Book Results of the 1992 Primary Assessment Program in Urban Schools

Download or read book Results of the 1992 Primary Assessment Program in Urban Schools written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the aggregated reading and mathematics performances of students in years 5 and 7 in urban Northern Territory (Australia) schools on the Primary Assessment Program (PAP) tests. The aggregated results are encouraging, with apparent gains in some reading tests over the preceding year, and no evidence of decline in the others. Reading-test results indicate that the majority of students in years 5 and 7 are well able to read and comprehend texts considered suitable to their levels. There is evidence that boys marginally outperformed girls in the measurement strand of mathematics. On all reading tests, girls outperformed boys. Results of the mathematics tests indicate that students find these somewhat more difficult than the reading tests, with the average mark for both years at approximately 55 percent. Test results of urban self-identified Aboriginal students indicate that, on average, their achievement levels are well below those of non-Aboriginal students. Fourteen tables, 11 figures, and 42 graphs illustrate student achievement results. Six appendixes contain information about the test construction and validation process and comparative performances of various groups. A glossary is attached. (SLD)

Book The Northern Territory Primary Assessment Program

Download or read book The Northern Territory Primary Assessment Program written by Anne Richards and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document reports the Northern Territory Primary Assessment Program (Australia), which monitors student achievement in reading and mathematics in grades 5 and 7 in urban primary schools and grade 5 to post-primary in Aboriginal schools. The aim of the program is to provide teachers with a set of assessment materials and provide information regarding the academic achievement of students at the end of primary schooling. This study focused on the operation of the program in schools and the perceptions of teachers and other personnel involved with the program. Data were collected by a questionnaire-survey of 185 teachers and school visits to 19 urban schools and 10 rural Aboriginal schools. Results of the study indicate the following: (1) many teachers have little understanding or knowledge of the program; (2) some schools have incomplete sets of materials; (3) teachers expressed doubts about the relevance of certain program materials for classroom use; and (4) only about half of all Aboriginal schools participate in the program. In schools where the program has been properly implemented it makes a valuable contribution; therefore, active participation must be ensured for all schools to take advantage of the program's potential. Appendices include procedures for improving test item quality, interview schedules, sample questionnaires for urban and Aboriginal schools, and a sample program evaluation form. (LP)

Book Results of the Primary Assessment

Download or read book Results of the Primary Assessment written by Zheng Sen Huang and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results and sample items of a reading test and a mathematics test administered to Year 5 and Year 7 primary level students in 1989 in the Northern Territory of Australia. The Primary Assessment Program (PAP) monitors achievement in English and Mathematics in urban schools. All students in Years 5 and 7 are tested in reading and mathematics each year. Writing is assessed by analyses of teacher-assessed sample scripts sent in from schools. Diagnostic information and trend analysis data are extracted for use by both the school and system. A forward notes that data from 1988 and 1989 provide convincing evidence that standards are being maintained and that there was a significant improvement in the achievement of Year 7 students in mathematics. Chapter 1 describes the PAP covering the nature of the materials and reporting of results. Chapter 2 offers results of the Year 5 mathematics test. Chapter 3 details results of the Year 7 mathematics test. Chapter 4 covers results of the Year 5 reading test. Chapter 5 contains results of the Year 7 reading test. Chapter 6 summarizes the findings and provides analyses. Appendixes 1 and 2 list members of the Primary Assessment Committee and the 1989 Mathematics Test Panels. Appendix 3 contains four selections from the reading tests. (JB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major changes in the emphases of education programs in Australian schools have occurred since 1986. The states and territories collaborated to define the general content for a national curriculum in eight 'key learning areas'. At the same time, they developed a common framework for describing what students have learned in relation to that curriculum. This report presents a comprehensive picture of the key people, decisions, events, problems and successes as the states and territories embarked on making the new 'outcomes- based' approach a reality for teachers and students. The book contains: a detailed chapter from each state and territory education system; results from a 1996 national survey of principals and teachers; commentary and insights collected from teachers during school visits; and, evidence and examples of 'best practice' implementation strategies.

Book Primary Assessment Program Writing Moderation Booklets

Download or read book Primary Assessment Program Writing Moderation Booklets written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To determine the appropriateness of existing writing assessment instruments, to set directions for future assessment, and to ensure that assessment instruments are consistent with the requirements of the new English curriculum of the Northern Territory (Australia), teachers were sampled to determine how they used the booklets of moderated writing samples in 1991 and to gain other information about their regard for the moderated writing samples. A survey questionnaire was sent to teachers in years 5 and 7 in 71 schools and to various administration officials. A total of 86 teachers responded. Teachers believed, as they had in a 1989 survey, that the booklets containing the moderated samples and the framework of descriptors provided for assessment are useful resources for assessment of student writing. Nevertheless, many teachers did not know of or did not have access to the booklets. Year-7 teachers made more use of the booklets than did Year-5 teachers. Informal discussions made it clear that teachers are interested in having access to collections of moderated samples of early childhood student writing. With full implementation of the new curriculum and annual system-wide moderation of student writing at years 5 and 7, use of the moderated samples will probably increase. The booklet survey is included. (SLD)
