Book excerpt: Defense Subsistence Region Pacific (DRSPAC) is responsible for the acquisition of food products (meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, etc.) for military personnel located west of the Rocky Mountains. In the author's review of current DSRPAC operations, it was observed that capitalizing on price movements was not a consideration during acquisition of beef products. Using time-series analysis, it was shown that significant seasonal price movements occur for selected stock items. Supplemental information and the initial stages of a forecasting model were developed to support replenishment decision making, It is recommended that price movements be incorporated within the acquisition strategy of DSRPAC. The criterion of supply effectiveness should always be foremost, DSRPAC's consistent with purpose, but need not be degraded by the introduction of cost efficiencies associated with an acquisition strategy that considers price movements.
