This book was released on 2024-04-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, the Hai||om people were evicted from Etosha by the South African-controlled South West African Administration. In 2015, the Hai||om filed the case of Tsumib v Government of the Republic of Namibia in the High Court of Namibia. “Beggars on our own land …” unravels the historical and contemporary socio-legal complexities that led to the Tsumib case. At the core of the case lies the legal question, how can the Hai||om people approach the Namibian Courts in order to claim compensation for the loss of their ancestral lands?Odendaal goes into detail how the Tsumib case materialised under the post-independence Namibian constitutional discourse. He assesses the Namibian land reform programme and its oversight in dealing with historical land dispossessions. He inspects Hai||om “identity” and how it was used to strengthen their case. He concludes with an examination of Namibia’s outdated and restrictive legal framework, which ultimately denied the Hai||om people their constitutional right to be heard in the Namibian Court. While the future of ancestral land claims in Namibia depends on the political will of the Namibian government, Odendaal argues that the Namibian courts have a duty to comply with the rights giving nature of the Namibian Constitution that lays the foundation for the Hai||om people’s ancestral claims.

Download or read book The 1967 Referendum written by Bain Attwood and published by Aboriginal Studies Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 27 May 1967 a remarkable event occurred. An overwhelming majority of electors voted in a national referendum to amend clauses of the Australian Constitution concerning Aboriginal people. Today it is commonly regarded as a turning point in the history of relations between Indigenous and white Australians: a historic moment when citizenship rights -- including the vote -- were granted and the Commonwealth at long last assumed responsibility for Aboriginal affairs. Yet the constitutional changes entailed in the referendum brought about none of these things. "The 1967 Referendum" explores the legal and political significance of the referendum and the long struggle by black and white Australians for constitutional change. It traces the emergence of a series of powerful narratives about the Australian Constitution and the status of Aborigines, revealing how and why the referendum campaign acquired so much significance and has since become the subject of highly charged myth in contemporary Australia. Attwood and Markus's text is complemented by personal recollections and opinions about the referendum by a range of Indigenous people, and historical documents and illustrations.
Download or read book Uganda A Modern History written by Jan Jelmert Jørgensen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda: A Modern History (1981) provides a comprehensive political, social and economic history of Uganda from the beginnings of colonial rule in 1888. It focuses particularly on the development of the Ugandan economy and demonstrates how the economy became structurally dependent on world capitalism during the colonial period and how this has affected its subsequent development. The book also deals with the political and social tendencies which shaped Ugandan society in both the colonial and postcolonial period. The first four chapters examine the initial colonial occupation and the colonial state’s role in the rural nexus of chiefs, peasants and migrant workers. They also look at the colonial state and the context of the wider national, regional and international economy and analyse the African nationalist response and the formation of political parties to take control of the postcolonial state. The second part of the book considers the political alliances and economic strategies of the Obote regime and the events of Amin’s military regime. The epilogue looks at events since the fall of the Amin regime and suggests ways in which Uganda may be able to tackle its underlying economic problems.
