Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Series in Line Spectra My purpose in the present report has been to give a comprehensive account of the development and present state of our knowledge of the regularities in spectra, as deduced from the spectra themselves, with but little regard to theories of their origin. The report is in two parts, the first of which gives a general account of spectral series, excluding those which occur in band spectra, while the second is intended to include the most authentic experimental data available in April, 1921. It is hoped that the tables of series lines, together with the references to lines which have not yet been classified, will suggest and facilitate further investigations. The system of numeration of the series lines which has been adopted is that of Rydberg and Hicks, but if it should be found convenient to modify this numeration on theoretical grounds there should be no difficulty in making the desired alterations. The spectra dealt with are those obtained by optical methods, extending from the infra-red to the extreme ultra-violet. The emissions of higher frequencies which have been revealed in the study of X-ray spectra do not form extended series of the kind met with in optical spectra, and have accordingly not been considered. As pointed out by the writer in an earlier paper, a simple explanation of the pronounced analogy between these spectra and the hy drogen spectrum is offered by the fact, that the atomic systems, involved in the emission of the spectra under consideration, in a certain sense may be regarded as a perturbed hydrogen atom. On the other hand, a clue to the interpretation of the characteristic difference between the hydrogen spectrum and the spectra of other elements was first obtained by sommerfeld's theory of the stationary states of cen tral systems referred to above. As shown by sommerfeld, it is possible on this theory to account in general outlines for the well known laws governing the fre quencies of the series spectra of the elements; and, as it will be shown in Part III, it is also possible, on the basis of the formal relation between the quantum theory and the ordinary theory of radiation, in this way to obtain a simple interpretation of the laws governing the remarkable differences in the intensities with which the various series of lines appear, which on the combination principle would constitute the complete spectra under consideration. As regards the detailed discussion of these spectra, however, it is necessary to bear in mind that the part played by the inner electrons in the atoms of the elements in question forms a far more intricate pro blem than the perturbing effect of a fixed external field on the hydrogen atom. For the treatment of this problem the theory of conditionally periodic systems based on the conditions (22) does not seem to suffice, while, as it will be shown in Part III, it appears that the method of perturbations exposed in the following lends itself naturally also to this case. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Draper Memorial: First Annual Report of the Photographic Study of Stellar Spectra Conducted at the Harvard College Other methods of enlargement have been considered, and some of them tried, with the object of removing the irregularities of the original spectra without intro ducing new defects. For instance, the sensitive plate may be moved during the enlargement in the direction of the spectral lines; a slit parallel to the lines may be used as the source of light, and the original negative separated by a small inter val from the plate used for the copy; or two cylindrical lenses may be used, with their axes perpendicular to each other. In some of these ways the lines due to dust might either be avoided or so much reduced in length as not to resemble the true lines of the spectrum. The 15-inch refractor is now being used with a modification of the apparatus employed by Dr. Draper in his first experiments, - a slit spectroscope from which the slit has been removed. A concave lens has been substituted for the collimator and slit, and, besides other advantages, a great saving in length is secured by this change. It is proposed to apply this method to the 28-inch re ector, thus utilizing its great power of gathering light.
