Book Changing Landscape of Academic Women s Health Care in the United States

Download or read book Changing Landscape of Academic Women s Health Care in the United States written by William F. Rayburn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2005 a dozen states and more than 15 specialties have reported a physician shortage or anticipate one in the next few years. This anticipated shortage and a worsening of physician distribution are compounded by a projected increased demand for women’s healthcare services. Women’s healthcare is particularly vulnerable, because the obstetrician-gynecologist workforce is aging and is among the least satisfied medical specialists. Furthermore, fellowship training in women’s healthcare in internal medicine and in maternal child health in family and community medicine involves only a small portion of general internists and family physicians. In response to this challenge, the Association of American Medical Colleges called for an expansion of medical schools and graduate medical education enrollments. As we cope with significant and rapid changes in organizations and reimbursement, academic departments of obstetrics and gynecology, family and community medicine, and internal medicine have opportunities to create a unified women’s health curriculum for undergraduate students, share preventive health and well-woman expertise in training programs, provide improved continuity of care, instill concepts of lifelong learning to our graduates, and better develop our research programs. This volume’s chapters focus on strategic planning on behalf of academic faculty who will train the anticipated additional load of students, residents, and fellows in women’s healthcare. -changing demographics of faculty -expanding roles of clinician educators -physician investigators and their future -the hidden value of part-time faculty -faculty salaries -required skillsets of academic leaders -the meaning of tenure and faculty satisfaction and retention. Recommendations presented here from authors with distinguished leadership skills indicate a consensus, but not unanimity. In furthering these goals, we summarize in the final chapter our collective expertise and offer ways to implement recommendations to better prepare for tomorrow’s needs in academic women’s healthcare.

  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

Download or read book Democracy s Children written by John McGowan and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do American intellectuals try to achieve their political and social goals? By what means do they articulate their hopes for change? John McGowan seeks to identify the goals and strategies of contemporary humanistic intellectuals who strive to shape the politics and culture of their time. In a lively mix of personal reflection and shrewd analysis, McGowan visits the sites of intellectual activity (scholarly publications, professional conferences, the classroom, and the university) and considers the hazards of working within such institutional contexts to effect change outside the academy. Democracy's Children considers the historical trajectory that produced current intellectual practices. McGowan links the growing prestige of "culture" since 1800 to the growth of democracy and the obsession with modernity and explores how intellectuals became both custodians and creators of culture. Caught between fears of culture's irrelevance and dreams of its omnipotence, intellectuals pursue a cultural politics that aims for wide-ranging social transformations. For better or worse, McGowan says, the humanities are now tied to culture and to the university. The opportunities and frustrations attendant on this partnership resonate with the larger successes and failures of contemporary democratic societies. His purpose in this collection of essays is to illuminate the conditions under which intellectuals in a democracy work and at the same time to promote intellectual activities that further democratic ideals.

Book Academic Promotion for Clinicians

Download or read book Academic Promotion for Clinicians written by Anne Walling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical guide to the appointment, promotion, and tenure (APT) process for clinical faculty members employed by medical schools. The number of clinical faculty members in US medical schools has increased exponentially in the last two decades. At the same time, faculty career tracks and promotion requirements have changed dramatically and medical schools have introduced multiple non-tenure career tracks. Currently, only about 25% of the approximately 150,000 members of clinical departments. This book provides insights and recommendations on career planning and academic promotion for clinical faculty members. It also addresses much of the “mythology” surrounding the APT process and demonstrates how academic promotion should be used as a career-building process rather than a daunting high-risk event. Topics include concepts and processes within academic promotion; navigating the academic promotion and tenure process; and managing the outcome of the APT application. Academic Promotion for Clinicians is a valuable resource for clinical medicine faculty members as they engage in and successfully handle the challenges in the APT process and thus realize their career goals.
