Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 11 to 15 July 1977 about 60 physiologists, endo crinologists, ecologists and other biologists from 14 countries convened at the University Montpellier for a symposium on Environmental Endocrinology. This meet ing was organized as a Satellite Symposium of the 27th International Congress of Physiological Sciences, Paris, 18-23 July 1977. This volume is a record of the com munications presented at the symposium. The objectives of the program were to examine the role of the endocrine system in a wide spectrum of adjustments and adaptations to changes in environmental conditions by various spe cies of animals, including man, and to promote an ex change of ideas among investigators who have approached these functions from diverse aspects. The diversity of the information and ideas communicated is great. Of necessity, they represent only an extremely modest se lection of the many facets of endocrine function in the interaction of animals with their environments. Be yond the usefulness of the communications individually, we hope that they collectively demonstrate the substan tial heuristic value of the concept of environmental endocrinology as it was perceived by the participants. We acknowledge gratefully the kindness and sympathy of Professor Jaques ROUZAUD, President of the University of Montpellier II, for his generous extension of the hospitality of the University to the Symposium. We are most grateful to Mrs. Monique VIEU who effected so well the secretarial organization of the Sympos.

Book Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates Volume 3

Download or read book Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates Volume 3 written by David Norris and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of volumes represents a comprehensive and integrated treatment of reproduction in vertebrates from fishes of all sorts through mammals. It is designed to provide a readable, coordinated description of reproductive basics in each group of vertebrates as well as an introduction to the latest trends in reproductive research and our understanding of reproductive events. Whereas each chapter and each volume is intended to stand alone as a review of that topic or vertebrate group, respectively, the volumes are prepared so as to provide a thorough topical treatment across the vertebrates. Terminology has been standardized across the volumes to reduce confusion where multiple names exist in the literature, and a comprehensive glossary of these terms and their alternative names is provided. A complete, essential and up to date reference for research scientists working on vertebrate hormones and reproduction - and on animlals as models in human reproductive research Covers the endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, physiology, behaviour and anatomy of vertebrate reproduction Structured coverage of the major themes for all five vertebrate groups allows a consistent treatment for all Special chapters elaborate on features specific to individual vertebrate groups and to comparative aspects, similarities and differences between them

Book Seasonality of Female Reproductive Cycles in the Neotropical Aquatic Snake Helicops Pastazae

Download or read book Seasonality of Female Reproductive Cycles in the Neotropical Aquatic Snake Helicops Pastazae written by Daniela García Cobos and published by . This book was released on 2017* with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive cycles of snakes have a great variability in timings and may be influenced by biotic or abiotic factors. For the Neotropical region, where seasonal variation in temperature is minimum, we hypothesize that the reproductive cycle of snakes is mostly influenced on the precipitation pattern of the region. The reproductive cycle of the colubrid aquatic snake, Helicops pastazae, was studied through monthly examination of gonadal dissections. We investigated female population in a mountainous region of Colombia with seasonal precipitation patterns. Other aspects of the reproductive biology such as sexual dimorphism, sexual size of maturity, clutch size, and litter size was also investigated. Males and females were found during all the year, with a higher encounter during the dry season. Recruitment of neonates was during the low rainfall period and the dry season. Sexual dimorphism was recorded in males with larger tails than females, and females with a wider midbody width than males. There was no significant difference between head length and head width among both sexes. Females have a discontinuous seasonal synchronic population, with a peak in reproductive activity during the period of high rainfall and ovipositioning of eggs occurring during the low rainfalls or dry season. We suggest the reproductive activity of the population studied is highly influenced by the rainfall patterns of the region.

Book Sperm Competition and Sexual Selection

Download or read book Sperm Competition and Sexual Selection written by Tim R. Birkhead and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-08-12 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sperm Competition and Sexual Selection presents the intricate ways in which sperm compete to fertilize eggs and how this has prompted reinterpretations of breeding behavior. This book provides a theoretical framework for the study of sperm competition, which is a central part of sexual selection. It also discusses the roles of females and the relationships between paternal care in sperm competition. The chapters focusing on taxonomic development are diverse and cover all the major animal groups, both vertebrate and invertebrate, and plants. The final chapter provides an overview discussing the relationship between sperm competition and sexual selection in terms of both function and mechanism and how these translate into species fitness. This book will be of prime interest to behaviorists, ecologists and evolutionary biologists, suggesting new avenues of research and new ways of approaching old problems. - The only up-to-date summary of a central and popular subject - Well known editors and authors - Provides a theoretical framework for the study of sperm competition - Covers all major animal groups - Includes a chapter on plants
