Book Manual of Modern Viticulture

Download or read book Manual of Modern Viticulture written by G. Foëx and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Modern Viticulture: Reconstitution With American Vines Practical viticulture has undergone remarkable changes since the advent of phylloxera in Europe, particularly in, regard to the reconstruction of vineyards on a phylloxera-resistant basis, necessitated by the continuous advance of this terrible scourge. For the same reasons, these radical transformations are now being gradually but surely forced on Victorian vine-growers, and will at no distant time become imperative. The phylloxera has, in spite of repeated assertions to the contrary, gained a permanent footing in Victorian vineyards. It would therefore be absurd to ignore any longer the necessity for vigorous action in regard to the reconstitution of our infected vineyard areas on phylloxera-proof stock; costly annual treatments of infected vineyards with insecticides, on obvious grounds of expense, being simply out of the question in Victoria. The advance of the phylloxera has proved throughout European, Asiatic, and American vineyards to be irresistible. All attempts to eradicate the insect, or even localize its outbreaks, have been utter failures, notwithstanding enormous public expenditure. It is deliberately courting disaster to disregard the costly experience of all the great wine-growing countries of the world in this matter. Phylloxera eradication and even localization have failed in every country. It would, therefore, be sheer folly to establish new vineyards in Victoria in or near infected areas except on phylloxera-resistant stock, as this method alone assures permanence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pamphlets on Viticulture In this case, too, it is to be noted that a merely sandy soil, as is generally understood by the term in this State, is not sufficient to check the spread or development of the phylloxera. There must be at least 85% Of pure sand in a soil that is to be relied on as a phylloxera proof soil. But even this high percentage of sand is not sufficient, if there be a Slight admixture of clay. More or less lime does not make much difference. It has been found that while the Vitis Vinifera will grow well in sandy soils of the above description, yet they require heavy fertilization and yield crops of an inferior quality, though heavy quantity. Book The Dirty Guide to Wine Following Flavor from Ground to Glass

Download or read book The Dirty Guide to Wine Following Flavor from Ground to Glass written by Alice Feiring and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover new favorites by tracing wine back to its roots Still drinking Cabernet after that one bottle you liked five years ago? It can be overwhelming if not intimidating to branch out from your go-to grape, but everyone wants their next wine to be new and exciting. How to choose the right one? Award-winning wine critic Alice Feiring presents an all-new way to look at the world of wine. While grape variety is important, a lot can be learned about wine by looking at the source: the ground in which it grows. A surprising amount of information about a wine’s flavor and composition can be gleaned from a region’s soil, and this guide makes it simple to find the wines you’ll love. Featuring a foreword by Master Sommelier Pascaline Lepeltier, who contributed her vast knowledge throughout the book, The Dirty Guide to Wine organizes wines not by grape, not by region, not by New or Old World, but by soil. If you enjoy a Chardonnay from Burgundy, you might find the same winning qualities in a deep, red Rioja. Feiring also provides a clarifying account of the traditions and techniques of wine-tasting, demystifying the practice and introducing a whole new way to enjoy wine to sommeliers and novice drinkers alike.

Book The Vineyards in Napa County

Download or read book The Vineyards in Napa County written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vineyards in Napa County: Being the Report of E. C. Priber, Commissioner for the Napa District, to the Board of State Viticultural Commissioners of California The present report on the condition of the vineyards of Napa County was undertaken by the Board of State Viticultural Commissioners with a view of ascertaining what decrease in the acreage planted in vines in that county has been caused by the phylloxera in the past two years, as well as to give as much information as possible regarding the success of the various resistant stocks in different soils, etc., and other matters pertaining to viticulture in the county of interest to grape growers, wine makers, and wine merchants. In 1890, when the last census was made, Napa County reported 18,229 acres planted in vines. The present report shows 16,6511/2 acres. It will thus be seen that the decrease has been very considerable. The phylloxera is reported to have reached a point about three miles above St. Helena, and it can be but a question of a short time until the Calistoga vineyards suffer as have those of the lower valley. At present there are 507 vineyards reported in Napa County, and of these 244, or nearly half, report the existence of phylloxera. This will give an idea of what can be expected to occur to the vineyards of the entire valley within a few years. Wherever resistants have not been planted, the death of the vines appears only a question of a short time. In the tables which follow, the acreage reported as infested by phylloxera is certainly misleading, as is also the reported acreage good for one more crop, the acreage that will be dug up for causes other than phylloxera, and probably the cooperage. It is difficult to secure correct information on such points; vineyardists are loth to give such information, as well as to give information as to stocks of wine on hand. The reports of wine stocks were given in confidence. The different cellars reported an aggregate of slightly over 5,000,000 gallons of wine in the valley. The stocks of two cellars in Napa had to be estimated, as well as the cooperage in the same, the owners refusing to supply such information. It is naturally to be expected that in making such a canvass errors will occur. If any are noted, the vineyardists affected will please notify me. There is no disposition to do any one injustice, nor to misrepresent any one. Any corrections sent in will be printed, and distributed, for insertion in this book. The canvass was made by Mr. A. Warren Robinson, of Napa, under direction of Commissioner E. C. Priber and the Executive Committee of the Board. Book The Vineyards in Sonoma County

Download or read book The Vineyards in Sonoma County written by Board of State Viticultura Commissioner and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vineyards in Sonoma County: Being the Report of I. Deturk, Commissioner for the Sonoma District, to the Board of State Viticultural Commissioners of California Much attention has been given to the vineyards infested by phylloxera. In some instances the patience of the owners has been wearied by the questions asked. It was ascertained that in some instances high fertilization and very thorough cultivation were tried, but the ravages of the disease continued just the same. One or two flooded their vineyards with water, where it could be done, but this did not tend to check the deadly work of the disease. Bisulphide of carbon was tried, but it proved too expensive, and is not known to have done much good. Such efforts to save vineyards were exceptional cases. Most grape growers have made no effort whatever at special treatment, either digging out the infested vineyard and planting the ground to something else, or replanting with resistants as the old vines have died. From the best information obtainable, I conclude that the first appearance of phylloxera in this county was in the Dresel-Gundlach vineyard, a few miles south of Sonoma, in 1874 or 1875. There, much money was expended on suggested remedies and in experimenting with resistants. In time all the old vines were destroyed and resistants took their place, and the vineyard is now in a very flourishing condition. From this old and noted vineyard the phylloxera has extended north some twenty miles. At Glen Ellen it crossed over into Bennett Valley some five or six years ago, through which it has entered northward several miles. Three years ago the disease made its appearance in the Upper Russian River Valley, in the vineyards of L.G. Ellis and C.P. Moore. These vineyards are about three miles apart, and the river flows between them. Mr. Ellis can offer no explanation for the appearance of the insects in his vineyard, unless it was brought there with some cuttings received from a district in which phylloxera has since shown itself. Mr. Moore shipped some of his grapes to a winery in an infested district a few years ago, and he thinks the troublesome insect may have been carried to his home in the boxes returned. There are one or two other vineyards in the neighborhood of that of Mr. Moore in which a considerable number of vines have died, but the owners attribute the loss to other causes. The work of destruction is very apparent in the extensive vineyard owned by J.G. Fair in Vallejo Township. One field of nearly forty acres is badly infested, and a single spot of a few rods square was found in a neighboring vineyard. In all other sections of the county the vines were found to be healthy, except an occasional touch of black knot. The people owning vineyards on the deep sandy loam that predominates in Analy Township are quite hopeful that vines in soil of that character are safe from attacks of phylloxera, but those cultivating the heavier loams do not speak with as much confidence. Within a few days, men who pronounced their vines healthy two months ago have reported the recent appearance of phylloxera in their vineyards. In the Sonoma Valley a considerable number of resistant vineyards have been planted, but many old vineyards have disappeared and their owners have abandoned the culture of the grape. In other portions of the county there is much talk of turning attention to other crops. Grape growers are generally much discouraged - some on account of the ravages of the phylloxera, and others at the low prices which have long prevailed.
