Book Representative American Plays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Representative American Plays Classic Reprint written by Arthur Hobson Quinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative American Plays Before each play, a brief introduction explains its significance and gives a biographical sketch of the author, together with necessary information concem ing his plays. No pains have been spared to make these introductions accurate, and the editor has fortunately had at his disposal not only the usual histories of the theatre, but also manuscript sources such as the Bird and Boker Papers and the Diary of William Wood, the Manager of the Chestnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, as well as the printed sources that are included in the Clothier Collection of American Plays in the Library of the University of Pennsylvania. In the cases of the modern plays the information has been checked in nearly every case by the playwrights themselves. In each of the introductions a se lected bibliography has been given. It has seemed unnecessary to cumber these with long lists of magazine articles of a fugitive character but it is hoped that the references given will found helpful. A general bibliography of books relating to the American Drama has been placed at the end of the volume. In each introduction is given also the source of the text. Where it was possible to obtain acting versions of the older texts, the differences between these and the reading versions have been indicated. In general where emenda tions have been made, they have been included in square brackets. The spell ing has followed that of the original text, and the stage directions have been reprinted in the older plays as originally given. Several of the modern plays have been revised by the authors and their wishes have naturally been followed both as to text and stage directions. Some slight alterations have been made even here for the sake of uniformity, and where the preparation of the text has fallen on the editor alone, he has tried to present the stage directions in a read able form, according to modern standards of technique. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Plays by American Dramatists When I came to a consideration of the modern section, there were many omissions which had to be made, due very largely to the fact that authors and owners of copyright were loath to forego their rights. A collection of this kind should undoubtedly have the name of James A. Herne represented in its contents, inasmuch as none of Mr. Herne's plays have heretofore been published, and two of his most distinctive dramas in original manuscript, Mar garet Fleming and Griffith Davenport, have been totally de stroyed by fire. But representatives of Mr. Herne's family have declined, at the present time, to allow his plays to be published. This is to be regretted, inasmuch as nearly all of the most prom inent American playwrights are represented, either in the publi cation of isolated plays or in definitive editions. I should have liked to end this collection with the inclusion of Mr. Eugene Walter's The Easiest Way; at the present time, that play, which was' once issued in an edition privately printed, is to be found in the Drama League Series of plays. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative One-Act Plays by American Authors: Selected, With Biographical Notes This collection contains twenty-four of the most significant one-act plays of the Little Theatre movement in America. Some of them have not been previously printed; others have been out of print for some time or are inaccessible. I have made the collection in the hope that by bringing them to gether in one volume they will not be immediately lost. Although the war has for a moment scattered many of the Little Theatres and stunted the growth of the new play form, it is because the art is now at a pause that it may be more easily surveyed. Book Representative Plays by American Dramatists

Download or read book Representative Plays by American Dramatists written by Langdon Elwyn Mitchell and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representative Plays by American Dramatists: 1856-1911: The New York Idea by Langdon Elwyn Mitchell The performance of "The New York Idea" at the Lyric Theatre, New York, on November 19, 1906, was one of the rare, distinguished events in the American Theatre. It revealed the fact that at last an American playwright had written a drama comparable with the very best European models, scintillating with clear, cold brilliancy, whose dialogue carried with it an exceptional literary style. It was a play that showed a vitality which will serve to keep it alive for many generations, which will make it welcome, however often it is revived; for there is a universal import to its satire which raises it above the local, social condition it purports to portray. And though there is nothing of an ideal character about its situations, though it seems to be all head, with a minimum of apparent heart, it none the less is universal in the sense that Restoration comedy is universal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative One-Act Plays: By British and Irish Authors One-act Plays by American Authors, edited by Margaret Gardner Mayorga and published in 1919. The book was originally undertaken by Mr. Clayton Hamilton who, finding himself unable to continue the work, turned it over to the present editor. It is the duty of the present editor to record as editors have before him recorded - that Barrie and Shaw must be excluded from collections of this sort, for reasons which others have euphemistically described as limitations of copyright. One-act plays of Barrie and Shaw would have been made an integral part of this collection had the authors and their publishers seen fit to cooperate on a basis similar to that accepted by other authors and publishers; they did not, and the reader is therefore asked to fill in the breach as best he can. Is he still so angry with me, then? Green. Angry with you? That's putting it mild. I call him the pig-headedest old hard-heart I ever knew. He won't let them breathe your name. Hazel. How did you learn this? Green. Dolly told me. Hazel. (Puzzled.) Dolly, is that what you call her? Green. Oh, yes, if a person's name is Dolly, no harm to call her so, is there? Oh! I forgot, you don't know, do you? Hazel. Know what? Green. Why, about Dolly. She's done for! Hazel. Done for? Green. Yes, going to make a fool of herself. Hazel. How? Green. Now sit right down here by me, and tell me all about it. Green. (Sitting.) Oh! it was just like Dolly herself, short and sweet. After you left Lancashire, tlie doors of the old mill were sternly closed, especially against me. But it did n't matter, you see. Book Representative English Dramas From Dryden to Sheridan Classic Reprint

Download or read book Representative English Dramas From Dryden to Sheridan Classic Reprint written by Frederick Tupper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative English Dramas From Dryden to Sheridan This book is designed for students rather than for scholars or specialists. It makes little or no contribution to the present knowledge of authors and their plays. It grapples with no difficult problems of origins and solves no riddles of dramatic evolution. It enters into no competition with histories of the English drama. Its mission is the humble one of presenting in a single volume representative plays of the century and more between the Restoration of the Stuarts and the American Revolution. The introductions to the dozen dramas and the notes and bibliographies at the end of the book contain only such information as the editors deem necessary for an understanding of the circumstances of this literary output, only such interpretative comment as they consider stimulating to the reader's own critical sense. With regard to the necessity and stimulus of this editorial matter, others may well be of a different mind. Book Representative Plays by American Dramatists

Download or read book Representative Plays by American Dramatists written by Clyde Fitch and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representative Plays by American Dramatists: 1856-1911: The Moth and the Flame by Clyde Fitch Clyde Fitch brought a vivacity to the American stage that no other American playwright has thus far succeeded in emulating. The total impression of his work leads one to believe that he also brought to the American stage a style which was at the same time literary and distinctly his own. His personality was interesting and lovable, quickly responsive to a variety of human nature. No play of his was ever wholly worthless, because of that personal equation which lent youth and spontaneity to much of his dialogue. When he attained popular fame, he threw off his dramas-whether original or adapted from the French and German-with a rapidity and ease that did much to create a false impression as to his haste and casualness. But Fitch, though a nervously quick worker, was never careless. He pondered his dramas long, he carried his characters in mind for years, he almost memorized his dialogue before he set it down on paper. And if he wrote in his little note-books with the same staccato speed that an artist sketches, it was merely because he saw the picture vividly, and because the preliminaries had been done beforehand.
