Book Women and Equality in Iran

Download or read book Women and Equality in Iran written by Leila Alikarami and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iran's continued retention of discriminatory laws stands in stark contrast to the advances Iranian women have made in other spheres since the Revolution in 1979. Leila Alikarami here aims to determine the extent to which the actions of women's rights activists have led to a significant change in their legal status. She argues that while Iranian women have not yet obtained legal equality, the gender bias of the Iranian legal system has been successfully challenged and has lost its legitimacy. More pertinently, the social context has become more prepared to accommodate legal rights for women. Highlighting the key challenges that proponents of gender equality face in the Muslim context, Alikarami attempts to ascertain the causes of Iran's failure to ratify the CEDAW and questions whether and to what extent interpretations of Islamic principles prevent Iran from doing so. Applying feminist legal theory to contemporary Iran, Alikarami's approach re-evaluates the underlying principles that have shaped the struggle for equal rights between the sexes.

Book Honour Based Crimes and the Law

Download or read book Honour Based Crimes and the Law written by Mukaddes Gorar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honour based violence and abuse manifests itself in different forms, and this book offers a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. This book argues that the limits of honour crimes must be defined more widely so that they include conducts and behaviours that originate from the patriarchal notion of honour, such as honour based oppression and breast ironing. The book provides a critical analysis and synthesis of the law in England and Wales and in the international human rights sphere. The relevant domestic legislation and cases are examined to reflect on whether adequate protection is provided for the victims and potential victims of honour based violence and abuse. Since honour based violence is a violation of human rights, the relevant international human rights law is examined to illustrate the perception of such crimes in the international arena. The effectiveness of any remedy for victims of honour based violence and abuse depends on its capability to change deep rooted behaviours in communities with honour based patriarchal values. This book argues that the law does not provide the effective impact required, in part due to patriarchal structures, and that more efforts should be dedicated to changes in education. It is held that there is a need for an educational programme that is especially designed to tackle violence and promote gender equality. The book will be essential reading for academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Human Rights Law, Criminal Law and Gender Studies.

Book Yearbook of the United Nations Volume 50 1996

Download or read book Yearbook of the United Nations Volume 50 1996 written by United Nations and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 1572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1996 edition of the Yearbook of the United Nations is the single most comprehensive and authoritative reference book about the work of the United Nations and related international organizations and bodies. Fully indexed and reproducing all major General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council resolutions, the volume is not only useful for diplomats, government officials and scholars, but also for researchers, writers, journalists, teachers, students and others with a serious interest in international and UN affairs. This volume of the Yearbook details the many activities of the Organization and its organs, programmes and bodies, as they are carried out in all corners of the globe. It gives an account of their endeavours to create better and more peaceful conditions for all mankind and records their efforts to deal with matters of pressing concern in a variety of areas, including peacekeeping and peacemaking, disarmament, human rights, trade and development, control of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, crime prevention, assistance to refugees and other vulnerable populations. Building on the experience of its first 50 years, the United Nations continued in 1996 to confront major global challenges. The observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty can be seen as a benchmark for action to address a plethora of global ills that beset the majority of Earth's nearly 6 billion inhabitants - hunger, inadequate housing, disease, the deterioration of the environment, unemployment. During the year, the United Nations convened two major conferences - the `City Summit' in Istanbul, centering on the two themes of adequate shelter for all, and sustainable human settlement development in an urbanizing world, and the World Food Summit in Rome, whose main goal was food security for all. The Yearbook chronicles these events and many other milestones reached, making it an invaluable tool for anyone seeking in-depth information about the United Nations family. Also available from the UN, Sales No. E.97.I.1 As of volume 51 (1997) the Yearbook of the United Nations will no longer be published by Kluwer Law International. Book The Charter of the United Nations

Download or read book The Charter of the United Nations written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-22 with total page 6378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the third edition of this commentary on the Charter of the United Nations was published in 2012, the text of the Charter has not changed DL but the world has. Central pillars of the international order enshrined in the UN Charter are facing serious challenges, notably the prohibition of the use of force. Human rights, too, have come under increasing pressure, now also from contemporary information technology. Global warming poses fundamental challenges for the world community as a whole in its effort to stabilize global ecosystems. Fully updated, the commentary takes up these and other developments. It features new chapters on Climate Change and the Human Rights Council. The commentary remains the authoritative, article-by-article account of the legislative history, interpretation, and practical application of each and every Charter provision. Written by a team of distinguished scholars and practitioners, this book combines academic research with the insights of practice. It is an indispensable tool of reference for all those interested in the United Nations and its legal significance for the world community. The Commentary will be crucial in combining solid legal foundations with new directions for the development of international law and the United Nations in the twenty-first century
