Book The Story of the Irish in Boston

Download or read book The Story of the Irish in Boston written by James Bernard Cullen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Irish in Boston: Together With Biographical Sketches of Representative Men and Noted Women HE purpose of this work is to give an account of the settlement, progress, and development of the Irish and their descendants in Boston, from the earliest times. The propriety, expediency, and necessity of presenting the subject was conceived by the author ten years ago, while engaged in preparing an article for the Boston Pilot, relating to the Irishmen of Boston. The work then seemed to be impracticable, by reason of the complex character of unpublished historical data, the long period of time that would be required to unravel the skein and weave the story together. Within a few years the labor of examining various histories and collecting manuscripts of invaluable interest and worth was commenced. The researches in this direction revealed many sur prising events in the colonial, as well as in the more recent history of Boston, wherein Irishmen were active participants; and, strange to say, where the importance of their achievements is mentioned at all, or they themselves are written about, the most meagre information is given. By careful study and. Recourse to comparative references many facts, hitherto generally unknown, were brought to light. Download or read book The Working Girls of Boston Classic Reprint written by Carroll D. Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working Girls of Boston The population of the city of Boston, according to the Tenth United States Census, in 1880, was of this number were males and were females. The whole number of persons engaged in that year in all occupations was the males numbering and the females out of this latter number of females employed in all occupa tions, there were, in round numbers, employed in occupations other than domestic service, and these constitute the body of the working girls of Boston. To ascertain all the conditions surrounding this large and important class has been the desire of the bureau for some years, but other lines of investigation have prevented the special study of this matter until last year, when a very thorough and searching investigation was commenced. The bureau under took to ascertain the moral, sanitary, physical, and economical conditions of the Working girls of Boston. Of course it was not possible to get a complete personal history of every one of the involved, nor was it necessary, but if such personal history for at least could be obtained accurately, it would scientifically indicate the condition of the whole, and would answer every purpose of the investigation. To this end, dis creet agents were employed to secure by personal application at the homes of the working girls the information desired; the names of girls in various employments were obtained during the daytime, lists were prepared and given to the agents, whose duty it was to call in the evening at the places of resi dence of those designated. N O effort was made to select names, but parties were taken at random in all parts of the city, so that the 'information gathered should be thoroughly representative. Book A New England Girlhood Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New England Girlhood Classic Reprint written by Lucy Larcom and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New England Girlhood The following sketch was written for the young, at the suggestion of friends. My audience is understood to be composed of girls of all ages, and of women who have not for gotten their girlhood. Such as have a friendly appreciation of girls - and of those who write for them are also welcome to listen to as much of my narrative as they choose. All others are eavesdroppers, and, of course, have no right to criticise. To many, the word autobiography implies nothing but conceit and egotism. But these are not necessarily its characteristics. If an apple blossom or a ripe apple could tell its own story, it would be, still more than its own, the story of the sunshine that smiled upon it, of the winds that whispered to it, of the birds that sang around it, of the storms that visited it, and of the motherly tree that held it and fed it until its petals were unfolded and its form developed. Book Portraits of American Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book Portraits of American Women Classic Reprint written by Gamaliel Bradford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of American Women This book might almost be called Portraits of New England Women, since, with the exception of Miss Willard, all of the subjects studied in it were born in New England. As I had devoted a good many years to distinguished representatives of other parts of the country, I felt at liberty to confine my researches for a brief period to souls nearer home. In the study of women it is especially difficult to obtain satisfactory material, and material affecting the lives of New England women was most readily accessible to me. At the same time, of the seven New England characters here portrayed, at least three, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Margaret Fuller Ossoli, and Louisa May Alcott, are so thoroughly iden tified with the country at large that one hardly thinks of their birthplace. Abigail Adams, Mary Lyon, and Emily Dickinson are known to a great number of their countrywomen and Sarah Alden Ripley ought to be so. I hope, moreover, to follow this series with another, embracing prominent women of other sections. I am under deep obligation to various persons for assistance in my work. Mrs. Ripley's grandchildren have kindly supplied me with numerous letters, without which it would have been impossible to make an ade quate study of her. Miss Charlotte A. Hedge has lent me letters of Margaret Fuller to Dr. F. H. Hedge, and the Boston Public Library has placed its valuable Ossoli manuscripts at my disposal. Mount Holyoke College has enabled me to make use of a most interest ing collection of reminiscences of Mary Lyon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman's Story, as Told by Twenty American Women: With Portraits, and Sketches of the Authors The woman's story as told by twenty American women is a composite picture of the representative fiction work of the female writers of the republic. It is one which depicts the types and characteristics of people who unitedly compose our young nation. The composite woman's picture is full of patriotic fire; of the fervor and faith of free institutions, and is distin guished by a zealous allegiance to the domestic quali ties of the people, which have found widest expression under our form of government. The difierences in population; the varieties of classes, and the broad distinctions in local coloring are vividly exhibited in the annals of American fiction, the largest contributors to which are women. The compilation represents the field of fiction, from the appearance of the first great American novel to the present day. Mrs. Stowe's sketch of New England life, which Opens the volume, was the forerunner of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and is as graphic 3 pen-picture of the phase of life it represents as was her famous novel of slavery. Miss Alcott's Transcendental Wild Oats is the truest delineation of the salient features of the Transcendental movement yet made, and is as striking in its faithfulness as is Mrs. Stowe's Uncle Lot. Book One Thousand New Hampshire Notables

Download or read book One Thousand New Hampshire Notables written by Henry Harrison Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Thousand New Hampshire Notables: Brief Biographical Sketches of New Hampshire Men and Women, Native or Resident, Prominent in Public, Professional, Business, Educational, Fraternal or Benevolent Work It is not claimed for this little volume that it is a complete "Who's Who" for the State of New Hampshire. The purpose of the compiler has been to bring together, in compact form, so as to be readily accessible for reference in newspaper offices, libraries and elsewhere, brief biographical sketches of one thousand representative New Hampshire men and women, native or resident. Undoubtedly a thousand more, equally worthy of mention, might have been included, had time and opportunity permitted, and it is to be hoped that another volume, embracing the same, may be hereafter brought out by some interested person. As in "Who's Who" in America and New England, the design has been to include only living subjects, and this purpose has been departed from in only two or three exceptional cases. Nevertheless quite a number of those whose sketches are presented have died since they were arranged for and printed, the fact of death in each case so far as known being noted in the "Addenda," along with material facts, developing in regard to other subjects since their sketches were put in type, and the noting of certain errors which have been detected in some cases, while doubtless others have been overlooked. It is practically impossible to avoid mistakes, typographical and otherwise, in a work of this kind; but it is hoped that this volume is as free therefrom as is usually the case. The pages devoted to "Addenda and Errata" are inserted before the body of the work, and attention thereto should be duly given. The abbreviations used are simple and readily understood, such as "b." for born, "d." for died, "s." for son, "dau." for daughter, "m." for married, and the customary abbreviations for names of states, orders, organizations, societies, etc. It has not appeared necessary to insert a table of abbreviations. The printing of the volume having been commenced as soon as material came to hand and was properly prepared, the sketches are necessarily not arranged in alphabetical order. To have done that would have involved delay until the last sketch was procured before printing was commenced, and a consequent delay of many months more before the appearance of the work. No inconvenience results however, since an alphabetical index of subjects has been prepared, reference to which will enable one to find any particular sketch as readily as would have been the case with an alphabetical arrangement of sketches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cadwallader Colden: A Representative Eighteenth Century Official IT would be idle to affirm that patriotism depends on knowledge, or even on tradition; it would be equally idle to deny that a sense of kinship with a country's past, springing from at least a general familiarity with its development, and sustained by many visible reminders of its history, has much to do with the making of good citizens. Surely, in the face of much contrary evidence, England's storied cities have had a large share in forming the character of her people; while here in America, despite political corruption and social frivol ity, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts stand for the ideas for which their fathers fought to an extent perhaps impossible were not the old houses and halls in which these men lived and spoke still so full of their Spirit. It must therefore be regretted that New York has so few landmarks, and that, perhaps for this reason, so little is known of the men and women who made her history in the century that elapsed between Father Knickerbocker's nominal departure and the Revolution. Too cosmopolitan even then to produce a type, that fact in itself is a link with the present, and it was in the hope of suggesting that there are many more such links that this sketch of one of the predominant characters of this middle period was undertaken. So far as possible the four phases of his life here considered have been treated indepen dently of each other, the detailed account of his work as surveyor-general, for instance, being quite unnecessary to an understanding of his career. With the exception of the printed authorities mentioned in the text, the materials for these pages have been found in the manuscript collection known as the Golden Papers, and owned by the New York Historical Society. The courtesy of the society in permitting their use is hereby gratefully acknowledged, thanks being also due, in an especial manner, to Professor H. L. Osgood, of Columbia University, without whose invaluable suggestions and advice this study could not have been completed.
