Book Interfaces Baptists and Others

Download or read book Interfaces Baptists and Others written by David Bebbington and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a collection of twenty-one essays discussing how Baptists throughout the world have related to other Christians and to other institutions and movements over the centuries. The theme of this collection of twenty-one essays, 'Baptists and Others', includes relations with other Christians and with other institutions and movements. What, the authors ask, has been the Baptist experience of engaging with different groups and developments? The theme has been explored by means of case studies, some of which are very specific in time and place while others cover long periods and more than one country. In the first half the contents are arranged by period. The first section examines early Baptists, the second nineteenth-century Baptists in Britain and America and the third Baptists in the twentieth century. The second half turns to various parts of the world. There is a section on Australia, another on New Zealand and a third on Asia and Africa. The overall picture is one of a complicated series of relationships as Baptists defined themselves as different from other bodies and yet, especially in the twentieth century, tried to co-operate in mission and ecumenical endeavour. 'Baptists are often regarded as enthusiastic separatists and unenthusiastic ecumenists. These essays, based on hard evidence rather than passing impressions, are a necessary correction to superficial prejudices and show the reality to be much more complex and nuanced, as well as varied over time and place. The book is a smorgasbord of delights. Yet, readers should avoid the temptation to pick and choose from the menu, ensuring rather that each offering is digested so they enjoy a balance and nutritious meal.' Derek Tidball

Book Traditional Christian Ethics

Download or read book Traditional Christian Ethics written by David W. T. Brattston and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One of Traditional Christian Ethics describes the terminology, discusses popular approaches to ethical decision-making today, illustrates that the earliest Christians conducted themselves in accordance with a large number of specific moral rules, states the method of this set of books for reconstructing the content of early Christian ethics/law as attested before the devastating epidemic and mass apostasy of AD 249251, gives reasons for regarding this as the terminal date, and provides a guide to using the lists. At a number of points, this volume deals with objections to its theses. Volume One also furnishes you with complete information as to where you can find and look up the ancient sources cited in translation. Traditional Christian Ethics will help you solve problems in moral decision-making when Scripture is unclear or silent. You can solve them through its comprehensive itemized concordances of citations to precepts of Christian ethics from all translated ancient texts. Its sources possess unassailable authority that cannot be fabricated, and are persuasive among most Christian denominations. Preachers and professional scholars will find them invaluable as a starting point in preparing their own sermons, books, articles, and essays on specific points of ethics.

Book Christianity in the Twenty first Century

Download or read book Christianity in the Twenty first Century written by Robert Wuthnow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 2000--and beyond--what will the church be like? What challenges will it face? Will the church be able to provide a strong sense of community? Will it be an ethical force in the lives of Americans? And what role will religion play in politics and in the marketplace? In Christianity in the 21st Century Robert Wuthnow reflects on these provocative questions as he seeks to identify changes that are taking place now in American society that churches must address if they are to remain vital in the future. He foresees five critical areas--institutional, ethical, doctrinal, political, and cultural--in which major challenges will arise, then meets the thorny issues head-on. How will churches' resource bases, their very identity, and their capacity to carry on their spiritual traditions be altered? till they continue to function as sources of caring in a needy world? What impact will the resurgence of fundamentalism have, and how will moderate and liberal congregations react? How will the political activities of churches influence their capacity to be heard in the public arena, and what will the impact be of pluralism and the prevailing materialism of our society? Drawing on a wide range of first-hand observations and research, Wuthnow demontrates that in each of these five areas people of faith have strong reasons to enter the next century with confidence in their religious institutions. But he also highlights worrisome signs, and points to specific areas that need to be addressed to ensure the continuing vitality for Christianity in America--not least among these are the rampant individualism that erodes spiritual communities and the religious infighting that diminishes the Christian sense of unity. The onset of a new millennium affords a historic opportunity to take stock of the present situation and to plan for the future--in the years ahead, much reflection is likely to occur about all our major institutions. Christianity in the 21st Century aims to contribute to those reflections by offering a sobering, realistic, and ultimately hopeful assessment of where the church is now, and where the church is headed.
