Book Manuscripts in the National Library of Wales Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru Aberystwyth

Download or read book Manuscripts in the National Library of Wales Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru Aberystwyth written by National Library of Wales and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1999 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The National Library of Wales was founded to preserve the material of the literary culture and history of Wales, hence the number of medieval English language manuscripts is relatively small, and the manuscript context for some English texts is one in which Welsh is the main language. The best known of the Middle English manuscripts in the NLW are Brogyntyn II.1 (Porkington 10) and the Hengwrt manuscript for Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'; however, the collection has been little explored for its Middle English holdings, and of the manuscripts listed here fewer than half are included in the 'Index of Printed Middle English Prose'. They contain a wealth of materials, most notably in historical writings, scientific texts, and prophecies; among the texts not previously recorded are the 'Davies Chronicle' and a version of the 'Elucidarius'.'

Book J E Lloyd and the Creation of Welsh History

Download or read book J E Lloyd and the Creation of Welsh History written by Huw Pryce and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first intellectual biography of John Edward Lloyd (1861–1947), widely regarded as the founder of the modern academic study of Welsh history. Indeed, the compliment that pleased him most was that he had ‘created Welsh history’. Published to mark the centenary of Lloyd’s most important book, A History of Wales from the Earliest Times to the Edwardian Conquest (1911), the study reassesses Lloyd’s significance by setting his work in its multiple contexts. Part One gives an account of his life, with particular emphasis on his upbringing, education and subsequent career as a historian, viewed against the background both of efforts to give expression to Welsh nationhood through educational institutions and of wider developments in the professionalization of historical scholarship. In Part Two the focus shifts from the biographical to the thematic and examines why Lloyd privileged the early and medieval Welsh past and how he depicted this in his 1911 History. These chapters investigate key themes in Lloyd’s interpretation with reference not only to previous accounts of Welsh history but also to the broader intellectual and scholarly context of his own time. Through its reappraisal of Lloyd the book provides a case study of how the past of a small, stateless nation was reconfigured, at a time of self-conscious national revival, through deploying modern canons of scholarship that served to legitimize a new narrative of national origins. It thus offers a fresh and distinctive perspective on issues of broad significance in modern European historiography and intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physick and the family offers new insights into the early modern sickness experience, through a study of the medical history of Wales. Newly available in paperback, this first ever monograph of early modern Welsh medicine utilises a large body of newly discovered source material. Using numerous approaches and methodologies, it makes a significant contribution to debates in medical history, including economies of knowledge, domestic medicine and care, material culture and the rural medical marketplace. Drawing on sources from probates to parish records, diaries to domestic remedy collections, Withey offers new directions for recovering the often obscure medical worldview of the ‘ordinary’ person. This innovative study will appeal to anyone interested in the social history of the early modern period. Its multi-disciplinary approach will appeal to a broad spectrum of academics and scholars, and will enhance a range of courses and modules both in medical history and in social history more widely.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Drama

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Drama written by Christina M. Fitzgerald and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past generation has been an extraordinarily active one in medieval drama scholarship; our appreciation of the range of medieval drama has been significantly broadened, and our understanding of certain medieval genres—most notably, biblical drama—has been fundamentally altered. The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has been widely praised for the degree to which it has taken this scholarship into account in its selection of and presentation of medieval plays. Now Broadview launches a new anthology that takes those plays as its base while expanding very substantially beyond them to represent the full range of drama in English (and, where strong connections exist, in French, Latin, Cornish, and Welsh as well) through to 1576. In all, over forty plays are included. Each work has been fully annotated and is prefaced by a substantial introduction. In many cases the language is to some extent modernized in order to make the plays more accessible to readers today.
