Book Water Resources Planning for the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway

Download or read book Water Resources Planning for the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-12-18 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently completed its feasibility study for the Upper Mississippi River-Ilinois Waterway, which was one of the agency's longest and most complicated studies in its history. The first two reports from this WSTB committee reviewed analytical aspects of the Corps feasibility study. Water Resources Planning for the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway considers the broader issue of managing the multiple resources of the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway, especially with regard to several, recently-issued NRC reports on Corps of Engineers planning procedures. The report finds that a key issue regarding planning decisions on these river systems is the ambiguity related to several different pieces of legislation and acts that govern river management, and thus recommends that the administration and Congress clarify the federal intent for managing this river and waterway system. The report recommends an independent, retrospective reivew of the experience with a federal inter-agency Principals Group, which was convened to provide guidance to the Corps study. It is also recommended that the Corps strive to incorporate flexible, adaptive management principles through its entire water planning program, including operations of the lock and dam system.

Book Locks and Dam 1 Ford Dam Mississippi River Draft Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment for Hydropower

Download or read book Locks and Dam 1 Ford Dam Mississippi River Draft Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment for Hydropower written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS ST PAUL MN ST PAUL DISTRICT. and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a detailed evaluation of additional hydropower potential at Locks and Dam 1. An earlier evaluation in a reconnaissance level report (September 1981) indicated preliminary feasibility for added hydropower at this Federal navigation project site. The original Federal navigation locks and dam project included a foundation for a hydropower plant to be developed by non-Federal interests. The existing hydropower plant and equipment are owned and operated by the Ford Motor Company. The existing four turbines generate a combined nameplate capacity of 14.4 MW (megawatts).

Book Feasibility Report for Hydropower St Anthony Falls Locks and Dams Mississippi River Minneapolis Minnesota

Download or read book Feasibility Report for Hydropower St Anthony Falls Locks and Dams Mississippi River Minneapolis Minnesota written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS ST PAUL MN ST PAUL DISTRICT. and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a more detailed evaluation of the additional hydropower potential at both Upper and Lower St. Anthony Falls. An earlier evaluation in a reconnaissance level report dated September 1981 showed preliminary feasibility for added hydropower development at both locations. There are existing hydropower development at both locations. There are existing hydropower plants at each location that are owned and operated by Northern States Power Company. The existing units generate at nameplate capacities of 12.4 MW (megawatts) at Hennepin Island (Upper St. Anthony Falls) and 8.0 MW at Lower Dam (Lower St. Anthony Falls). This study was conducted assuming Federal development of additional hydropower at St. Anthony Falls. Project cost data, economic parameters, and other information would be different when assuming development by the present hydropower license, Northern States Power Company. This study concludes that added hydroelectric capacities of 21.0 MW at Upper St. Anthony Falls and 5.4 MW at Lower St. Anthony Falls are the optimum amounts that could be added at these two sites. The upper and lower sites would produce additional average annual energy of 65,120 and 18,900 MWh (megawatt-hours), respectively. The added energy developed from these two sites would be equivalent to 143,000 barrels of oil or 39,000 tons of coal per year.
