This question is rich in implications, central to the uniqueness of the work, and virtually undiscussed in the Mozart literature."—Thomas Bauman, co-author of Mozart's Operas

  • Pages : 516 pages

Download or read book A Requiem for Hania written by Greg Dinner and published by . This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What begins in the Warsaw Ghetto...will find the music of your heart. There are secrets in one's life that when revealed change the lives of all around. A REQUIEM FOR HANIA is a story of secrets and a story of who we are, who we were once meant to be. Inspired by a true story, based purposely on musical form, the novel follows three primary characters' journeys: In 1942, Hania Stern, a young Jewish girl, and her family are caught up in the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto. Hania survives when so many others do not survive, escaping when others do not escape. But escape is not release. Hers is the story of a soul lost, and a soul found. In 1968, Pawel Weisz, an avant-garde composer and teacher in Warsaw, knows little of his own past; what he does know he denies. At a time of great protest, anti-Semitism and attempted change in a Communist state at a crossroads, Pawel falls in a forbidden love with a radical young Jewish violinist. But the repressive State and the times in which the two men find one another prevent any real possibility of such. Theirs is a love discovered too late, leading to loss, to great pain, to exile...while in the shadows State Security watches and waits. And in 2006, Agniezka Janiec, an actor in Warsaw, seeking herself through her art, discovers at the death of her grandmother, Hannah Kielar, secrets that push her into a journey of self-discovery: about her Grandmother, about Warsaw in the Ghetto years, about where she comes from and who she is. About those lost, and those found.A REQUIEM FOR HANIA is a story of identity, of loss, of rediscovery. It is a story about friendship, about music that illuminates our common humanity, about the pain of the past and the potential for the present and for the future. It is finally a story of where we all come from, who we are...and where we ultimately are going as we find ourselves, as we grieve and as we celebrate.

Book Reform of the Reform

  • Author : Thomas Kocik
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2010-01-15
  • ISBN : 1681495406

Download or read book Reform of the Reform written by Thomas Kocik and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbed by the direction in which the post Vatican II liturgical reforms have moved, two fictitious representatives of mutually antagonistic movements debate the remedy for "correct" liturgical reform. This unique work presents a debate between a "traditionalist" who argues for a return to the pre-Vatican II liturgy, and a reformist (no liberal himself) who advocates a new liturgical reform more in keeping with what the Council fathers had in mind. They bring to the debate the insights of renowned authorities on the liturgy, including Cardinal Ratzinger, Msgr. Klaus Gamber, Michael Davies, Fr. Brian Harrison and Fr. Aidan Nichols. This book is written for anyone interested in the Church's liturgy, and the controversies surrounding the liturgical renewal. It is both a primer for those who lack the theological and liturgical expertise to articulate their dissatisfaction with the state of the liturgy, and an excellent resource for those specialists who would appreciate having a single volume for consulting salient points from numerous authorities.

Book Fortune s Bones

Book excerpt: Winner of the Coretta Scott King Book Award For young readers comes a poetic commemoration of the life of an 18th-century slave, from a past poet laureate and three-time National Book Award finalist For over 200 years, the Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut has housed a mysterious skeleton. In 1996, community members decided to find out what they could about it. Historians discovered that the bones were those of an enslaved man named Fortune, who was owned by a local doctor. After Fortune’s death, the doctor rendered the bones. Further research revealed that Fortune had married, had fathered four children, and had been baptized later in life. His bones suggest that after a life of arduous labor, he died in 1798 at about the age of 60. The Manumission Requiem is Marilyn Nelson’s poetic commemoration of Fortune’s life. Detailed notes and archival photographs enhance the reader’s appreciation of the poem.

Book A Mass for the Dead

Download or read book A Mass for the Dead written by William Gibson and published by Scribner Paper Fiction. This book was released on 1968 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is written in remembrance of Gibson's deceased parents and in honor of their lives. In reflecting on them he in turn makes it a tribute to parenthood and a dedication to his own children. Gibson's language is striking in its poignancy. Despite the title, this is not a religious work, but a work of love from a child to parent and from the child-become-parent to his own children. Interspersed between the reminiscences of his parents and his childhood, Gibson inserts achingly beautiful epistles to his children for their guidance about life and parenting.--Adapted from barnesandnoble.com.

Book Messa da requiem

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ferdinando Bertoni
  • Publisher : A-R Editions, Inc.
  • Release :
  • ISBN : 198720901X
  • Pages : 203 pages

Download or read book Messa da requiem written by Ferdinando Bertoni and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present edition is the second volume of three. Collectively, these editions form a critical anthology of requiem masses composed by musicians of St. Mark’s, Venice over a long period extending from the late sixteenth century to the closing years of the nineteenth century. The featured musician of this volume is Ferdinando Bertoni (1725–1813), who was much celebrated during the classical period as a composer of both sacred and secular music and who gained significant exposure as the master of music at St. Mark’s. Most of the music in the edition can be firmly connected to the funeral of the heroic Admiral Angelo Emo (1731–92), which was held in St. Mark’s during 1792. Emo was no ordinary Venetian: he was Venice’s last admiral to lead La Serenissima into battle and a Procuratore de ultra of St. Mark’s, a position placing him in the tier immediately below the ruling doge, Lodovico Manin. The music assembled here for the first time in a modern critical edition is a valuable relic of this temporal juncture in the history, not only of the ducal church, but of Venice broadly. The requiem stands as one of the last outstandingly sumptuous works performed at the ducal church before Venice’s fall from grace in the closing years of the eighteenth century. With its kaleidoscopic mixture of styles, the work may sit comfortably as the showpiece in a concert program, or, authentically, as the musical backbone of an ecclesiastical setting, as it was originally intended.

Book The Mass in My Life

Download or read book The Mass in My Life written by Rosemary Lunardini and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mass in My Life is the story of a Catholic laywoman's lifelong experience of the Mass. She recaptures childhood experiences, traces a path to adulthood, and in her elder years finds a wondrous gratitude for the Mass. Along the way, family, friends, pastors, favorite authors, and the Mass itself lighten her way as she seeks, in the words of an old missal, "the God who is the joy of my youth." Personal and family memories are recalled side-by-side with selected prayers of the Mass from her collection of missals that covers seven decades. The meaning of the Mass unfolds as the years go by, marked by ordinary days as well as rites of passage. Each chapter focuses on a milestone or period in the author's life and a prayer from the Order of the Mass. The two themes, life and Mass, interweave chronologically in a unique twofold structure. There are rich and sometimes troubling memories of personal and family life here, but always an attentive longing for the Mass which the author sees as the transforming experience of her life.
