Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Cities of the United States: A Geographical and Industrial Reader The purpose of these studies in geography of cities is to offer to boys and girls in the grammar grades a fresh point of view for the final study of the United States. Each of these Representative Cities is a center of the industries and life of a section, and the cities have been selected with a view of covering in a general way the chief sections of the United States. Many important cities have been omitted, either because their location and development offer no points that have not already been covered, or because the selected cities allow a more picturesque and vivid treatment. The author believes that the best results will follow from studying the cities in the order given, though the arrangement is such that the book can be used effectively with any prescribed course of study. The exercises are based upon many years' experience in the schoolroom. They call for a faithful study of maps, they constantly relate the distant to the home environment, and they keep before the youthful learner by continued comparisons the relation of each center to the world at large. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated history of the American city's evolution from sparsely populated village to regional metropolis. American Urban Form—the spaces, places, and boundaries that define city life—has been evolving since the first settlements of colonial days. The changing patterns of houses, buildings, streets, parks, pipes and wires, wharves, railroads, highways, and airports reflect changing patterns of the social, political, and economic processes that shape the city. In this book, Sam Bass Warner and Andrew Whittemore map more than three hundred years of the American city through the evolution of urban form. They do this by offering an illustrated history of “the City”—a hypothetical city (constructed from the histories of Boston, Philadelphia, and New York) that exemplifies the American city's transformation from village to regional metropolis. In an engaging text accompanied by Whittemore's detailed, meticulous drawings, they chart the City's changes. Planning for the future of cities, they remind us, requires an understanding of the forces that shaped the city's past.

Book Cities in the Urban Age

Download or read book Cities in the Urban Age written by Robert A. Beauregard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a self-proclaimed Urban Age, where we celebrate the city as the source of economic prosperity, a nurturer of social and cultural diversity, and a place primed for democracy. We proclaim the city as the fertile ground from which progress will arise. Without cities, we tell ourselves, human civilization would falter and decay. In Cities in the Urban Age, Robert A. Beauregard argues that this line of thinking is not only hyperbolic—it is too celebratory by half. For Beauregard, the city is a cauldron for four haunting contradictions. First, cities are equally defined by both their wealth and their poverty. Second, cities are simultaneously environmentally destructive and yet promise sustainability. Third, cities encourage rule by political machines and oligarchies, even as they are essentially democratic and at least nominally open to all. And fourth, city life promotes tolerance among disparate groups, even as the friction among them often erupts into violence. Beauregard offers no simple solutions or proposed remedies for these contradictions; indeed, he doesn’t necessarily hold that they need to be resolved, since they are generative of city life. Without these four tensions, cities wouldn’t be cities. Rather, Beauregard argues that only by recognizing these ambiguities and contradictions can we even begin to understand our moral obligations, as well as the clearest paths toward equality, justice, and peace in urban settings.
