of this thesis is to present the findings of a consumer perception survey in the context of the evolving dialogue on in-vehicle technologies and lay the groundwork for future studies on related topics. Findings in this work show that telematics can positively affect driving confidence, especially in the oldest women drivers. The results also show that telematics providers can greatly improve their delivery of these systems to appeal to a wider consumer base.

Book Driving Connectivity

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Christopher Quannah Webb

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 78 pages

Download or read book Driving Connectivity written by John Christopher Quannah Webb and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As stated by Joe Guglielmi, President of Motorola's Integrated Electronics Systems Sector, in 1998 "... the most important technological advancement of the next decade is the one that will allow consumers to receive computer connectivity, in an easy to operate format, while in the automobile.' Guglielmi based his assertion on growing consumer connectivity expectations, resulting from consumer reliance on real-time information fueled by increased usage of the World Wide Web and increasing commuting times. In short Guglielmi asserted that due to growing consumer expectations concerning connectivity, Telematics represented not only a new line of business for automotive OEMs and wireless manufacturers, but a very profitable one as well. For this reason nearly all OEMs (Globally) of the 1990s entered, or conducted extensive studies on the Telematics space over the course of the next decade. Over these years, in the United States market, certain dominant features did emerge that helped to shape expectations over the course of the decade. These features were based around the themes of both safety (e.g. airbag deployment notification) and service (e.g. 24-hour liveoperator support). By successfully integrating these features, while gaining GM corporate marketing and financial support, OnStar emerged as a dominant design in the US market throughout this period, updating their technologies to meet the gradual evolution of the wireless technologies and customer demand. While the innovations in the wireless space over the early portion of the decade had been slow enough for OEM's to maintain parity, recent (2005 and beyond) explosions in -3- wireless and handheld technologies, and in particular the emergence of smartphones, have led to disruption and fragmentation of the Telematics landscape. Much of this disruption has come from the fact that smartphones are delivering technologies that better serve consumers' core needs and are helping to develop new consumer expectations in terms of applications and connectivity. As noted by Bryan Inouye, National Strategic Planning Manager at Toyota Motors, in early 2009, "the rapid advancement in both wireless capabilities and handhelds has caused a disruption to the traditional OnStar model. We are now left contemplating how best to serve our customers by offering the best in safety features, connectivity, and infotainment." The purpose of this paper is to provide an assessment of the Telematics industry, specifically within the U.S. Market, which, according to experts and OEM leaders like Akio Toyoda, represents the most mature and advanced Telematics market when assessed holistically. Using this assessment, we will then provide a recommendation for the U.S. division of Toyota Motors, Toyota Motor Sales, on how best to proceed into the future. While Toyota Motors is used as an example company, this recommendation could easily be applicable to any Japanese-based automotive manufacturer operating in the United States.
